Florida Atlantic University Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader Contract Center for Learning And Student Success (CLASS) www.fau.edu/si The SI Coordinator for FAU’s Center for Learning And Student Success is responsible for all Supplemental Instruction (SI) policies and program management. SI leaders are considered Center for Learning And Student Success (CLASS) employees who report to the SI Coordinator. The SI Coordinator, with the help of CLASS staff members, will help facilitate, supervise, instruct, and mentor SI Leaders. As such, the SI Leaders can go to either the CLASS staff or SI Coordinator for any support or assistance. Training Responsibilities All SI leaders are required to attend training prior to the start of the semester. All SI Leaders must participate in any on-going training(s) and peer observations. Backboard modules must be completed every two weeks. Failure to complete a module in the timeframe allotted will delay pay. Continued failure to complete training modules may result in termination from the SI Leader position. Class Responsibilities Attend and be a model student during all class meetings as assigned, take notes, complete homework (if needed), and read all assigned materials. Sit in a different seat for each class meeting (unless this practice is not allowed by the instructor of the class). Make weekly announcements in class (or at the frequency allowed by your faculty member). Post information on the blackboard/dry erase board at the beginning of each class about upcoming SI session(s). Provide promotional items such as flyers or handouts to students a minimum of 4 times throughout the semester (16 week course). Solicit input from your faculty member with the creation of worksheets and handouts for students. Email students at least once per week with an outline of what is going on in SI. o Copy anevin@fau.edu to every correspondence to your class(es). SI Leaders who miss class for extenuating circumstances (illness, death in family) MUST contact the SI office IN WRITING – preferably before the class absence, but no later than 24 hours following the absence. “Class checks” will be made throughout the semester to verify SI leader attendance, punctuality and professionalism. SI Session Responsibilities Conduct at least three one-hour study sessions each week (specific required number of sessions as delineated on your offer letter). No sessions will be held on University holidays. The SI Leader has the discretion to make-up the session or not. Prepare for SI sessions by reading required material, working problems when applicable, creating handouts, and organizing course material. Provide handouts weekly during SI sessions, including review sheets, pre-tests and posttests, worksheets, and bookmarks. Submit copies of all materials to the Center for Learning And Student Success (CLASS) the week they were distributed. These MUST be submitted in order to complete your assigned duties and earn your paycheck. Initials________ No homework or graded projects may be worked on during SI sessions without approval by faculty, and submission of appropriate paperwork. If no students show for a session, the SI Leader is required to stay for a minimum of 31 minutes. Leaders must write a note on the board for late-arriving students. Obtain attendance sheets from Center for Learning And Student Success (CLASS) and record session attendance (also available at www.fau.edu/si) ALL Attendance must be accounted for. Do not lose or misplace attendance sheets. Enter SI session attendance data in the CLASS office weekly for accurate data collection. Meet with SI faculty for 15-20 minutes each week to provide feedback on the SI sessions as well as get approval for any handouts as needed. SI leaders will be compensated for actual hours worked per week up to the maximum hours on the offer letter. This is typically dependent upon the number of hours of lecture you are required to attend and the number of sections with different instructors. Students who want/need more hours may get volunteer hours for additional time. SI Leaders are required to arrive 5-10 minutes early for all sessions and must meet for all scheduled sessions. If an emergency arises, please contact the office immediately at 561297-0906 (front-desk; Eddie), 561-297-0945 (Angel’s office), or at 561-297-2432 (Dr. Bebergal’s office). Please call until you reach a person if calling between 8am-5pm. Please enter these phone numbers in your cell phone. If no one can be reached in the office, please call a staff members’ cell phone (listed on the contact list in your training packet) Ensure your room is in excellent order prior to leaving. Wipe off all boards, push in chairs, wipe off tables, throw away any garbage, papers, etc. Office Hour Responsibilities Student assistance is of primary concern during office hours. All other responsibilities are secondary to assisting students. If no students are present for assistance, assist other leaders, or complete handouts, lesson plans, course readings and homework, Blackboard modules, class emails, and other office paperwork as necessary. If all work is complete, you MUST check with the SI Coordinator and/or CLASS staff to see if there are other tasks to be worked on. Personal acts (cell-phone calls, homework, lunch, etc.) may only be done with permission from your supervisor. Failure to adhere to the Office Hour Responsibility guidelines may lead to loss of office hours. Numerous violations may lead to loss of position. Ensure the workroom is left in excellent working condition for the next group of students (log-off of the computers, push in chairs, wipe down tables, etc.) Once SI sessions and Office Hours are established, the schedule must be followed with these exceptions. In the case of emergency cancellation, appropriate documentation must be submitted immediately upon return. An emergency is defined as: death in the family documented illness, other extenuating circumstances. All extenuating circumstances will be evaluated on a case by case basis by the SI Coordinator. Initials________ SI sessions may not be cancelled for any reason without prior written confirmation from the SI Coordinator. Sessions canceled without approval may result in termination of the SI position. Each SI Leader will be allowed to reschedule 2 sessions per semester for personal reasons with advance notice and approval (at least 7 days). All requests to reschedule must be submitted in writing a minimum of one week in advance. The SI Coordinator may deny the request if the request significantly disrupts or compromises benefit to the students or the integrity of the SI program. The SI Leader will receive an email response within 48 hours, confirming the request. The SI leader should not make any plans for rescheduling, or notify the students, until the email response is received regarding confirmation of the request as well as time and location changes. Upon receipt of confirmation, the SI leader must inform their students of the schedule change via email and class announcement. Evaluation Responsibilities The CLASS staff will observe/co-facilitate and evaluate SI leaders once during the first three weeks of the semester and other times throughout the semester. Feedback will be provided via a one-on-one meeting with the observer. Returning SI leaders may co-facilitate sessions to help provide initial support and guidance to new SI leaders. SI leaders will have the opportunity to complete peer observations and evaluations as well. This MUST be done a minimum of twice per semester (for pay) and beyond that for volunteer hours. SI leaders will complete a self-evaluation each semester to assess their performance as an SI leader. The results will be discussed with the SI Coordinator. Other Responsibilities Maintain a professional attitude. Keep matters such as class standards, grades, and student complaints confidential. This attitude should be consistent with the faculty teaching the class as well as the mission and policies of CLASS. Professional behavior and appropriate dress are expected of SI leaders at all times. No hats, sunglasses, or inappropriate attire may be worn during SI sessions. SI study sessions are not offered on University holidays or when the University is closed due to inclement weather. If the University is open and weather conditions prohibit safe travel to your SI session, contact the SI Coordinator immediately. A two-week notice is requested prior to resigning as an SI leader. Time sheets must be completed and turned in to the Center for Learning And Student Success (CLASS) by 2pm on every other Wednesday as indicated on the pay period schedule. Failure to do so will result in not getting paid until the next pay period. Submit only hours actually worked. All lesson plans, handouts and attendance records must be submitted prior to submitting your time sheets. SI Leaders may NOT get paid for helping others (tutoring or other assistance) for the course for which they are hired as an SI Leader for the semester in which they are hired. SI Leaders wishing to provide assistance beyond the hours paid through the SI program may get volunteer hours for that time.
