CELL PHONE USAGE
The staff at Char-Lan are asking that parents resist
phoning or texting their children during class
time as it is disruptive to not just your child’s
education but to those students who sit around
them. If there is an emergency, please call the
office and we will have your child brought out of
class to speak with you or we will deliver your
message to them.
Fitness Room
Do you want to get fit? The Char-Lan fitness and
weight training room is now open from Monday to
Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. for all interested
students. Free weights, squat racks, chinup/pullup
bars and many other fitness equipment is available.
The fitness room will be supervised daily by Mr.
DiStefano. Beginners and more experienced
students are welcome to give it a try. It's a great
way to start your morning!
Crusader Hockey News
Health & Wellness
Boys and girls hockey tryouts are now complete.
The boys played in a tournament at the Sensplex
on November 23rd and 24th bringing home a Bronze
Medal. The girls have a tournament in Kingston on
December 15th and 16th and both teams start their
regular seasons the week of December 7th. Good
luck both teams.
Monday, November 23rd, Dr. Darcy Santor held two
workshops at Char-Lan. Grades 9 & 10 students
attended ‘Sticking to the Facts’ – teaching students
how to turn the channel when they become
overwhelmed by negative thoughts.
Homework Club
Char-Lan homework club is now open in the
Learning Commons. The homework club will be
open to all grades. The club will be open after
school daily from 3:30 -4:10 p.m. The space is
available for those students who would like to
complete their work in a quiet environment or for
those students who need some assistance or
supervision in order to complete their work.
Grad Photos
Grade 12 graduation photos are taking place all day
Monday, December 7th and the afternoon of
Tuesday, December 8th. Grade 8 graduation photos
will take place in the morning on Tuesday,
December 8th. Retakes are scheduled for Monday,
January 11th.
Crazy for You
Students from Mr. Goodbun’s music class and Mrs.
Charpentier’s drama class travelled to the
Brockville Arts Centre for the performance of
“Suessical” on Thursday, December 3rd, 2015.
Grade 7 & 8 Core
We Can't Beat It!!
Mrs. Danaher's Grade 7 and 8 Core classes have
been going to the kitchen to bake wonderful
creations. We are turning into awesome
chefs. However, our electric mixers are tired and
don't work as well as they used to. If you have any
gently used electric mixers to donate, we would
greatly appreciate it.
Art Club
Art Club is running every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m.
to 5:00 p.m. Come on out and exercise your
creative muscles!
Grade 11 & 12 students heard Dr. Santor speak on
‘Making the Grade’ – how to be successful in high
school. He gave students strategies. He stressed
the importance of attendance, scheduling in
homework & test dates, creating a daily to-do list,
taking handwritten notes over typed written notes.
The need to student and review notes well in
advance of a test – cramming the night before
creates a negative result – a good night sleep is
better than cramming. Asking for help early and
asking questions – participating in class is a must.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Fundraiser
As a Student Council/Phys. Ed fundraiser this year
we are selling tickets for Canadiens Hockey Tickets,
a taylormade golf club, Ramada New Year's Tickets
plus a night's stay and a Glengarry Fine Cheese
cheese basket. Tickets are on sale until December
11, 2015 and are $5 each or 3/$10. Thank you to
all our local donors.
St. Andrews Day
St. Andrew's Day was celebrated again this year, at
Char-Lan, on November 26th. Students competed
first by showing off their plaid. Mrs. Charpentier's
grade 11 Chemistry class was the winner with
numerous students in kilts. Second period of the
day was jammed packed with talent. Our school
concert featured dancers, fiddlers, singers and
musicians. So much talent in one school!! The real
games began after lunch with tug o' war and
pitching a welly. Great student
participation! Finally, the day ended with a fun
two-stepping dance. Thanks to Neil Emberg and
Richard Irwin for their show. You inspired many
non-Scots to give it a try on the dance
floor. Everyone at Char-Lan was Scottish for the
day.
Learning Commons
Virtual Learning

For information, database passwords, etc. contact
Carolyn Goddard, LCI Char-Lan Family of Schools.
What’s New at the Char-Lan Learning Commons?
The Learning Commons at Char-Lan is becoming a
central place for students to enjoy a quiet moment,
exchange ideas or maybe challenge a friend to a
chess match. Students and staff are seen working
on a computer, finishing an assignment or perhaps
reading a magazine while interacting with friends.
On November 19 a successful coffee house was
held in the Learning Commons. While the audience
enjoyed refreshments, student performers recited
poetry or played musical selections on the keyboard
or guitar. The Learning Commons will continue to a
place where everyone is welcome to come in and
enjoy the space.
Student Council – Grade 7 & 8
The grade 7&8 student council will be having their
Christmas Dance on December 16th. The cost of
admission is $2 and snacks/drinks will be sold for
$1.00 each. Don’t forget to wear red and green!

Attendance, Punctuality and
Safe Arrival
Students must attend school daily in order to have
the best chance at being successful. Parents or
guardians, if your child is going to be absent
from school or late, please contact the office
and advise the Attendance Secretary by 9:20
a.m. If we have not heard from a parent or
guardian, we will contact the home of any student
who is not in school when the attendance is taken
for those students in grade 7 & 8. If a student is
going to be absent for more than a day it is very
important to call the school and request that work
be sent home for the student.
OSSLT Preparation
All grade ten students in Ontario are required to
write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test on
March 31th, 2016. On December 7 and
8th all grade ten students at Char-Lan will
participate in literacy skill carousels. On December
9th they will write a mock literacy test to assess
their strengths and identify areas to target for
improvement before the test. These practice tests,
marked by Char-Lan staff, will
provide individualized feedback. Students will
receive extra support at school and will be provided
with supplementary resources to take home,
especially in areas where they have demonstrated
that they need some extra practice. Literacy
instruction is integrated as important component of
classroom instruction in all subject areas and in
all grades at Char-Lan.
School Council
Our next School Council
Meeting will be held on Monday,
February 8th at 7:00 p.m. in
room 11 at Char-Lan. All
parents are welcome to attend.
