Jesus understood the truths behind his teachings Questions for us Jesus Learned line upon line precept upon precept. He Himself was an effective learner (Luke 2:52). Do I understand the subject I Everything that Christ taught could be easily traced back to a doctrine. This made it clear why He was teaching it. He commanded that we first seek understanding and knowledge and then we could teach (D&C 11:21). Christ was not satisfied with His students acquisition of superficial knowledge. He meant what He taught to penetrate deeply (Psalm 51:6). am teaching? Do I seek out more information about the things that I teach? Do I come to lessons prepared? Do I teach only facts or do I teach the underlying principles that govern those facts? Do I seek the guidance of the spirit in what and how I teach? Love was behind every form of teaching. Questions for us? He taught that the first two Why do I want to teach? great commandments were to love God and His children. He taught with these ends in mind. His love demonstrated his pure intentions. With his motivations understood by himself and others his teachings had maximum impact. He loved his students enough to correct them . Why do I want my students to succeed? What keeps me working with someone when it is difficult? Who or what does my teaching show that I love? Do I pray for those I teach? In his teaching Christ gave of himself Christ lived and died for those He taught. By this He demonstrated that He chose to invest Himself personally in their lives (Alma 7:12-14). He did not his “own will but the will of Him that sent [Him]” on behalf of, us, His learners (John 6:38-39). He took personal time to individually touch his pupils lives. Questions for us What do I give of myself to my students? Could I, like Jesus, substitute “sacrifice for” in the place of “love” in the statement I Love you? Do I spend time with, think about, and prepare for my students? He demonstrated all teachings by actions He not only taught to assist the poor and needy, He went to them (Luke 4:18). He was the perfect example of love and consideration (3nephi 12:48). He taught men to act and did so Himself (3 Nephi 19:17-25). Questions for us? Do I seek to still expand my understanding and knowledge? Do I apply and practice what I teach, even if no one is there to see? Do I look for ways to show my students instead of just telling them? Christ understood the key role of participation Questions for us? He lead people to truth, he Do I look for creative and did not push them. He was a shepherd, not a sheep herder (1Nephi 22:25). He asked meaningful questions that invited pondering and response (Example Matt 16:26-27). He addressed and taught the individual, not just the group. This allowed them to personally invest in what He taught. interesting ways to engage my students? Do I ask thought provoking questions that help my student learn how to apply what I am teaching? Do I try to engage those students who struggle to participate? Do I know my students and their names? Christ illustrated what he taught in a relatable way He used common examples from the everyday life of His learners to teach them principles and truths. He asked hypothetical questions that helped His learners see themselves in new ways. He teaches men according to their own “language, unto their understanding” (2Nephi 31:3). Questions for us Do I use vocabulary and language that is easy to be understood by those I teach? Or do I say things that will make me look intelligent? Do I help students connect the dots of what we are learning with its relationship to their lives? Do I invite students to apply the precepts we are learning to their lives? What were the results of Christ’s teaching? Questions for us His teaching healed and What should I see as an in expanded souls (Jacob 2:8). When he taught he lifted others so that they could consider things on a higher plane (John 1:12). He Inspired further learning (2 Nephi 4:16). His Teaching accepted always changed something. Even though he was the master teacher not everyone chose to learn from him (Alma 5:37). my students after a few classes, a semester, a few years? What do my students retain from my class? How do my students do in their other classes? Have my students lives better or worse for having me as their teacher?
