19. The Texas Convention of 1836 drafted its own Declaration of

Independence, What was similar and different compared to the U.S.

Declaration that was drafted?

(Example:

The Bill of Rights was included in both drafts of the Texas

Declaration as well as the U.S. Declaration. This includes freedom of liberty, speech, and due process. The individual rights of man are included in both documents. Though the US Declaration grants equality, the Texas Declaration allowed for slavery to occur.)

(Students are meant to recognize the importance of the Texas

Declaration in comparison to the U.S Declaration. It is vital that students recognize that individual rights were given to white Anglo citizens of

Texas and the United States for that time period. Unfortunately African

Americans were given limited or no rights during the construction of both drafts. However, this changed.)
