Anglo-Dutch Wars
Series of four military conflicts between the English and Dutch
occurring in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The first
three stemmed from commercial rivalry; the fourth from Dutch
interference in the American Revolution.
The French came to the aid of the Dutch during the second conflict
in 1666, but then later allied with England after the Treaty of Dover in
1670. This was during the War of Spanish Succession when Louis XIV
invaded the Netherlands. This (third) conflict ended with the Treaty of
Nijmegen with the French withdrawing from Spanish Netherlands.
