On the way to the hospital, Dally tells Ponyboy, “I was crazy, you know that kid? Crazy for wantin’
Johnny to stay outa trouble, for not wantin’ him to get hard. If he’d been smart like me he’d never been in this
mess. If he’d got smart like me he’s never have run into that church. That’s what you get for helpin’ people.
Editorials in the paper and a lot of trouble…. You’d better wise up, Pony… you get tough like me and you don’t
get hurt. You look out for yourself and nothin’ can touch you…” (pg 147).
Do you think Dally is really as tough as he seems? Explain.

WRITING TEST #4
In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders Ponyboy and Cherry have a conversation about watching sunsets.
Ponyboy thinks to himself, “It seemed funny to m that the sunset she saw from her patio and the one I saw
from the back steps was the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived in weren’t so different. We
saw the same sunset” (pg 40-41).
Describe what the author is saying LITERALLY about sunsets and what she is implying FIGURATIVELY.
Remember, the literal meaning is what the words or phrases really mean. The figurative meaning is how it can
be interpreted by others.
Brainstorm below then write your answer on a separate sheet of paper. Remember, your paragraph
should include an opening and a closing. Your answer must be one paragraph or more.
