7th Grade Reading - 2nd 6th 8th HOURS
This week’s objectives are to work on using context clues and working on
fluency and expression with oral reading.
We will work on the following standards:
7.RL.1 - Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what
the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
7.RL.2 - Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its
development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary
of the text.
7.RL.3 - Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g.,
how setting shapes the characters or plot).
7.RL.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in
a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the
impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a
specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama.
7.RL.6 - Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view
of different characters or narrators in a text.
I had planned to move to our new curriculum for the 2nd trimester.
However, I’d really like to squeeze in another chapter book before going
that route with the 7th grade.
We will read the book, Pay It Forward as a class. Students have been
broken into 4 groups per section and take turns reading. There will not be
any worksheets to support this book. We worked very thoroughly through
our last book, A Long Walk to Water.
Students will be assigned to select 3 vocabulary words per day that that
were unaware of prior. Together they’ll infer the definition & use them in 1
sentence for each word. They will together come up with a summary for
the day’s reading.
The following pages assigned daily are estimates. All students have
different reading paces when reading aloud. Students will read their
personal chosen amounts of paragraphs or pages, then the next person in
the group will continue. Though they are allowed to choose how much
they read aloud per turn, I ask they read a minimum of ½ of a page.
