Joel Corry, NFP: The Cincinnati Bengals continued their trend of being proactive with core
players entering the final year of rookie contracts by signing All-Pro linebacker Vontaze Burfict
to a three-year, $18.43 million contract extension (total of $19 million for four years)… the only
guaranteed money in Burfict’s contract is a $3.1 million signing bonus and a $3.8 million roster
bonus payable within a few days of signing. In addition to the $6.9 million, Burfict’s 2014 base
salary is $700,000… Burfict also has a $2.15 million roster bonus payable on the fifth day of the
2015 league year, which is intended to serve as a substitute for additional contact guarantees.
Burfict’s base salaries in 2015, 2016 and 2017 are $1.05 million, $3.35 million and $4.25 million.
There are $200,000 workout bonuses in each of the extension years (2015-2017). The deal has a
salary escalator where Burfict’s base salary in each remaining contract year increases by
$135,000 with a Pro Bowl selection… His 2014 salary cap number goes from his $570,334 to

Kevin Kelly, Cincy Enquirer: Clemons, released by Kansas City in late February, signed a two-year
contract worth nearly $2.18 million… His contract includes a $622,500 signing bonus and pays
him a base salary of $655,000 this season and $900,000 in 2004. Those salary figures could rise
if Clemons, who turns 29 later this month, reaches certain performance-based incentives.
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: the Cincinnati Bengals have signed defensive end Duane Clemons to a
two-year contract extension through 2006, ESPN.com has learned. The eight-year veteran, who
last spring signed a two-year, $2.18 million contract, will earn $3.7 million in so-called "new
money" as a result of the extension… Clemons, 30, received a signing bonus of $1.3 million. Base
salaries in the contract will be $700,000 (2004), $1.25 million (2005) and $1.35 million (2006).
There is an incentive of $100,000 for any season in which Clemons registers eight sacks. If he
gets eight sacks and plays 70 percent of the snaps, another $100,000 rolls over into base salary
for the following season.

six years… Dalton receives a signing bonus of $12 million and a roster bonus in three days of $5
million. That’s a total of $17 million out of the gates. Coupled with his $986,000 base salary
(which isn’t guaranteed as a legal matter but it is as a practical matter), Dalton will make $18
million in the first year of the deal. Then, on the third day of the 2015 league year in March,
Dalton earns a $4 million roster bonus. He also has a $3 million non-guaranteed base salary in
2015. That’s $25 million over two years… The rest of the base deal is simple. In addition to
annual workout bonuses of $200,000, Dalton has base salaries of $10.5 million in 2016, $13.1
million in 2017, $13.7 million in 2018, $16 million in 2019, and $17.5 million in 2020…
If in any year he participates in 80-percent of the regular-season snaps and the Bengals get to
the divisional round of the playoffs (via wild-card win or bye), he gets another $1 million in each
additional year of the deal. If he qualifies at any point for the conference title game (with 80percent playing time in the regular season), another $500,000 flows into the base value of the
deal, for each additional year. If he wins a Super Bowl he won’t be driving off in a Hyundai;
Dalton will get another $1.5 million per year for each remaining year of the deal. So if the
Bengals win the next Super Bowl this year and if Dalton participates in 80 percent of the regularseason snaps in 2014, he’ll get another $18 million over the life of the deal, pushing the newmoney average from $16 million per year to $19 million.

million roster bonus in 22 months. The contract will turn into a six-year deal if he's in for 35
percent of the plays in any season… Palmer can make roughly $40 million in bonuses and base
salary over six years, with escalators that could take it to $49 million. He'll get $18.25 million in
the first three years through bonuses and salary.
Joe Kay, AP: They added six years to a deal that still had three to go, providing Palmer with a
chance to make $118.75 million in salary and bonuses over the next nine years… Under the
reworked deal, Palmer will get a $15 million bonus -- paid on Feb. 16 -- and a base salary of
$6.75 million next season. The Bengals owe him a $9 million option by Jan. 1, 2007 -- they'll have
the option of letting the rest of the deal take effect or nullifying it at that time, but have to pay
the same amount either way. His base salaries will increase during the deal, topping out at $14
million in 2014. He'll also get $1 million roster bonuses for each of his last three seasons,
bringing the total amount of the reworked, nine-year deal to $118.75 million.

money." His signing bonus was $4.2 million, he gets a roster bonus of $800,000, and his base
salary for 2002 is $1 million. So the former first-round pick will make a tidy $6 million this

Joe Reedy, Cincinnati Enquirer: It is a four-year deal worth $26 million with $21 million
guaranteed. The Bengals have an option after the 2010 season that would push the deal $42
million over six years with the maximum worth $50 million.
Mike Florio, PFT: the contract contains a provision that slashes in half Smith's pay for each game
in which he weighs in at 350 pounds or higher -- and in which he is not on the active 45-man
roster. (So, basically, if he weighs 350 or more and plays, he gets the money.) It's technically a
de-escalator of his base salary, a device that is permissible as long as Smith's salary exceeds the
league minimum for his specific level of experience.
Mike Florio, PFT: Under the deal, the Bengals must decide after two seasons whether to invoke
the option for years five and six, by paying a $4.75 million option bonus. If they do, easily
reachable playing-time triggers make the contract into a six-year, $42 million deal, with a lot of
the money coming early in the life of the contract.
Indeed, despite the total-dollar similarities to Gholston's contract, Smith will pocket nearly 20
percent more than Gholston over the first three years (if the option is exercised) and 13.5
percent more than Gholston over four (again, if the option is exercised).
