Lakeview Elementary Newsletter Mr. Scott Taylor, Principal May 22, 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians: Welcome to our last school newsletter for the year! The long, snowy, and cold winter seems like it changed to summer very quickly. It seems like just yesterday our students were arriving to start the year and now it is rapidly coming to a close. I want to wish our 3rd grade students best wishes as they move to Lakeview Middle School for 4th grade. They are ready for the next phase of their education. Keep striving for high academic and personal goals each and every year. This year we have only one retirement from our staff. We will miss Mrs. Bristol, who was a long-time 1st grade teacher and more recently has been our Title 1 Coordinator, along with many other tasks. Mrs. Bristol cares deeply for the students of Lakeview and she will be missed. The last day of classes will be Tuesday, June 2nd. This is an early release day for our students. Students being picked up will be dismissed at 11:45am and students riding the bus will be dismissed at 11:50am. A sack lunch can be purchased this day and students will eat prior to leaving for the day. Report cards will come on this day as well. We have a few events prior to the last day. There will be No School on Monday, May 25th as it is Memorial Day. Our 1st grade students will spend the morning at Lakeview High on Tuesday, May 26th as they prepare for their Patriotic Music Concert which will be held that night at LHS at 7pm. 1st grade will have their field trip to OH WOW! On Thursday, May 28th. 3rd Grade will tour LMS on Tuesday, May 26th while 2nd grade will go to Imagination Station on May 26th. Kindergarten will go to Imagination Station on Friday, May 29th. Lots of trips prior to the end of the year. The first day of classes for students in grades 1-12 will be Monday, August 24th. Kindergarten staggered start will be Tuesday-Friday, August 25th-28th with the first day for all Kindergarten students on Monday, August 31st. The passage of our bond issue on May 5th certainly has put a buzz in our community and our staff. The thought of a new K-8 building being ready for us in two years is exciting. We appreciate all of the support. Lots of tough work left to be done in the planning and implementation but that will be worth it. I wish all our families a happy and safe summer. Keep learning alive in the summer. It has been proven that many students have a regression over summer. Our public library in Cortland has a wonderful summer reading program. You can do many things at home as well to keep the mind active as well as all those fun summer activities. Educationally, Mr. Taylor, Principal Fruits and Vegetable Contest a Big Hit at LES Once again this year, Lakeview Schools hosted their fruits and vegetables contest during the first week of May. Students who eat a serving of fruit or vegetable receive a ticket that can be entered for a raffle of a bike for a male and female student. Students can earn multiple tickets during the week. This week alone we had over 3,300 servings during the week. The goal is to get students to try fruits and vegetables and perhaps build happy eating habits that will last a lifetime. This year Leo P. and Sophia M. won the bikes. Thanks to the Lakeview Wellness Committee for donating the bikes and thanks to our parent volunteers which helped with supplying the tickets after each serving were eaten by our students. Certainly it is a fun week with a chance to win a bike but the end result is the hope to encourage lifelong positive eating habits. ****************************************************************************** Pizza with the Principal We recently had our April Pizza with the Principal.
