Among the organs of the human body the breast has a special place. A marker of sex, of eroticism, of
life, motherhood, even the distinction of the mammalian class of vertebrates, the breast carries as
much meaning for humanity as it does vital function. The breast, in other words, is a sign and site
where Western culture believes life as such to be situated. Sadly, it is also vulnerable to its virulent
and deadly form of what has been recently termed "the emperor of all maladies": cancer. The loss of
the breast can provoke a form of “castration anxiety.” This course will explore the history of the
breast as symbol of sex and life, along with the cancer that affects it not merely as a medical
condition, but as a powerful symbol in culture, art, and literature.

The readings can be retrieved through the online course reserve; password WEG213.
Grades will be based on in-class performance (1-2 kick off presentations on weekly readings per
student/semester) and attendance (50%), a final presentation at the end of November (25%) —
possible also in small groups, and a final paper (25%). As attendance is extremely important for class
discussion, students will only be allowed two unexcused absences. Each additional unexcused
absence after the initial three will result in a two percent reduction of the students’ final grade. Per
university policy, all excused absences must be cleared through Dr. Susan Boswell, Dean of Student
Life (sboswell@jhu.edu). As a matter of courtesy it is requested that if students are or will be absent,
no matter the excuse, that they inform me via email.
By October 25 (latest) students will have decided on their final paper topic and will discuss it with
me. During the last two class meetings students will present their topics in front of the class in
preparation of their 10 page (minimum) research paper that may include visuals, website, etc. in
addition to critical writing. Students will hand in the final paper during Final Examination Period
(December 16). Please, print out the papers and leave them in my mailbox.
