¡BIENVENIDOS!
COURSE OVERVIEW:
Spanish 101 is a three-credit course designed for students with very little or no previous
knowledge of Spanish. We will focus on the four basic skills important to language learning:
listening, speaking, writing and reading. The course emphasizes mostly, however, oral
communication. While you learn the grammar and vocabulary central to this course you will be
constantly using and recycling it for the purpose of expressing yourself in Spanish. By the end
of the course you will be able to communicate many ideas in Spanish in grammatically correct,
complete sentences, as well as understand basic spoken Spanish in a variety of contexts.
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1.
2.
3.
4.
listen and understand basic information about themselves and others in the present.
read and understand basic information about themselves and others in the present.
inquire and provide orally basic information about themselves and others in the present.
inquire and provide in writing basic information about themselves and others in the
present.
5. identify select aspects of target culture.
REQUIRED COURSE MATERIALS:
1. Text: Dicho y Hecho, Beginning Spanish, 10/ed.
2. WileyPLUS (online component; included with the purchase of your textbook bundle)
MATERIAL TO BE COVERED:
Chapters 1-4 in your Textbook.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:
Most of the class will be taught in Spanish with some grammar concepts presented in English.
The bulk of class time will be spent using the grammar and vocabulary presented in class. This
will be accomplished by extensive oral and listening exercises, many of which will be paired or
group activities. In this course you are required to actively and voluntarily participate in all
class activities and exercises.
NOTE: Refusing to participate in class will result in your instructor asking you to leave
the classroom; additionally, you will be counted absent for that day.
CLASS PREPARATION:
You are expected to come to class having read and studied the grammar, the vocabulary,
and other material assigned for that day in the syllabus. Coming to class prepared is
paramount in a language class where class interaction and smooth flow of the lecture is highly
dependent on students being prepared to participate and to take maximum advantage of their inclass contact time. In addition, your participation in class will be the best way to prepare for
your oral exams.
To make the most of the lecture/class, make sure you are familiar with the grammar and
vocabulary to be covered in class each day. I suggest that you read the book explanations and try
to figure out how the grammar works. It is okay if you don’t quite understand everything; that’s
what I am here for, but trying to learn the material before class on your own will make class
explanations much easier to grasp. Additionally, for further practice and preparation, you need
access WileyPlus (www.willeyplus.com), which is the online component of your textbook, to
work on listening, grammar and vocabulary activities as well as cultural activities, videos, selftests, grammar tutorials, writing activities etc.
***The online activities in Willeyplus are designed as a complementary part to the whole
program. Relying only on the online activities to learn the material or to prepare for tests
will not be sufficient.
ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Attendance is mandatory to accomplish the objectives of this course. You are allowed to be
absent a total of 5 EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED class hours (not 5 classes) during the
semester without any penalty; these 5 hours of absences must be reserved or used for events such
as minor illnesses, doctor’s visits, court appearances, funerals, religious observances, family
responsibilities etc. If you are absent more than 5 class hours during the semester, even if you
have a valid, documented excuse, you will be asked by your instructor to drop the course;
if you do not drop the course you will not be allowed back into the class and you will receive an
“F” at the end of the course.
Note: In extenuating circumstances, exception to the rule above may be
considered if the student is able to present valid documentation and if s/he is in
good standing in the class (you have at least a B average, have not been late,
have not left class early etc.) I reserve the right to decide what a “valid
documentation” is and what “an extenuating circumstance” is. Nevertheless,
even if your excuse is accepted and you are allowed to continue in the class, I
will deduct 5% of your final grade for each additional hour of class you are
absent after reaching your 5-hour limit.
COMING TO CLASS LATE/LEAVING CLASS EARLY POLICY:
Coming to class late is disruptive and a sign of disrespect to your fellow classmates and the
instructor. Please make every effort to arrive to class on time.
