College & Career Information World Expeditions 2015 East Coast College Tour for Juniors – World Expeditions of San Diego will be presenting information about the 2015 East Coast College Tour on Monday, September 29th. The tour cost will include airfare, ground transportation, breakfast and dinner (some colleges will include lunch during the tour) a customized tour handbook with college information and space for notes, a ticket to a Broadway show, security and chaperones, and travel insurance. Apprenticeship, Career College, Technical School or Vocational Training – If you are not planning on attending a traditional college right out of high school, consider focusing on career with a specialty college or school. Apprenticeship – Cal Apprenticeship has information on California Apprenticeship programs. Career College or Technical Schools – check out the US Department of Education’s website for information on choosing the best school for your career goals. Vocational Training – Conejo Valley Adult Education, Simi Valley Adult Education, Ventura Adult and Continuing Education,or North Valley Occupational Center. Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura Colleges also have career or vocational programs available in Autobody, Biotechnology, Business, Child Development, Computer Technology, Nursing, Welding and more. *NEW* Writing the UC Personal Statement – UCSB Admissions Rep and Jacob Kantor of C2 Education will present an workshop on writing the UC Personal Statement for college applications. ACT/SAT/PSAT Test Schedule for 2014/15 The ACT and SAT tests are scheduled by the respective boards and not by CVUSD or TOHS. Students must register and pay for the tests online, not at TOHS. Please review the test schedules to best determine which test you should register for. Be aware of deadlines! Both ACT and SAT will charge extra for late registration. ACT Test Schedule SAT Test Schedule SAT Subject Test Schedule UPDATED PSAT Test – The PSAT test is the only College Board test administered by TOHS. This test is scheduled for Saturday, October 18th. Freshman and Sophomore Honors students and all Juniors are highly encouraged to take the PSAT. It is a valuable tool for students to get feedback about critical academic skills that they have learned during their school career. And it helps prepare them for the SAT as, on average, students who take the PSAT score 136 points higher on the SAT than those who do not test. This is an important opportunity for Juniors as those with outstanding scores may be eligible for college scholarships as Seniors. It is also a full length practice test that will indicate areas that students need to study prior to taking the SAT. Registration is now open and the cost of the test is $25. You may sign-up online with a credit card at the TOHS Student Store, or in person at the CCC or Student store. Please note that the Student Store and CCC will only accept checks made payable to CVUSD or cash. ACT/SAT Test Preparation TOHS is partnering with The Princeton Review to provide an on campus SAT or ACT test prep class. Each class will include 18 hours of instruction time after school on campus, beginning mid-September and 3 practice diagnostic tests. Flyers are available in the CCC and the Activities office. UPDATE: Kaplan Test Prep will be conducting a mock ACT and mock SAT test on Saturday, September 20th. This will be a great way to prepare for the upcoming official tests. The tests will take place in the Lancer Library. The $20 cost is a fundraisers for the TOHS PTSA Scholarship Fund. As the CCC will be closed September 17th-19th, students may sign up in the Activities office. Cash or check (made out to TOHS PTSA) will be accepted to confirm a seat at the test. *NEW* Kaplan Test Prep has created a personal TOHS website for information regarding classes, tutoring, opportunities at TOHS and tips for testing. Check it out! Kaplan Test Prep explains the changes in the 2016 SAT test. College Board Announcements Free SAT practice and video tutorials through Khan Academy. Enhanced Fee-waiver Services – Registration with a fee waiver is now allowed through the late registration period. Fee-waiver users will receive college application fee-waiver forms directly from the College Board. 3. How to Navigate from High School to College Figuring out what college to go to, how to get there and planning out the road map to the perfect school and career is not a quick or easy process. Check out www.collegeappmap.org. The College App Map website, funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, shows you step by step how to plan for college beginning freshman year. But what if you’re a sophomore, junior or senior? It’s still not too late. You CAN get to college! Also, check out www.roadtripnation.com. This is a fun website for a public television show that has been called “inspiring.” The show travels the US, listening to the life stories of famous and everyday people, how they got to where they are now. It can help students discover what career path they want to follow. You can also check out http://colleges.niche.com/, a student recommended website to research what real students and parents are saying about colleges. Find out where stude nts ranks colleges in academics, athletics, campus dining, housing, drug safety, transportation, weather and much more. The Sacramento Bee published this article on choosing colleges. Personal Finance : When Choosing Colleges, How to Calculate the Money Factor. Gap Year opportunities are another way students investigate what they want to do in life. Students with the Entrepreneurial spirit might want to investigate the Un-College program. Students can network and experience a year of self-discover, while developing their own curriculum. The program is broken up into four 3-month sessions that include internships, travel abroad, living in a Gap Year house and completing a creative project. Visit Gap Year to find out more. 4. Scholarships Scholarship Season begins early! There are currently 3 scholarships listed in Naviance and some deadlines as early as the end of September. Scholarship information is available on Naviance. Search for scholarships and applications on the Scholarship List link under the Colleges tab. *NEW* The Prudential Spirit of Community Award 2015 program is looking for students who have volunteered at least 50 hours over the past year. Last year, TOHS nominated three students to the state level and all were awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award and one student additionally won a Certificate of Excellence. State winners will be awarded an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. If you have volunteered in the community, please The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards to complete an application. Be sure to print a copy of the application and turn it in to the CCC to be eligible for local recognition and submission to the state level! *NEW* The Quest Bridge 2014 National College Match Program is now accepting applications for academically talented seniors who have excelled in school despite the challenges they have faced. WACE Advancing Cooperative & Work-Integrated Education – 13th Annual National Co-op Scholarship Program – deadline February 15th, 2015 2014 Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards – Latino Seniors (graduating in 2015) may apply to the Youth Awards program presented by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation. The Teen Council participates in community events, engages in activities to create better transportation services, and interact with community leaders. Students will need a letter of recommendation from an adult in a leadership role and an application. Applications are available in the CCC. *NEW* The New West Symphony’s Music Van Booth needs students to volunteer for 3 hour shifts during the Thousand Oaks Arts Festival at the Civic Arts Plaza. You will be helping children and adults try out musical instruments. No musical experience is necessary! The festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, September 10th & 21st. They are currently looking for Seniors to help with the programs. The positions would be for 2 hours an afternoon for either 4 to 5 days a week and would be paid at $11 to $14 per hour.
