5/27/10 BOARD OF EDUCATION Closter, New Jersey AGENDA REGULAR MEETING Hillside Elementary School May 27, 2010 7:30 PM Meeting called to order by Vice President Goldstein at 7:30 PM. The following members were present: Mr. Goldstein, Ms. Park, Mr. Micera, Ms. Ginsberg, Ms. Marinaccio The following members were absent: Mr. Jakab, Ms. Forstmann, Ms. Pfeiffer, Mr. Linn Also present: Ms. Newberry, Mr. Iappelli STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT: The New Jersey Open Public Meetings Act was enacted to ensure the right of the public to have advance notice of and to attend the meeting of public bodies at which any business affecting their interests is discussed or acted upon. In accordance with the provisions of this Act, the Secretary to the Board of Education has caused notice of this meeting by having the date, time, and place thereof, posted at each school building within the district, the Board of Education office, the Office of the Borough Clerk, and transmitted to The Record, Press Journal, and Suburbanite newspapers. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT Ms. Newberry welcomed Mr. Roem and Ms. Caruso. The pool of applicants is tremendous. Interviews for the AP position at Tenakill have started; a number of the applicants have experience. District has received over 1,000 resumes for open positions. 1 5/27/10 PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS Principal Baffa reported on Hillside’s happenings: Concluded professional development sessions with LitLife Completing NWEA testing Elementary interviews are in progress. Class trips scheduled for the Closter Nature Center, Museum of Natural History, and Newark Museum Twelve seniors form NVRHS are doing their senior service at Hillside. Many teachers held Mother's Day celebrations. Kindergarten orientation is coming up. Thanked the PTO for sponsoring the Book Fair. Grade 4 Band Concert was a success. Hillside students that participated in the Northern Valley Poetry Festival were recognized. Mr. Baffa thanked Mr. Weaver for his assistance throughout the school year. AP Weaver reported: Students embraced the NJASK testing, and he thanked the teachers. Hillside will end the year with a school spirit week. He thanked the Board for its support. Principal DaGiau reported on Tenakill’s activities: Attended the Boston and Greenkill field trips Thanked all the teachers, chaperones and facilitators of the trips Grade 8 had a picnic at Northern Valley Regional High School. Commended the students that participated in the peer-to-peer retreat at the Closter Library Ms. Kahn put together a full day of activities for a visiting author. Grade 4 parent orientation at Tenakill is June 1st. AP Grammerstorf reported: Reviewed the NJASK testing Discussed a number of upcoming events in June for the 8th graders: Washington DC trip, dinner dance, awards assembly, yearbook breakfast, and graduation MINUTES Moved by Mr. Micera, seconded by Ms. Park to approve the following minutes. OLD BUSINESS Ms. Newberry discussed the preschool program and its possibilities for the future. Mr. Iappelli informed the Board that construction of the new preschool classroom is delayed because the State has not released the Preliminary Eligible Cost (PEC) approval letter. The Christie administration has withheld all PEC letters statewide. The PEC letter is required before any construction can began, and it is for zoning board approval. BE IT RESOLVED that the Closter Board of Education will adjourn to a Closed Session to discuss the following: Contractual Matters 10 5/27/10 The matters so discussed will be disclosed to the public as soon as and to the extent that such disclosure can be made without adversely affecting the public.
