OVERVIEW
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Who is God?
 God the Father was once a man,
but “progressed” to godhood
“As man now is, God once was;
as God now is, man may be”
Lorenzo Snow
5th President of the LDS Church
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Who is God?
 God the Father was once a man,
but “progressed” to godhood
 God the Father has a physical
body, as does his wife
(Heavenly Mother)
 No Trinity- Father, Son, and Holy
Ghost are 3 separate gods
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Who is Jesus?
 Jesus was created as a spirit
child by Heavenly Father and
Mother, and is the elder
brother of all humanity
 His earthly body was created
through sexual union between
Heavenly Father and Mary
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Who is Jesus?
 He was married and had several
children
 His death on the cross does not
provide salvation from all sin,
but does provide resurrection
to everyone
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Who is the Holy Spirit?
 Holy spirit is not Holy Ghost
 The holy spirit is not God, but an
electricity-like emanation from
God
 The Holy Ghost is another God
(Father, Son and H.G. are 3
separate Gods)
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
How does a person get saved?
 People are resurrected because
of the resurrection of Christ, but
saved (exalted to godhood
and eternal life) by their good
deeds
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
… for we know that it is by grace
that we are saved, after all we can
do.
2 Nephi 25:23
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
How does a person get saved?
 People are resurrected because
of the resurrection of Christ, but
saved (exalted to godhood
and eternal life) by their good
deeds
 No celestial life without church
membership
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
What happens after death?
 Eventually, nearly everyone
goes to one of three heavenly
kingdoms, with some
individuals achieving godhood
 Apostates and murderers go to
“outer darkness”
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
The Mormon afterlife
Heavenly Kingdoms “Outer Darkness”

MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Terrestrial Kingdom
 Inhabited by non-Mormons who
lived moral lives and Mormons
who did not live up to the LDS
church’s requirements (“less
than valiant”)
 Visited by Jesus Christ but not
Heavenly Father
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Telestial Kingdom
 Inhabited by immoral nonMormons (“the dishonest, liars,
sorcerers, adulterers, and
whoremongers”)
MORMONISM

Telestial Kingdom
 They must suffer for their own sins
in hell until after the Millennium,
then resurrected to the Telestial
Kingdom to be visited by the

MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
The “Outer Darkness”
 Inhabited by Satan, demonic
spirits, and “apostates” (those
who know the truth and then
reject it)
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
The “Outer Darkness”
 Since there is no forgiveness for
apostates, they will “live in
eternal darkness, torment and

THE ISSUE OF POLYGAMY
The Bible and the Book of Mormon teach that marriage is
of one man and one woman.
In 1840 Joseph Smith Jr. gave word from the Lord that
plural marriage was approved by God. He died 4 years later.
Five men claimed to be Smith’s successor. Brigham Young
held onto the majority and moved them to Utah and taught
polygamy was God’s plan.
Edmunds Act of 1882 and Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1887
In 1890 prophet Wilford Woodruff ended plural marriage
allowance by LDS.
Fundamentalist groups broke off defending polygamy.

MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
“I have more to boast of than ever
any man had. I am the only man
that has ever been able to keep a
whole church together since the
days of Adam. A large majority of
the whole have stood by me.
Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus
ever did it.”
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
“I boast that no man ever did such
a work as I. The followers of Jesus
ran away from Him; but the Latterday Saints never ran away from
me yet.”
Joseph Smith
History of the Church
vol. 6, p. 408-409
MORMONISM

Biblical test for a true prophet:
Deuteronomy 18:15-22
Matthew 7:15-16
Galatians 1:6-9
2 Peter 2:1-3
1 John 4:1-3
Jude 3-16
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Was Joseph Smith a true prophet?
1. In 1835, Joseph Smith
prophesized, “the coming of the
Lord, which was nigh…even fifty-six
years should wind up the scene.”
1835 + 56 = 1891… it’s 2014 and
the Lord has not yet returned
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Was Joseph Smith a true prophet?
2. On 4/17/1838, Joseph Smith
prophesized, “thus says the Lord: it is
wisdom in my servant David W.
Patten… that he may perform a
mission unto me next spring.”
David W. Patten died October, 1838
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Was Joseph Smith a true prophet?
3. On 5/13/1843, Joseph Smith
prophesized, “unless the U.S. redress
the wrongs committed upon the
Saints in Missouri, in a few years the
government will be overthrown.”
The U.S. government still exists
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Was Joseph Smith a true prophet?
4. In D & C, section 111, Joseph
Smith states he was given a
revelation from God in which
treasure for the Mormons was
located in Salem, Massachusetts.
No treasure ever discovered
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Was Joseph Smith a true prophet?
5. In D & C, section 84, Joseph Smith
states he was given a revelation
from God in which a temple was to
be built in Independence, Missouri,
and the present generation would
not pass away until the temple was
built.
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Was Joseph Smith a true prophet?
No temple has ever been built in
Independence, Missouri. Considering
they have 141 world wide and 2 in
Missouri, the fact they have had a
temple lot in Independence dedicated
since 1831 that is still empty is a fail.

Tactics in conversing with and
evangelizing members of the LDS
church
 Using the BOM
 Using the Scriptures
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
Using the BOM
1. Changes in the BOM
2. Plagiarism in the BOM
3. Biblical teachings found in the
BOM that contradict present-day
Mormon beliefs
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
1. Since its original publication in
1830, the BOM has undergone over
4,000 changes- many of which
include major doctrinal changes.
Verse
1830 Version
1 Nephi “And the angel
11:21 said unto me,
Behold the Lamb
of God, yea, even
the eternal Father”
Today’s Version
“And the angel
said unto me,
Behold the Lamb
of God, yea, even
the son of the
eternal Father”
Verse
1830 Version
Mosiah “King Benjamin

Verse
1830 Version
2 Nephi “And the mean

Today’s Version
“And the mean
man boweth not

not”
Verse
1830 Version
1 Nephi “O house of

waters of Judah,
which swear by
the name of the
Lord“
Today’s Version
“O house of
Jacob, which are
called out of the
waters of Judah,
or out of the
waters of baptism,
which swear by
the name of the
Lord"
Verse
1830 Version
2 Nephi “and many
30:6
generations shall
not pass away
among them,
save they shall be
a white and
delightsome
people”
Today’s Version
“and many
generations shall
not pass away
among them,
save they shall be
a pure and
delightsome
people”
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
2. The BOM contains over 27,000
words taken directly out of the King
James Version of the Bible,
including whole chapters lifted out
of Isaiah (even the italicized words
were copied).
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
2. If the BOM contains events that
took place between 600 B.C. and
421 A.D., how could it contain
extensive quotations from a version
of the Bible that was not penned
until 1611 A.D.?
MORMONISM
(Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
3. Several teachings found in the
BOM are not followed in presentday Mormonism, but are very
similar to doctrines found within the
Scriptures.
Doctrine
BOM reference
Only one God
2 Nephi 31:21; Mosiah 15:15; Alma 11:28-29
