SHEEP BRAIN DISSECTION
LEARNING TARGET, SUCCESS CRITERIA &
CLAIM
LEARNING TARGET
• BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY ANATOMICAL STRUCTURES IMPORTANT IN THE
STUDY OF ADDICTION
SUCCESS CRITERIA
• BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE LOCATION AND EXPLAIN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF
THE FOLLOWING STRUCTURES:
• CEREBRAL CORTEX , BRAIN STEM, CEREBELLUM, INSULA, CORPUS CALLOSUM,
HYPOTHALAMUS , THALAMUS, HIPPOCAMPUS, MENINGES, & AMYGDALA
CLAIM:
• A SHEEP BRAIN CAN BE USED TO LEARN HUMAN BRAIN ORGANIZATION
AND TO BECOME MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE LOCATION OF SPECIFIC
BRAIN STRUCTURES IMPORTANT IN UNDERSTANDING DRUG RESPONSE
EXPECTATIONS FOR LAB WRITE-UPS IN THIS
COURSE
PRE-LAB TO INCLUDE:
AFTER THE LAB
• LEARNING TARGETS
• POST LAB QUESTIONS
• MATERIALS NEEDED
• SUMMARY OF WHAT YOU LEARNED
IN THE LAB- WHAT WAS YOU MOST
IMPORTANT "AH HA" MOMENT?
• DETAILED OUTLINE OF THE
PROCEDURE LEAVING ROOM FOR
LAB OBSERVATIONS/SKETCHES AS
INDICATED IN THE PROCEDURE
DURING THE LAB
• COMPLETE LAB
OBSERVATIONS/SKETCHES
• ANSWERS TO ANY LAB PACKET
QUESTIONS
PRE-LAB MUST BE COMPLETE TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE LAB
MAKE-UPS MAY NOT BE SCHEDULED,
DEPENDING ON THE LAB
POST LAB QUIZZES OCCUR
TYPICALLY 2 DAYS POST LAB
MATERIALS
• FOR THIS LAB:
• BRAIN BOARD/BENCH PAPER
• SCISSORS
• SCALPEL (HANDLE WITH CARE:
VERY SHARP)
• GLOVES
• FORCEPS
• PROBE
• SHEEP BRAIN
This is what it looks like
after the meninges have
been removed
PROCEDURE
A. WHOLE BRAIN ORGANIZATION
•
•
WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO
LOCATE BEFORE CUTTING THE
BRAIN IN HALF?
WHAT ARE YOU EXPECTED TO
DO?
LOCATE THE FOLLOWING:
•
CEREBRAL CORTEX
•
CEREBELLUM
•
MENINGES
•
BRAIN STEM
•
OPTIC CHIASM
•
LOBES: PARIETAL, TEMPORAL,
FRONTAL
DO THE FOLLOWING:
• COMPARE SHEEP BRAIN TO HUMAN AS
AVAILABLE
• LOCATE OLFACTORY LOBES
• IDENTIFY THE SULCCI AND GYRI
• WHICH ARE THE HILLS & WHICH ARE
THE VALLEYS?
• DESCRIBE THE TEXTURE OF THE
CEREBRUM
• LOCATE CEREBELLUM
• HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM THE
CEREBRUM
• WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
• NOTE BRAINSTEM POSITION
• WHY IS THERE A DIFFERENCE
COMPARED TO THAT OF A HUMANS
PROCEDURE
B. REMOVING THE MENINGES
1.
REMOVE THE MENINGES USE
SCISSORS
2.
• LABELED SKETCH OF ONE HEMISPHERE.
• VIEW 1 (CORPUS COLLOSUM FACING UP):
HOLD BRAIN TOP SIDE FACING
UP
- IDENTIFY EACH HEMISPHERE- USE SCALPEL TO CUT THROUGH
THE CORPUS COLLOSUM
- WHAT’S THE FUNCTION OF THE
CORPUS COLLOSUM?
•
FIND:
•
•
•
•
CORPUS COLLOSUM
VENTRICLES
CEREBELLUM
THALAMUS
• VIEW2:
(CORPUS COLLOSUM FACING DOWN)
PROCEDURE
DISSECTION PROCEDURE
C. WITH ONE HEMISPHERE:
D. EXAMINE CUT 3 & CUT 4
• WHAT % OF BRAIN IS GRAY V.
WHITE MATTER?
• FIND PYRAMIDAL CELLS
• WHERE GRAY & WHITE MATTER
MEET
• LINKED TO HALLUCINATIONS
IDENTIFY INSULA
E. USING OTHER HALF OF BRAIN
CUT CEREBELLUM FREE
• LOOK @ WHITE MATTER=AXONS
PROCEDURE-EXAMPLE
G. ** HARD PART FIND THE
HIPPOCAMPUS
1.
FIND DIP WHERE THE OPTIC
CHIASM IS (WHERE TEMPORAL LOBE
& FRONTAL LOBE MEET)
2.
MAKE A HORIZONTAL CUT ONE
FINGER WIDTH BEHIND THAT
LANDMARK (TOWARD BRAINSTEM)
3.
PLACE THUMB ON BRAINSTEM AND
THE OTHER ON THE CEREBRUM
• ROTATE THUMBS APART
• HIPPOCAMPUS SHOULD POP OUT
• HIPPOCAMPUS DIAGRAM
HIPPOCAMPUS!
POST LAB QUESTIONS
1.DESCRIBE THE RELEVANCE TO
THIS COURSE OF THE
FOLLOWING BRAINS PARTS:
2. WHY DID WE HAVE TO DISSECT
AN ACTUAL SHEEP BRAIN RATHER
THAN LOOK AT PICTURES?
• HIPPOCAMPUS• INSULA-
• THALAMUS• HYPOTHALAMUS• BRAINSTEM-
3. WHY DIDN’T WE DISSECT A
HUMAN BRAIN? (WHY IS THE
SHEEP BRAIN ALMOST AS GOOD?)
CEC SUMMARY OF YOUR RESULTS
• CLAIM: RESTATE THE CLAIM AND STATE WHETHER YOUR HYPOTHESIS
WAS ACCEPTED, REJECTED OR INCONCLUSIVE
• EVIDENCE: SITE SPECIFIC DATA FROM THE DATA TABLE THAT SUPPORTS
THE CLAIM. SHOULD INCLUDE HIGH AND LOW VALUES, ETC.
• COMMENTARY: EXPLAIN WHY THE DATA (EVIDENCE) SUPPORTS THE
CLAIM. REVISIONS?
DISSECTION PROTOCOL
• MUST HAVE LAB NOTEBOOK WITH PRE-LAB OUT
• NO FOOD/BEVERAGES OUT- BACK ON COUNTERS PLEASE
• GROUPS OF 2-3
• FINE TO DISSECT AT TABLES… JUST CLEAN THEM WITH CLEANER PROVIDED
• BE RESPECTFUL OF SPECIMEN & OF YOUR LAB PARTNERS
• OBTAIN MATERIALS NEEDED FOR GROUP
