Periodic Trends Student Choice Assessment For this alternative summative assessment, you will be assessed on the following objectives. Please be sure to show enough evidence to show master for each of these objectives, regardless of which of the products you choose to create. Relate the properties of the main-group elements to their electron arrangements. (must show evidence of at least 3 properties of families) Explain periodic trends across periods and down groups including; atomic radii, reactivity, ionization energy, and electronegativity. (At least 2 of these trends should be highlighted and explained) Relate trends in the periodic table to the atomic structures of elements. Choose one of the following options to demonstrate your understanding of atomic structure, the periodic table, and periodic trends. Make Periodic Trends Game This could be a card game, a board game, or ???. You should include instructions on how to play the game and it should require the player to show evidence of the objective above. You should provide an answer “key” if needed showing correct answers to the game. Make a Mobile showing the families of the periodic table and at least three properties of each. Mobile should be organized to show and explain trends and relate trends to atomic structure. Be creative Create a song or rap to help remember the families of the periodic table and the properties of the family. Your song should also include at least 2 of the trends we have studied in this unit and make a connection between the atomic structure and the trends. (include lyrics and a recording or video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDp9hUf_SV8 Periodic Scrapbook create a family scrapbook for the periodic table. Scrapbook should highlight family properties as well as at least two of the trends in the objectives. Be sure to link the atomic structure to the properties and trends. All products must be done individually and will be graded based on the rubric on the following page. This assessment is due on Monday, February 1st. Periodicity Choice Project Rubric Excellent A Good B OK C Needs Work D Product shows a clear understanding of the properties of the family. At least 3 properties are discussed. Students shows clear, detailed understanding of at least 2 trends on the periodic table, discussing the trends both down a family and across a period. Product shows a good understanding of the properties of the family. At least 2 properties are discussed Student shows clear understanding of at least 2 trends on the periodic table and how these trends change both down a family and across a period. Product shows little understanding of the properties of the family. Atomic structure Product shows a clear understanding of the atomic structure of the element or elements in the family and how this affects properties and periodic trends. Product Quality Product is of excellent quality and can be shown to others with pride. Product shows good understanding of the atomic structure of the element or elements in the family and how this affects periodic trends. Product is of good quality but has a couple of detracting details. Product shows some understanding of the properties of the family. At least 1 property is discussed. Student shows some understanding of trends on the periodic table. 2 trends are discussed but understanding is unclear or did not discuss trends in both directions. Product shows some understanding of atomic structure but contains some errors. Link to periodic trends unclear or weak. Product has some good points but could be improved. Product looks messy, illegible and needs major improvement. Family Properties Periodic Trends Student demonstrates misconceptions about trends on the periodic table. Product shows little understanding of atomic structure and how this relates to properties and trends.
