15. How is instruction assigned to librarians?

Subject librarians usually teach courses in their areas. Some are assigned due to traditional

USF

FIU

UNF

FGCU relationship between faculty member and librarian. Others are made available on a firstcome, first-serve volunteer basis.

When liaison responsibilities don't dictate who will teach, the coordinators assign the sessions.

I coordinate sessions with available staff. While we only have 3 people directly assigned to instruction, technically any reference librarian is available to teach classes.

Sessions are assigned according to subject areas and availability.

FAU

NCF

By interest and strength within disciplines, and moderated by their teaching load and schedule.

We only have one librarian doing classroom instruction. Requests come from faculty inperson or via phone, e-mail or a web form.

By the instruction coordinator. Emphasis is given on subject librarians instructing classes related to their area. We desire to have at least one week advance notice from a professor.

However, when last minute requests come the instruction coordinator accepts and teaches these according to availability. Currently all graduate level and a majority of upper-level

FAMU

UWF courses are only taught by the coordinator or the coordinator's supervisor. Therefore, the coordinator currently instructs a larger percentage of overall classes.

Generally, faculty contacts the librarian liaison to their department and schedule the sessions directly. The Instruction Coordinator schedules the sessions at times and handles most of orientation classes, dividing them out when necessary.

Some teach mostly ENC1101/1102, which others teach mostly classes that fall within their collection development areas, and some teach a little of both. Each librarian has a percentage for LI in their Assignment of Responsibilities each year.

19. Do you have instruction services designed specifically for distance learners? If so, briefly describe.

USF

FIU

We have a LibGuide for distance learners. We work closely with the campus unit for distance learning. A librarian is embedded in the Blackboard community for distance learners. Once a year, we offer (and record) an online help session for distance learners.

Yes, we have a Business Class library session on video. The tutorials are also geared to distance learners.

We don't have distance learners. We do have students who are on the Exchange Program and often do individual sessions with them via e-mail.

We developed a brief survey for English comp classes. Some librarians are working on a survey for upper level classes.

SLS student assessment: it's a university approved and sponsored survey. All ENC 1102 students are also undergoing a similar survey at this time. Results will be used to improve instruction.

We implement a short 3-4 question pre & post for every class taught during the semester.

These questions are designed based upon the ACRL standards, performance indicators, and outcomes. We began implementing the pre & post assessment at the beginning of this academic year, fall 2009. In addition to this pre & post we also collect a 'survey' (smile sheet) from each student and faculty member in order to determine if the student and faculty member felt the session was beneficial and so forth.

34. What are your two biggest challenges to carrying out library instruction/information literacy at your campus?

USF

1. Designing program assessment strategies.

2. Not enough staff to offer face-to-face instruction for all who want it.

FIU

UNF

FGCU

FAU

NCF

FAMU

UWF

1. Having enough librarians to meet the demand.

2. Having the time and expertise to create engaging, interactive online tutorials.

1. Adequate staffing

2. Adequate funding.

1. Cooperation of teaching faculty.

2. Students do not feel they need library sessions --they feel they can find what they need via Google or the Internet.

1. Librarians have to make best use of the limited time they have w/ students.

2. Becoming embedded in classes to work with students and professors over the course of a semester.

The fact that we only have one person doing instruction. We are starting from scratch in terms of getting an information literacy program set up. Once we have more librarians participating in instruction planning should be a priority.

1. Adequate Staffing

2. Marketing

1. Not having a strategic plan in place - I am working to create an Information Literacy

Committee with librarians and faculty

2. Lack of library staffing

UCF

USF-

1. One-shot sessions

1.

Lack of time as solo librarian

2. Lack of 1st year experience program (no freshmen on this campus until 2011-2012)

35. What are your two greatest assets in carrying out your program?

USF

1. Good cooperation with other campus units (First-Year Composition, Center for 21st

Century Teaching Excellence, Distance Learning, etc.).

2. Availability of technology for instructional purposes.

FIU

UNF

1. Staff Enthusiasm & Commitment

2. Two instruction classrooms equipped with computers.
