Don't think you are, know you are…..SPANISH INSIDE
The SPANISH Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You
can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can
feel it when you go to work… when you go to church…
EVERYTHING IS IN SPANISH….
The CAPS are my interpretation of the Matrix. EH
Dear beloved AP Spanish students:
I am so happy we will be taking this journey together and that you have trusted me to guide you. For those of
you who have been in my room before know this….




I speak all in Spanish, except for clarification and will be expecting you to do the same.
You need to bring you’re A game to class, that is where we do almost all the work. Homework is to
help us move forward in class.
I will continue to be understanding and fair and will help you in any way I can.
Trust that I am here to help you improve your Spanish and pass the exam and my philosophy continues
to be continue trying until you learn it. Those of you who know me know that is my philosophy for
grading as well so your GPA is safe as long as you do the work and improve.
This is your class, I am your facilitator and coach, Yoda with better hair, in achieving your Spanish goals. In
order to take this class, learn Spanish, get a good grade and pass the Spanish AP test you need to know the
following:









You don’t have to be perfect
You will have to take risks
You will have to be able to handle not knowing or understanding at times
You need to have a high frustration tolerance and persevere
The class will be all in Spanish
You will not fail or get a bad grade unless you don´t do the work.
It is about the learning of the language, a process
You will learn more than you think is possible…..
We will have a great year! Trust me this isn´t my first rodeo.
Why summer work? Again, this is your class, if you want to learn and continue improving, if you want to pass
the AP exam and save a boatload of cash then you need to work independently on you own. This class is not
about me, it is about you and your journey. You will not learn enough in class to pass or to pass well, you need
to listen to Spanish songs, TV, movies, read articles, and take the initiative. Your interest and motivation
combined with my wonderful curriculum and instruction will ensure your success and an A+. I will reward you
for all you do outside of class beyond what I require but your biggest reward will be passing the AP test! 
Summer work is designed to keep you practicing Spanish so you at least maintain if not improve where you are
now. This guide is a vehicle to get you to practice weekly. I tried to make it so people coming in at different
levels can find things that work for them and so that they don’t get too tedious. I have tried to make it as
customizable as possible in order to make it meaningful for you.
Summer work is not optional it is mandatory and it is worth a big part of your 1st quarter grade. THERE IS NO
POINT IN DOING THIS THE WEEK BEFORE. I designed it so that you are exposed to Spanish at least an hour a
week so you don’t get out of practice. Talk to me if you have problems with the assignments.
I set it up as a game so if you submit things by certain days you get more pesetas….aka. Coins.
I look forward to seeing you next fall. We will have a great time. Let me know if you have any issues I
will be checking email etc. regularly, at least 2ce a week. Have a happy, restful and safe summer.
Hugs,
Sra. Elke

Spanish group in Schoology. First come first served.



EXPECTATIONS:
DO A LITTLE EACH WEEK! …Or at least a little. All it takes is to turn on the tv, or listen to Spanish music.
You will cite your sources
I go by the honor code for some of these. Remember would only be cheating yourself. I’d rather you talk to me
about any issues and we can work something out.
All work will be your own
No translations. No exceptions. Use word reference as a dictionary.
Do you best work! Even if the assignment is only 3-5 sentences or 1 or 2. Capitalize, use accents, double check it,
write your best two sentences ever.
Written work can be typed in Schoology. Same rules apply, use proper punctuation and accents where possible. See
document on how to change your keyboard.
Written essays should have proper punctuation, written in your BEST handwriting, on nice lined paper without the
fuzzies on the side.
What you will need for AP SPANISH CLASS FOR SUMMER WORK and next year.
 A BIG folder or a Binder
 A notebook with four sections: 1 for Classwork exercises, 1 for your journal entries you will start using it
during summer, 1 for grammar notes, 1 for new vocabulary you will also start to use this during summer.
Internet access at least a couple of times during the summer.
So what do I have to do to play…
Welcome to the Spanish Matrix….
You are stuck there. In the ENGLISH MATRIX, to get out you have to collect 400 coins by the first week of school. When
you get out you will be in the realm of Sra. Elkeenespanol...
RELAX…That doesn’t mean the summer work is worth 400 points, coins in a video game. Each category or type of
Spanish activity gives you coins. Each type of assignment has coin values or a matrix of options with values. As you go
completing assignments you log them or x them out and collect coins to move towards your escape on the MATRIX
game board.
The instructions/requirements for the different assignments are under each section. The Matrix will help you keep track
of your coins. When you get to 400 coins you are free and you have won the SPANISH MATRIX. Unfortunately we have a
combination of Neo and Mario Bros in this game, they don’t have a Jose video game or Matrix movie …yet. So we’ll just
go with entering the magical world of Sra.Elkeenespanol.
When you turn in the Matrix Game board, it will let me know what to look for in Schoology etc. You can submit all
written work on Schoology or on paper. Your project needs to be uploaded to Schoology as well for the first week of
school
There is an extensive list of resources on the back cover. These are also in Schoology. Extra credit, vocabulary words,
and any additional Spanish activities can be tracked in the Just Log It page at the end of the packet as well.
You can complete the articles and summaries into Schoology, on paper or using the template provided.
The coin minimums for each level are as follows.