You are allowed 4 opportunities to be late for class or to leave class early throughout the
semester without any penalty, but starting with your 5th tardiness/leaving early, I will
deduct 5% from your FINAL grade each time you are late or leave class early. I define
late/leaving early as not being in class at the exact scheduled time when class starts or ends; this
means that, even if you are late for a couple of minutes or you leave class before it ends, you will
be considered LATE/left early.
If on a day of a test you are late for class, you will not be allowed any extra time and you will
have to turn in your test when the rest of the students have finished taking the test. In addition, if
you are late during a test day and you miss the listening section of your test, this section will not
be repeated for you. If you are late for class, it is your responsibility to make sure you sign up in
the attendance sheet provided by your instructor. I will pass around an attendance sign-up sheet
at the beginning of each class; the sign-up sheet will be the only document accepted as proof of
being present or absent for class. If you are LATE OR ABSENT, you are responsible for all
material covered in class and for all other information missed including assignment changes
and/or syllabus changes. Please be aware that all announcements, changes in syllabus, etc.
are done at the very beginning of class.
***Very important note: To be counted as present in class you must attend a MINIMUM
of 1 hour and 20 minutes of class. In other words, if you are late more than 10 minutes,
you will be counted as a total absent. For example, if you come for the last hour of class,
you will be counted as absent for that day; or if you come for one hour of class to take a test
and then leave, you will be counted as absent for that day.
WITHDRAWAL POLICY: (Please check the College Calendar for the last date to
withdraw from class with a “W” grade).
To officially withdraw from a course you will need to complete the appropriate form and submit
it to the Office of Student Records and Registration. Failure to attend class is not an
official withdrawal, and the faculty member will not assign a “W” grade
unless the student has officially withdrawn from the class.
Note: Your instructor will not drop the course for you; you need to do the drop process
yourself. Failing to drop the course yourself will result in an “F” grade for this course.
CELL PHONE, BLUE TOOTH, I-PODS, HEADPHONES AND SIMILAR DEVICES
POLICY:
Cell phone use (and similar devices) is very disruptive to other students who take their education
seriously. Cell phone use, in any form, is strictly prohibited in this class. Your cell
phone must be turned off (not on vibration mode) and put away somewhere where it is not
visible to anyone. Cell phones cannot be on your desk even if they are off. If you are using
(checking, texting, playing with, etc.) your cell phone (or similar device) you will be asked to
leave the class immediately and you will be counted absent for that day. If you leave the
classroom to answer your phone, you will not be allowed to return to class and you will be
counted absent for that day. Please be aware that charging your phone during class is not
allowed. No headphones or Blue Tooth, of any type, are allowed to be used during class.
If you have an emergency on a specific day, you may be allowed to have your phone on
“vibrate”; please confirm with your instructor if you have a special circumstance. This
may be allowed on special circumstances only and not on a regular basis. Previous
permission of instructor is required.
Some electronic devices may be used for note-taking in class. Please check with your
instructor before using any electronic device in class.
CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY:
For inclement weather call the College or visit the College’s website main page. In the event that
the instructor should have to cancel class for reasons other than inclement weather, every effort
will be made to notify students via your CCP e-mail; also, an official “Cancellation of Class”
form will be posted outside the classroom. In the rare instance that your instructor is
running late for class, or if unsure if a class has been cancelled, students are required to
wait for the instructor a minimum of 15 minutes after the scheduled class time before
leaving the classroom.
COLLEGE POLICIES:
All College policies must be followed in and outside the classroom and are a binding part of
this syllabus. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook or visit
http://www.ccp.edu/site/current/conduct_code for complete information.
