STEAM 8/10/2015 Page 1 Engineering: How have I solved a problem or fulfilled a need by designing or building? Check Total Points Engineering Rubric 1 1. Students include a claim that answers the question (How have I solved a problem or fulfilled a need by designing or building?). 1 2. Students state what they created for evidence, and describe what they have uploaded. 1 3. Students explain how the learning was different. Give an example of what you designed or built in the past and how your new learning is different. 1 4. Students explain how the learning was more complex (complicated/in-depth). Give specific details of the factors that made it more complex (complicated/in-depth) than what you have designed or built in previous semesters. List a minimum of 3 specific details. 1 5. Students explain how the evidence supports or connects to their claim. 1 6. Students take the readers step by step through the process of creating their evidence. (three sentence minimum) 1 7. Students use reasoning to tell how what they have learned about designing or building can be used in their lives now. 1 8. Students use reasoning to tell how they can use what they have learned about designing or building might be used in a future career. 1 9. Every sentence begins with a capital letter and uses standard punctuation. All proper nouns are capitalized. The personal pronoun I is always capitalized. 1 10. There are no more than three basic errors in the paragraph. The paper is written in complete sentences that use correct spelling, punctuation, grammar usage, and capitalization. 1 11. Paragraph document is uploaded and typed in 11 or 12 point Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman. 1 12. First and last name is in the upper left hand corner. 1 13. Project is uploaded and serves as evidence of the claim. 13 You must achieve a score of 100% on this paragraph. After you get 100% on your paragraph, you must upload it as a Google Document to Turnitin. STEAM 8/10/2015 Page 2 Engineering Paragraph Prompts and Sentence Template These sentence prompts are provided to help you express your thoughts if you get stuck. The numbers coincide with the rubric item numbers. 1. I (choose one) designed or built ______ to (choose one) solve the problem of _____ or fulfill the needs of _____ . 2. The evidence that I have uploaded is _____. (Describe the evidence. What does it look like? What is it made out of? What is it used for?) 3. What I can now do is different because in the past I __________. (Discuss what you have designed or built in the past.) With my new learning, I can now __________. (State what you can now design or build.) 4. This is more complex (complicated/in-depth) because instead of just being able to___________________, as I did in the past, I can now design/build (choose one) __________________ (Give specific details of the factors that made it more complex (complicated/indepth) than what you have done in previous semesters. List a minimum of 3 specific details that increased the complexity of this project. 5. This evidence supports my claim that I designed/built this project by _______ (State what you did.) 6. This is what I did to design/build (choose one): _____. (What did you try to accomplish? Take the readers step-by-step through what you did to design or build your evidence. If your readers tried to design or build what you did, what would they have to do?) 7. I can now use this ability to __________ (Explain how you could use what you have learned in your daily life or in one of your classes.) 8. In a future career I might be able to use _____ (Explain how someone might be able to use what you have learned about designing or building on a job.) Example: I designed a PowerPoint to fulfill the need of the FFA to recruit more members. The evidence that I uploaded is the PowerPoint. It consists of three slides that can be uploaded to the big screens in the main hall. Each slide gives a different reason to join FFA with a picture of one of our activities. What I can now do is different because in the past I had never taken pictures and inserted them into a PowerPoint. Everything that I used came off of the Internet. With my new learning, I can now take pictures and put them on any PowerPoint for any class or organization. This is more complex (complicated/in-depth) because instead of just having to use pictures that others had taken, as I did in the past, I can now use an Ipod to take a picture, email it to myself, and place it in a presentation. I even know how to enlarge it. This evidence supports my claim that I designed this project to fulfill a need to get more people to join FFA. This is what I did to design it: I wanted people to know that FFA was a lot of fun, so early in the year, I began taking pictures of our activities. Then, I sorted them to find the ones that made the activities look as fun as they are. Next, I created a PowerPoint presentation that asked people to join and said what the activity was. Finally, I emailed the pictures to myself and then inserted them into the PowerPoint. Finally, I asked Mrs. Stoddard to play the slides on the day of our membership drive. I can now use this ability to take and insert pictures for a PowerPoint on any subject and for any class. In a future career I might be able to use this to create a presentation to show an idea to my boss or maybe even congratulate the employee of the month!
