Oscar Ayala; #2 4th 1.) Night is Shorter than Day by Aria I’ve no time for sleep, the executioner will come at dawn And the sound of footsteps behind my door hits like a knife But in my cage enters not the messenger of certain death But Holy Lie in a black frock The holy Father brought the word of God into darkness And promised me miracles of Eternal life “You’re mortal and you must return to God” Whispered the priest and lied me in the eyes “Repent, son Earthly life Is prelude to Another. On the wall Of your prison You will see the Holy image” Chorus: Night is shorter than day The day will be my death World of illusions burns in it Night is shorter than day The day will be my death All that’s alive disappears, such as I The beatitude of Heaven I will leave to the beggars The beggars must have the Tsar and God as spirit I am an earthly creature and in the skies I am not wanted And to hell with eternity, what’s the use of it? Let it be if I have to go through the pains of Hell Let the crowd run to the execution with all one's might The shouts of hate will become my reward In the hour of death I will not be lonely The light of dawn Nestled close to the wall I hear the sound of keys That is all My executioner has come With death on his shoulder (Chorus) Night is shorter than day, shorter than day (Chorus) - I chose this song because it was created for the book and it reflects Meursault’s encounter with the chaplain or after he finishes speaking to him. It narrates in the view point of Meursault and says some of his lines in the book. I would put this song in the Oscar Ayala; #2 4th scene where he comes in contact with the priest and talks about how he does not believe in God. It also talks about when he waits in his prison cell and doesn’t care at all that he is going to die. This song dictates many of the lines that are present in the book thus clearly reflecting the book itself. 2.) No Hope by Tuxedomoon O God what am i to do without you O God hold me tight just hold me It has to do with love Nothing but zeros in the register No mr. no mrs no ms. No messages It has to do with love A world of love Leave your little boy alone And see how your garden grows It has to do with love When nothing's up your nose or in your cheek No bondage no bailbonds No dope It has to do with love when there's no hope It has to do with love when there's no hope Let's put an end to this confusion Set some things straight C'mon baby Twist & shout It has to do with love when there's no hope It has to do with love when there's no hope - This song is relevant to the text due to the fact that it talks about how he must deal with hope after not knowing the difference between execution, or a natural death. He sees it as he had to die someday, one way, or another. Hope tortures Meursault because it creates the false illusion that he can change the fact of his death and it prevents him from seeing the actual situation. But once he sees his death without hope he accepts it as an inevitable event. That is why this song would be probably when he is in his cell contemplating death, or before he speaks to the chaplain. 3.) Stranger by Tuxedomoon I was born today There was strangers there Cut me off And left me in a chloroformed cell I yelled and I yelled But nobody cared Oscar Ayala; #2 4th First day at school I lost my front teeth Boys beat me up Cause I wasn't one of them I fought till I bled And everyone was scared Yeah, everyone was scared It isn't my fault It isn't my fault It isn't my fault That I'm strange I wasn't good at kickball I wasn't good at girls I used to make a habit of peeing in my pants Cause I was scared and I couldn't dance And nobody cared but I learned Today I'm glad to say I'm just like the rest Anonyme is best Anonyme is best And life grows stranger every day Has anybody dared to be more than dead It isn't my fault It isn't my fault It isn't my fault That I'm strange Mother died today Or maybe yesterday I don't know I don't know I don't know Got to ask my boss to let me go At the funeral they expected me to cry Well, I didn't I don't know why I don't know how Everybody's staring at me now What's gone to their heads What's gone to their heads It isn't my fault That I'm strange I'm strange I'm strange I'm strange I'm the stranger - This song would be located at the beginning since it does talk about the initial events and can serve as some type of medium in regards to what happened at the beginning of Meursault’s life without giving out too much information. It provides and important line in the story that serves the basis for the plot and much of the characters attitude in the story, “Mother (Maman) died today or maybe yesterday”. In the last stanza it provides more of how the book initially started. Oscar Ayala; #2 4th 4.) Don't Fall Asleep At The Helm by Sleeping with the Sirens I lost my heart, my home is the ocean. The waves underneath will soon be my home. I will fall asleep. I'll close my eyes and dream of days when I wasn't all alone. All that I know is gone (Take what is left of me now) All that I know is gone (Take what is left of me) Fall deeper and deeper, the sirens are singing your songs. I'll miss my breath, there's no more left. I'll miss the sound of the wind at my back. The depths have a number, they call you by name. Fall asleep, Davy Jones calls you. So fall asleep, fall asleep and dream. All that I know is gone (Take what is left of me now) All that I know is gone (Take what is left of me) Fall deeper and deeper, the sirens are singing your songs. - The sirens serve important because it reflects the whole situation with the killing of the Arab and how the police arrested Meursault. It also shows the aspects of how the setting was in the beach, or the moment of contact at least. All that Meursault knew at that point was gone since he had just shot someone he had barely met four times in cold blood. This song would be after he finishes killing the Arab. 5.) No Rain by Blind Melon All I can say is that my life is pretty plain I like watchin' the puddles gather rain And all I can do is just pour some tea for two and speak my point of view But it's not sane, It's not sane I just want some one to say to me I'll always be there when you wake Ya know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today So stay with me and I'll have it made And I don't understand why I sleep all day And I start to complain that there's no rain And all I can do is read a book to stay awake And it rips my life away, but it's a great escape escape...escape...escape... All I can say is that my life is pretty plain Oscar Ayala; #2 4th ya don't like my point of view ya think I'm insane Its not sane...it's not sane. - No rain demonstrates what the main character should be feeling and what he probably does feel if he would really show his emotion, but also helps in explaining what in actuality he is at the moment. He believes that life is plain and believes he wants Maries because she fulfills him with sex and other things. This song would be perfect to put when he is with Marie and is mourning his mother’s death allegedly, or after he awakens after the night they spent together. 