SERVICES FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:
The Center on Disability is responsible for ensuring that qualified students with disabilities are
provided with reasonable accommodations and services that enable them to have full access to
the College’s academic programs, services, activities and facilities. Students requesting to
receive special accommodations must visit the Center as soon as possible, but preferably within
the first week of class. If you need to request reasonable accommodations, but do not have an
accommodation form, please contact the Center on Disability, room BG-39, phone number 215751-8050.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AND PLAGIARISM:
Make sure all the work you turn in is your own. Academic dishonesty, including, but not limited
to plagiarism and cheating will result in a final course grade of “F”. Please refer to the Student
Handbook for complete information and procedures or visit:
http://www.ccp.edu/site/current/conduct_code
TEST MAKE-UP POLICY:
You may not make up tests, quizzes, or the final exam, but I will drop your
lowest chapter test grade; if you are absent on the day of a test, that test will
be dropped. The final exam cannot be dropped.
Note: In extenuating circumstances and only if you are a student in good
standing (you have a B average, no absences, have not been late, have not left
class early etc.) exception to the rule above may be considered if the student is
able to present valid documentation. I reserve the right to decide what a
“valid documentation” is.
TESTS AND EXAMS:
There will be four chapter tests during the semester. Tests will include all the material in your
textbook, in-class practice booklet, online activities and any other material covered during class.
All chapter tests will include: A listening section, a vocabulary section, a grammar section, a
writing section and a cultural section. You will also have one oral exam and one comprehensive
final exam. Check your calendar of classes for dates and specific details.
HOMEWORK/ WileyPlus Online Activities:
You will have online homework almost every day. All online homework has a due date
specified in the WileyPlus website. The computer will automatically deduct 50% of your
grade when you do not complete an activity on time. Check the WileyPlus website daily to
check for homework. Your instructor will not remind you that you have homework online.
GUIDELINES FOR THE ORAL EXAM:
You will have an oral exam on the day designated in the course calendar. I will give
you a list of questions (in Spanish) for you to prepare before the oral exam; from this
list, I will ask you a total of ten questions; you may not read your answers to me but
instead you must understand the questions and answer them in complete Spanish
sentences from memory. More instructions for your oral exam will be given as the
time approaches. You cannot make-up the oral exam.
GRADING:
I will use a percentage system to compute your grade. Your final grade will consist of the grades
earned from four chapter tests, oral exam, your final exam, WileyPlus online activities and any
other assignments the instructor may assign throughout the semester. Every test, oral exam, final
exam etc. will have a weighted percentage. Please read below to see what these percentages are.
If you are not sure about your progress in class, please consult with your instructor at any time.
In addition, you can always check your grade on MYCCP.
Please allow one week for your instructor to return any graded items.
***Very Important Note:
Make sure you save all of your graded items throughout
the semester for verification in case there is a discrepancy in your grade. Unless you can
prove otherwise with the graded items you have saved, my records will be the only accepted
document to assign your final grade.
Graded items will have the following percentage weight:
Written tests: 40%
Online Act.: 15%
Oral Exam:
10%
Final Exam
35%
Total
100%
GRADING SYSTEM:
A...........100-90 %
B............89-80%
C............79-70%
D...........69-60%
F............59 -0%
***Note: No extra-credit will be assigned or considered for grade.
ALL FINAL GRADES ARE BASED ON YOUR ACTUAL RESULST, NOT EFFORT!
CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE:
For a more productive learning environment, the classroom must remain a friendly and
welcoming place conducive to serious study. Non-pertinent interruptions and distractions disrupt
the learning process and should be avoided. Behavior that is disruptive or disrespectful to other
students or to the instructor has no place in a college setting. Students displaying such
behavior can expect to be asked to leave the class immediately. Any disruptive or/and
disrespectful behavior will be immediately dealt with by calling security and filing a report
with the Dean of Students. Coming to class late or leaving early is very disruptive to other
students and the instructor; if you need to leave class early, please consult with your instructor
before class. You may not leave the classroom while taking a test/quiz; (unless, of course, it’s an
emergency); doing so will result in you not being allowed to continue taking the test. Please
keep in mind that the classroom is a place to be attentive and respectful; students wishing to rest,
sleep, eat, chew gum, peruse (read, study) unrelated course material or leave before the professor
dismisses class (bathroom, errands etc.) will be asked to leave the classroom and will be counted
absent for that day.
Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct for complete information and procedures or
visit http://www.ccp.edu/site/current/conduct_code
NOTE: To maintain a favorable and non-disruptive learning environment, NO CHILDREN are
allowed in the classroom. Snacks, soda/water are fine to have in class. Cooked meals are not
allowed in class.

WEB-HELP:
There are several web sites that will help you in your new quest to learn and master a second
language. Use them often and your vocabulary, grammar and conjugation will improve.
1.
*** https://www.wileyplus.com – This web-site correlates with your textbook.
It contains grammar, vocabulary exercises, videos, self-tests etc. as well
as your online homeworkI strongly suggest you use this website
frequently.
Note: The online activities are designed as a complementary part for
the whole program. Relying only on the online activities to learn the
material or to prepare for tests will not be sufficient.
2.
http://www.languageguide.org/spanish/grammar/ --This website has lots of
vocabulary and grammar exercises. You can listen to the pronunciation
of words. Very easy to use.
3.
www.livemocha.com – This web-site is excellent if you want to learn Spanish at
your own pace. It gives you a great variety of listening, speaking, and
writing exercises in the target language.
4.
www.learnspanish.com -- This web-site is good for conjugating verbs and
working on grammar rules.
5.
https://conjuguemos.com/ --This web-site is good for conjugating especially
when you start learning more tenses to conjugate.
6.
http://www.colby.edu/~bknelson/SLC/index.php-- Great web-site to review the
grammar. Some exercises are self-correcting. You can listen to great
songs and fill in the blanks etc.
7.
http://mld.ursinus.edu/~jarana/Ejercicios/sitemap.htm-- User-friendly website; lots of activities etc. Go to their “Site Map” and choose the
grammar point you wish to review.
USEFUL HINTS TO SUCCEED IN THIS COURSE:
There is no way to learn a foreign language without effort, dedication, and spending enough time
studying and reviewing the material covered in class. Remember that you can absorb only so
much material at any one sitting; therefore, rather than trying to learn all the material before a
test, you will be better off spending small amounts of time each day; for example, try reviewing
the grammar and the vocabulary 10-20 minutes each night before going to sleep. For extra
review, work on the workbook that is at the end of your text book 20-30 minutes at a time,
making sure you check your answers using the answer key. If you don’t understand why an
answer is wrong, go back to your notes or textbook and try to figure out why your answer is
wrong. If you cannot figure it out yourself, put a question mark next to that particular exercise
and you can ask me (or someone else) later. I’m here to help you succeed in this course. Please
come see me in my office if you need extra help, or visit the tutoring center as soon as you
experience any difficulty.
Because class participation is very important when learning another language, if you decide to
take this course, you will be expected to participate voluntarily and extensively. I will call on
you several times during class and you are expected to be prepared to participate and get
involved in all class activities. Don’t be intimidated and don’t be discouraged if this is difficult
at the beginning. Similar to when you were a baby, you need to start babbling to learn how to
formulate the new sounds of your now second language. You will be most successful if you
participate often, and take advantage of every opportunity (inside and outside of class) to use the
language. It’s fine and expected to make mistakes while participating in class; remember that we
all learn from mistakes and the classroom is the best place to make mistakes when learning a
second language.
Follow these tips to successfully complete this course:

Always come to class having read and reviewed the material to be covered in class










that day.
Always do your workbook/lab manual carefully and check your answers.
Be prepared to actively participate in all class activities
Go over your old tests and re-do the sections that gave you most problems.
Study with someone whenever possible.
Try talking and thinking to yourself in Spanish.
Ask questions when you don’t understand; your instructor will answer them
cheerfully!
Use the websites suggested, or find different ones in the internet.
Don’t miss class.
Come see me for extra help before you fall too far behind.
Have a positive attitude and an open mind.
