Welcome to Lakeview Middle School Danielle Hobbs, Matt Anglea, Jeff Mabbitt & Brittany Riebel Lakeview Middle School Mission Statement Lakeview Middle School is committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment with opportunities for each student to develop the skills and knowledge to become responsible, successful citizens. Organizational Structure Lakeview Middle School services young adolescents ranging from 5th to 8th grade. Our school centers around interdisciplinary team teaching with each team consisting of 4 core subject teachers per grade. We also feature a friendly and talented related arts teaching team. Advantages of Team Teaching • • • • • Support - knowing there are others who can help you Common Core Planning - being able to bounce ideas off of others Student involvement - students feel involved and more connected Cross-curricular discussion and application of material being taught Teacher-Student Ratio = 1:20 Disadvantages of Team Teaching • • Personal goals may not align with the team's Time Commitment - Common Core Planning time Lakeview Schedule This schedule provides a snapshot of the daily schedule for our 5th & 6th grade students. The 7th and 8th grade student schedule mirrors this this with one exception. Their Lunch and Reading & guidance periods are switched. "Team Huddles" Together everyone accomplishes more. We believe that teaming encourages our teachers to share their time, space, instructional and curricular emphasis as well as a common teaching philosophy. Teaming Requirements: - Meet for 45 minutes four to five times per week - Meet weekly with building staff (counselor, resources teachers and administrators) - Prepare a "Game Plan" that is to be discussed prior to each meeting Game Plan: - Address discipline issues - Discuss upcoming events - Preview lessons plans - Review student progress Curriculum What are the resources that we have? Curricula that is tested Instruction Our school curriculum is designed to instruct our students in ways that meet their learning needs to help make the material applicable and relatable. In our classrooms, we include group work, class discussions, mini-lessons as well as learning stations as part of our instruction. Assessment Our teachers design their own tests to best fit their classroom. Students are assessed using forced-choice questions, short answer questions, as well as performance based testing. We believe that students learn through interaction with the material alongside their peers. This encourages students to become actively engages in their academics. Blooms Taxonomy serves as the foundation for questioning. We work to include a wide range of questions to help students react to the material on a variety of levels. Technology is a useful tool that is frequently used by teachers and students to help increase understanding and interaction with the material. Examples of technology that are used in classrooms include SMARTboards, Elmo projector and Ipads. Instructional Practices We strongly believe in finding ways to reach all students to help them become more connected with their academics. Students participating in athletics must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or greater. Students with exceptionalities may be eligible for extracurricular activities. Within them, students have the chance to connect with others and learn lifelong skills, such as cooperation and problem solving Get Involved At Lakeview Middle School, we believe that successful learning requires support from those both inside and outside of the school. Therefore, we actively work to engage the parents of students and the community members to assist in the growth of our students. Parent & Community Involvement Volunteer Programs Parents and community members are encouraged to volunteer by signing up with a classroom teacher or in the office to help meet the needs of the school. Presentations Parents and community members are welcome to appear as a "guest speaker" within the school to share their life experiences with young students. Advocacy Groups Parents and community members are encouraged to join in on a cause to help promote positive changes while working alongside school staff members. Falcon Fun Nights Parents and community members are welcome to attend Falcon Fun Nights on the first Thursday of every month. The Related Arts Team and the extracurricular activities leaders are responsible for coordinating fun-filled nights to promote school unity and student success. Parental Involvement Education Parents are educated about the developmental changes that are likely to occur with their student. They are also given information about school policies and guidelines. Counseling Guidance counselors are available for parents and students to meet with to discuss behavioral issues and to develop a plan of improvement. Parenting classes are also offered to assist parents in developing better skills to help their child at home. Grievances Parents are allowed to formally file a complaint with the school's principal when necessary. Homework Help Parents are welcome to attend bi-weekly information tutoring sessions lead by the core classroom teachers to gain inside knowledge on how to best assist their child with homework. Community Involvement Partnerships/Collaborations Community members are encouraged to involve students in programs to benefit those in the community (ex: Red Cross, soup kitchens, YMCA). Service Learning Community members volunteer their time to educate and assist students on how to help improve their school, their home and their community. Resource Sharing Community members help gather resources to assist students within the school to help meet the needs of our families. (ex:local health care agencies, vision care) Lakeview Middle School We are committed to providing our child with a strong educational foundation, valuable life skills and a good, moral character.