6.) Closing Time by Semisonic Closing time Open all the doors and let you out into the world Closing time Turn all of the lights on over every boy and every girl Closing time One last call for alcohol so finish your whiskey or beer Closing time You don't have to go home but you can't stay here I know who I want to take me home I know who I want to take me home I know who I want to take me home Take me home Closing time Time for you to go out to the places you will be from Closing time This room won't be open till your brothers or your sisters come So gather up your jackets, move it to the exits I hope you have found a friend Closing time Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end I know who I want to take me home I know who I want to take me home I know who I want to take me home Take me home Closing time Time for you to go out to the places you will be from I know who I want to take me home I know who I want to take me home I know who I want to take me home Take me home Closing time Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end Oscar Ayala; #2 4th - The song describes the main characters monotonous life. His life that has almost entirely has been a routine where he always goes to eat at Celeste’s. But the catch is the line where every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. This can be described the events in which he goes to Celeste’s after important events like the death of his mother although he did wait a day to go since he knew they would be asking him questions on Maman’s funeral at the beginning of the novel. The song would best fit every time he goes to Celeste’s, but played in the background like as if it were being played by a recorder that is broken. 7.) A Place for my Head by Linkin Park I watch how the moon sits in the sky in the dark night Shining with the light from the sun The sun doesn't give light to the moon assuming The moon’s going to owe it one It makes me think of how you act to me You do favors and then rapidly You just turn around and start asking me about things that you want back from me I’m sick of the tension, sick of the hunger Sick of you acting like I owe you this Find another place, to feed your greed While I find a place to rest I want to be in another place I hate when you say you don’t understand (You’ll see it's not meant to be) I want to be in the energy, not with the enemy A place for my head Maybe someday I’ll be just like you and step on people like you do and Run away the people I thought I knew I remember back then who you were You used to be calm, used to be strong Used to be generous but you should’ve known That you’d wear out your welcome now you see how quiet it is, all alone I’m so sick of the tension, sick of the hunger Sick of you acting like I owe you this Find another place, to feed your greed While I find a place to rest I want to be in another place I hate when you say you don't understand (You'll see it's not meant to be) I want to be in the energy, not with the enemy A place for my head Oscar Ayala; #2 4th You try to take the best of me Go away I want to be in another place I hate when you say you don't understand (You'll see it's not meant to be) I want to be in the energy, not with the enemy A place for my head Shut up....what! I’m so sick of the tension, sick of the hunger Sick of you acting like I owe you this Find another place, to feed your greed While I find a place to rest - The song might as well be the theme song of the novel, but can also be put where he meets Raymond and Raymond gets in a fight with the Arab. Raymond believes that just because Meursault did a favor for him that they are now friends. The reason why it can be the theme song is that it can possibly be the internal conflict that is actually going on within the main character. Because there is something that happened to him in the past that made him be the way he is in the novel. In the song it says “you used to be strong, you used to be calm…now you see how quiet it is, all alone” which reflects the current situation with the character. 8.) Move Along by All American Rejects Go ahead as you waste your days with thinking When you fall everyone stands Another day and you've had your fill of sinking With the life held in your Hands are shaking cold These hands are meant to hold Speak to me, when all you got to keep is strong Move along, move along like I know you do And even when your hope is gone Move along, move along just to make it through Move along Move along So a day when you've lost yourself completely Could be a night when your life ends Such a heart that will lead you to deceiving All the pain held in your Hands are shaking cold Your hands are mine to hold Oscar Ayala; #2 4th Speak to me, when all you got to keep is strong Move along, move along like I know you do And even when your hope is gone Move along, move along just to make it through Move along (Go on, go on, go on, go on) When everything is wrong, we move along (Go on, go on, go on, go on) When everything is wrong, we move along Along, along, along When all you got to keep is strong Move along, move along like I know you do And even when your hope is gone Move along, move along just to make it through (Go on, go on, go on, go on) Right back what is wrong We move along - This song would be the closing song I believe where his hope is in fact gone and faces death itself. He feels no remorse and has beaten society in that case. He accepts the consequences as they may be. He just moves along and moves along and that is what makes him detached because his hope is in fact gone.
