When writing an assignment or dissertation your own thoughts and ideas build on those of other writers and researchers. It is essential that you acknowledge those sources of information by: – Acknowledging the source within the text. – Giving full details of each item in a reference list. Referencing is a transferrable skill! • When writing a report for work, your reader can easily see where you obtained your information. • Shows employers you can find relevant information for its needs and apply it appropriately. • If you publish a paper in a scholarly journal you will need to use the style recommended by that journal.
