A Message from the Dean
Community colleges represent one of the educational institutions that prepare
students who have completed high school to join the labor market. They also pave the
way for distinguished students to pursue their university studies immediately after
graduation. The Cabinet's decree No. 73, dated 5/3/1422 was issued to approve the
Decree of the Supreme Economic Council No. 4/22, dated 4/3/1422 H that stated the
inauguration of thirteen community colleges, which will be affiliated to the Ministry
of Higher Education. AlKharj Community College
(KCC)
was one of those
colleges.
First, AlKharj was affiliated with Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic
University. Then, the was affiliated with King Saud University according to a cabinet
decree issued on 5/7/1429. Last, it has been affiliated with Alkharj University
(Salman Bin Abdulaziz University) since 1430. On the basis of the recommendations
of the working committees, which discussed the bylaws of these colleges, the
administrators of Salman Bin Abdulaziz University, including its rector, seek to
implement comprehensive and flexible programmemes in the College in order to meet
the needs of the local community and provide development plans with qualified
graduates.
This guide includes an introduction about
(KCC),
its vision, mission and
objectives. It also includes the prospective employment classifications of graduates in
the labor market. In addition, it presents the departments, majors, the study
programmes and all the information and guidance the students require in order to
make thoughtful decisions with regards to their future.
Finally, I urge all students to have serious keen motivation and hard work
throughout their studies. They should regularly attend all classes and have the benefits
of all the facilities in the College.
Dean of the College
Dr. Ali bin Mohamed Hawsawi

Alumni Affairs
Business Administration Department is considered one of the most
popular departments in the college as it is highly demanded by students.
It is the biggest department in the college due to the various programmess
offered to the students (i.e. accounting, marketing and secretarial and
office management). Notably, 30% of the graduates are already
employees in governmental and private sectors, especially in the
governorates of AlKharj and Riyadh. This is a clear indication of the
contribution that the department helps develop the human resources
members in the public and private sectors. It is worth mentioning that
almost 75% of the graduates are already employed by the public and the
private sectors. This gives strong evidence that those graduates enjoy a
high level of competence and commitment. The department has never
hesitated to exert any efforts in building channels of communication with
those graduates through many workshops and alumni meetings.

these programmes are high school graduates, and they are trained and equipped with
the necessary skills to meet the needs of the labour market.
The Computer Science Department at (KCC) was founded since the College was
opened in order to provide students with the skills and abilities to understand the
modern technology and to acquire the necessary skills in programming languages.
The student is expected to learn how to design web pages, how to create and
administrate databases, how to establish a network and how to administrate the
network. The student is also expected to learn how to create programmes by using
several programming languages.
2- About the Department
The Computer Science Department is one of the academic departments in (KCC). It
has existed since the emergence of the College in 1423/1424 H. The Department
provides its graduates with a diploma degree in two majors; the first one is

Introduction
Department of English at (KCC), Salman Bin Abdulaziz
University offers an Associate Diploma programme in English Language
that aims at providing students with specialist knowledge in English.
Throughout the courses of the programme, the Department aims at
enhancing the student's competence in the language skills, critical
thinking and literature. The Department realizes the crucial role that
translation plays in developing the linguistic competence of the students.
Hence, it offers the students a number of basic courses in translation to
enable them to acquire the necessary principles and techniques of
translation.
Being keenly aware of the University mission and goals, the
Department, in cooperation with the Community Service and Continuing
Education centre, has already prepared several different courses to meet
the needs of the local community. In order to accomplish these goals, the
Department employs a number of competitively selected and highly
qualified faculty. The Department also uses two language labs for
teaching its computer-based language courses.
About the Department:
Department of English was established in 1423 (2002)as a part of
(KCC). Bearing in mind the overall objectives of (KCC) and being
committed thereto, Department of English has mapped out for itself a
number of academic objectives that meet the needs of the students. The
Department offers an Associate Diploma in English language. Besides, it
provides language skill courses and other courses in business English and
technical English to support the other two departments in the College and
50

At the outset, a placement test is held to all the students who want
to join the Department. Those who get a score of 80% and more can
directly study at the first level. But those who get less than 80% should
be enrolled in an intensive English programme for one semester. They
study the four major language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. The intensive course aims to improve the students' ability in
these skills and to prepare them to join the English Department.
Upon successful completion of the intensive course, the students
join the actual academic English programme. Over the course of two
years, they are exposed to skill courses and linguistics courses. In
addition to the advanced courses that they study in language skills, they
study courses in linguistics, literature and translation. In more specific
terms, prospective students are required to (a) take basic courses to fulfil
College and University requirements, and (b) take courses assigned by
the Department of English. The total number of credit hours in all of the
foregoing categories is 78.

Community Services:
Department of English maintains strong relations with the local
community institutions in general, and with the Ministry of Education in
particular. It usually welcomes hundreds of pre-university students to stay
several hours at the College and have a clear idea about the postsecondary school stage. The Department also offers educational
consultations to the Ministry of Education upon request. Besides, the
Department looks forward to organizing, in the very near future,
educational workshops for the teachers of English and the mentors at
Alkharj Educational Zone. The Department's services are not restricted to
Alkharj. Our faculty members extend their services to other cities in the
Kingdom as well.

Supporting Units
English Language Club
Overview:
Department of English launched The English Language Club in 2010 to
encourage the students to practice their English language and to express
their opinions, suggestions, notices and contributions. The students are
highly motivated to participate in all the extracurricular activities
organized by the club. The club enhances the cooperation between the
students and the staff members in a relaxed atmosphere. The club
includes ten members. Four are instructors appointed by the Department
council every two years. The other members are students who represent
the different levels of the English department and the other two
departments of the college.
Objectives and Activities
English Language Club aims to accomplish the following objectives:
1. providing students with the extra-curricular activities that develop
students’ skills (listening, speaking, writing and reading).
2. encouraging students to use language in a relaxed atmosphere and
away from the classes’ pressure.
3. enhancing ties of cooperation between students and teaching
members.
4. helping students get benefits from modern technology in learning
English (i.e. the Internet).
5. providing students with some educational tools such as English
newspapers, magazines, maps, wall pictures and so on.
6. offering some extra activities to satisfy the needs of distinguished
students.
7. presenting some strategies to help poor students learn basic
language skills.
8. presenting lectures and discussions which raise awareness about
important issues such as smoking and car accidents.
9. screening selected programmes and films which enable students to
talk about their religion, culture, customs and history.
10.inviting professors to deliver seminars.
Club Philosophy
The philosophy of the English Club is to find auspicious opportunities for
students to practice English in a relaxed atmosphere. It tries to open all
the channels of learning English which must not be limited to the
61
classroom environment. Students must effectively get involved in English
and use it as a medium of communication as much as they can. The
English Language Club offers some techniques and activities that cannot
be applied within the classroom environment. The Club invites students
to enjoy learning English. It is a modest attempt to develop students’
English proficiency.
