What is bibliographic referencing?
When writing an assignment or dissertation
your own thoughts and ideas build on those of
other writers and researchers. It is essential
that you acknowledge those sources of
information by:
– Acknowledging the source within the text.
– Giving full details of each item in a reference list.

Information Services and Systems
Why do I need to do it?
• To enable your lecturer to follow up the references and
find the book or journal article in a library.
• To enable your lecturer to check the accuracy of the
information you’ve given.
• To demonstrate to your lecturer that you have read widely
a range of opinions.
• To avoid plagiarism (using someone else’s ideas as your
own.)

Why do I need to do it?
Referencing is a transferrable skill!
• When writing a report for work, your reader can
easily see where you obtained your information.
• Shows employers you can find relevant
information for its needs and apply it
appropriately.
• If you publish a paper in a scholarly journal you
will need to use the style recommended by that
journal.

APA 6th
The style for the College of Business and
Economics is
APA
th
6
An Author-Date style similar to Harvard

APA 6th
What does it look like?
Go to pdf
Information Services and Systems
Really? It looks fiddly.
In short - Yes, it is!
Be careful with your references. Every
comma, full stop and use of italics is used for a
specific reason. You can’t change the way it
looks.
Stick to the style and be consistent.

In text citations
In the text of your assignment you need to give
the author(s) surname(s) , plus the year of
publication, plus the page reference for a
direct quote.
Different ways to quote:
In 2008 it was discovered..... (Jones).
Jones (2008) discovered that…
Recent research (Jones, 2008; Brown, 2001)…

Get organised!
• You’ve done your research, got your books,
journal articles etc.
• You need to think of how you’re going to keep
track of all this stuff.
• You may keep a notebook, use a Word
document or something else.
Information Services and Systems
EndnoteWeb: what is it?
• Web-based software
• Use it to collect all the details of all your
documents both print and electronic that
you’ve used for an assignment in one place
• You can input manually or download from a
library catalogue or database
Information Services and Systems
EndnoteWeb: why use it?
• It will help you keep track of your references
• It will help you to format your references
correctly (order, punctuation, italics)
• You can select the style you want – APA 6th for
Business & Economics assignments
• You can use it with Word – “Cite while you
write” – which writes your Reference List for
you at the end of your document.
