The Age of Napoleon
Why this is important: Napoleon brought the ideas of the French Revolution to much of Europe. He is responsible for
finalizing the creation of the French Nation state as well as helping to begin the unification of Germany. Napoleon’s
code, a system of laws, is still the basis of law in many European nations today. Militarily, Napoleon changed the way
wars were fought. Many of his ideas were innovative and helped shape our views on both the purpose of war and how
it should be fought. In addition, reactions to Napoleon’s reign set the stage for further revolutions throughout Europe.
