Roald Dahl Centenary Expression of Interest July - September 2016 “We have so much time and so little to do. Strike that, reverse it” - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Gremlin Gus Nightmare at 20,000 Feet Russian Rhapsody Falling Hare Background Dahl was born in Llandaff, Cardiff on 13th September 1916. As a tribute to this marvellous storyteller there will be celebrations in schools, arts venues and communities throughout the year culminating on Roald Dahl Day on 13th September. We would like to invite film folks of all shapes and sizes to participate in this celebration. The timing of the season will allow venues to join together over the summer to bring a great family friendly alternative to those big blockbusters which smother the nation’s billboards. “A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men” - Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator We also shouldn’t forget those darker tales of the unexpected which confused and beguiled us when we really should have been in bed. It could also be fun to extend the season to include other talents such as Neil Gaiman, Tim Burton, The League of Gentlemen boys, Dr Seuss, upcoming writers and directors and all those others who remind us what it’s like to be a child. “Somewhere inside all of us is the power to change the world.” - Matilda The Programme “Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it’s unbelievable...” - Matilda Key Programme Points in the year: 22nd July: The BFG: (Steven Spielberg) Entertainment One films 13th September: Roald Dahl Day, nationwide Strategic partners Into Film Cinema For All Literature Wales www.literaturewales.org Obvious Regional UK Tie-Ins SWWM: Midsomer Norton, Somerset, Weston Super-Mare, St Peter’s boarding school, Central East: Cambridge, Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire – family home and Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre www.roalddahl.com, North West Central Repton School in Derbyshire, from 1929 (where Cadbury would send chocolates to be tested by the boys), London: Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery at the Buckinghamshire County Museum, Aylesbury.
