this year’s annual reports supports that fact. In

Nike's Sixth Annual Community
Involvement Day Brings More
Than 900 Nike Volunteers Out
Beaverton, Oregon was the host of
Nikes sixth annual community
involvement day. There will be
games, and food and informational
stands.
In partnership with Volunteers of
America, Nike wants to give back to
the community. Focusing on child
hunger and promoting activeness in
our communities are only two of the
fun and exciting things Nike wants to
do for you.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
July 11 and it is the day. She is nervous and
scared, wishing to be renewed with an inner
strength that comes from within. It is there, but
it fades as she is taken into surgery. Chiari
malformation was the diagnosis. An
enlargement of one’s cerebellum.
Latoya Molten, a charge nurse went under a
life saving surgical procedure. Recovery went
well thanks to the doctors and nurses at
Riverside Hospital and Nike. Nike donated
thousands of dollars in therapeutic equipment
and gear to Riverside and its affiliates.
“Riverside saved my life, I don’t know where I
would be if it weren’t for all the caring people
that helped” ~Molten

PR IMPACT COMMUNITY
The Columbus Museum of art has a vision
to partner with the community. Their plan
is to engage visitors for now and in the
future. They want to partner with local
residents, businesses and tourists. Their
plans are to enhance visitor experiment
and engage a large audience. This out
reach impacts the community because
tourism brings in money. Since Ohio is not
the typical tourist destination this would be
a good to generate sales for retail and
restaurants or other local attractions.

A personality profile was completed on a
native Columbus young professional whom
is the number one financial agent at
Nationwide Insurance. At the ripe age of 34
she has earned her way to the top of the
charts among thousands of agents
throughout the United States and among
many man. It was a true honor to have the
opportunity to ask such an accomplished
sale woman how she has reached such
prestige status. Her response was
continually asking and making sure her
calendar was always full. She said her plans
have always included a 5-10 year
projection. She also stated that you are only
as good as your last sale and that keeps her
going.
IN THE NEWS
American airlines have been raking in the
bad fortune lately. First it was one seat
coming detached mid-flight, second it was a
second seat coming unattached mid-flight.
Currently the pilots have decided to strike
the company due to being unhappy with the
current pay scale. In addition to the pilot
issues this has trickled down to causing
major delays for flights. At one point up to
47% of the schedule flights were in delay.
This is not good for the airlines because
consumers are going to be less likely to
make arrangements with this airline.

Target Gives and Gives
The Target Corporation helps to build strong,
healthy and safe communities where team
members and guests live and work. In June,
Target introduced corporate responsibility goals.
These goals will be a part of the corporate road
map and report card in the years to come. Each
year, Target donates 5 percent of corporate
earnings to the community, and this year, that
amounted to a total of $209 million in dollars and
product. More than dollars alone, employees give
their time. Target believes the time given is just as
important as the 5 percent of income. In 2011,
Target team members gave more than 474,500
volunteer hours of service in their communities,
and Target has challenged itself to raise that
number to 700,000 hours each year by the end of
2015.
Feathers of Federally Protected Birds
can be collected by Indian Tribes
In an article dated October 13, 2012, The New
York Times reported that the Justice
Department will allow federally recognized
Indian tribes to posses endangered bird
feathers and parts. Federal law prohibits the
killing of eagles and the collection or
possession of endangered or federally
protected bird’s feathers. Tribe members will
be allowed to collect, wear and carry
endangered bird feathers, and collect bird
feathers in the wild as long as they do not
disturb the nest. Prior to the written policy
tribe members were not prosecuted, however,
collecting, wearing, or possessing the feathers
of federally protected birds was illegal.

Steve Thomas, Without Vision Finds the
Right
Path
Steve Thomas is a member of the State Consumer
Advisory Committee for the Ohio Rehabilitation
Services Commission and represents Marietta, Ohio.
Unable to work due to continuing vision problems,
Steve applied for disability compensation,
His first stop was to the Rehabilitation Services
Commission (RSC), where he was assigned a
counselor specializing in vocational rehabilitation
for individuals with vision loss. Working in tandem
with the counselor, Steve enrolled in and
successfully completed low vision and cane training.
Armed with greater self-confidence and a better
understanding of his disability, Steve was
encouraged to pursue his dream of becoming a
social worker and enrolled at Washington State, later
transferring to Akron University. In May of 1999,
Steve graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social
work. One hundred and twenty five resumes later,
Steve landed a grant-funded job with a local school
system and later moved on to become a Housing and
Urban Development (HUD) specialist for the
Community Action agency. Eventually, Steve
found his niche as a social worker at a local area
nursing home.
“…this was a tremendous experience for me, one
that I would never have been able to achieve without
the help of RSC and my wonderful counselor Debra
Miller”.
