Essay Tips for PY4
Essay Title: Describe and evaluate the Multi-store model of memory.
1. Remember that STRUCTURE is vital for a top band answer. The
easiest way to achieve this is to start with a CONTROVERSIAL
QUESTION in the first paragraph, and then try and answer it in the
conclusion.
2. The Multi-store model was the first attempt to provide a full
explanation of the whole memory process.
3. You therefore have to do 2 things:
a) Describe the Model and how it works (10 Marks AO1)
b) Use logic and research to decide whether the model really does
give an accurate picture of how human memory works (15 Marks
AO2)
4. As this is your first PY4 essay, here is an example of a controversial
question you could ask at the beginning: “The Multi-store model
was a historic first attempt to explain the full human memory
process – did Atkinson and Shiffrin succeed in that attempt?”
5. After describing the model (AO1), discuss its flaws and use evidence
that support or contradicts it.
6. Answer your controversial question in your conclusion (as it’s your
first PY4 essay, I’ll expect you to be pointing out weaknesses that
show the model needs improving)
7. If you’re writing this as research essay in 30 minutes, remember
that you are aiming for 3-4 sides of normal writing to get the right
depth of answer.
