Present: John Evans, Sylverna Ford, Ed Frank, Mary Freilich, John Gwin for Stacey Smith, Annelle Huggins, Linda Hyatt, Bob Ivey for Elizabeth McDonald, Tom Mendina, Kevin Merriman, Anna Neal, Betsy Park, Perveen Rustomfram, James Singleton, Inez Todd Absent: Bess Robinson, Elizabeth McDonald, Stacey Smith 1. Learning Commons Update – Betsy Park Goprint which is used for our public printing is down with no estimated time for being up and running. Steve Canaday has been working extensively on getting it fixed. Dr. Ford stated the use of GoPrint is at a very low level so we are seeking a replacement or alternative ways to provide public printing. 2. NAAPA – Dr. Ford Henry Rudner, CEO of Ampro products initiated the National African American Photographic Archive (NAAPA) project; we have been in talks to transfer the project to the library. The Enterprise Systems Advisory Committee (ESAC) recently gave their approval of the project from a systems perspective. The project will focus on photos of the African American community in the Mid-South to be digitalized, stored, indexed, and made available as a collection on our website. Legal issues such as copyright along with the processes involved in putting the archives together are still being worked out. 3. Compass Society – Dr. Ford The LAC received three documents related to the Compass Society. The Compass Society is the name suggested by the University’s Public Relations (PR) Company for our new fundraising and development organization. The name Compass comes from the compass rose in the floor of the Rotunda. The first document defined membership in the Compass Society as open to anyone who believes in the library and is willing to contribute at least $1,000 per year. The primary focus of the $1,000 is to help us to build our endowment; it will also allow us to do other things. The second document showed how the organization’s name will appear on letterhead, brochures, and other materials along with a draft of a proposed lapel pin. The colors for the lapel pin will be blue and silver. There is also a silver only option; that one might be used to identify an individual’s membership longevity. The last document was a descriptive paragraph along with eight principles proposed by the PR Company. Each term represents one of the points on the compass and is intended to characterize the society. The LAC gave feedback for revising the paragraph as well as discussed several more meaningful terms for the eight principles. The terms proposed included the following: Eight principles proposed by PR company Expression Knowledge Leadership Imagination Inspiration Inquiry 01Enlightenment Achievement Principles proposed by the LAC Information Truth Learning Creativity Service Wisdom Synthesis By a show of hands most of the terms selected by the PR Company seemed to have more support than the terms added by the LAC. Leadership and expression were the low ones on the PR firm’s list. Creativity, service, and learning were among the highest eight principles proposed by the LAC. The LAC was asked to email the Dean as they think of other principles or suggestions. LAC Minutes – Tuesday, April 14, 2009 Page 2 4. Subscription Reduction Project The subscription reduction deadline has been extended to April 22, 2009. Departments that don’t need the extension are encouraged to get their information into the library as soon as possible. The sooner we receive departments’ information the sooner we can begin to compile a final list. The intent is to have the final cut list compiled and on the website before the end of this semester so that there is an opportunity for faculty to review it before they leave for the summer. The Dean has received questions about adding titles once a department has reached their target cut. Departments can add titles if they are below their target cuts. They will need to do their cuts plus some in order to add new titles. Adding titles will be a separate process and will not begin until May 15. 5. Budget Update The University is still looking at a budget cut in 2010. There are some expectations that in 2010 the stimulus money coming to us will help ease the budget pain but there is no news as to exactly how much money the University will receive. 6. Added Agenda Items There were no added agenda items. Announcements J. Singleton - He is placing “Turn Off” green stickers throughout the library as part of the “Turn off to turn on savings” initiative on campus. Please turn off lights in offices and other places whenever possible. It is the University’s thinking that by turning off lights and otherwise conserving energy we can save as much as a million dollars if we do it diligently. Office lights should be turned off when you are away for ten minutes or more. J. Evans - If your computer monitor is set to power off when the computer is turned off that is sufficient because it draws very little power. B. Parks - Question - How long does the computer stay off? It should be off until you turn it back on otherwise something is not set right. Systems Department should be alerted if your machine is automatically coming back on when it is supposed be off. T. Mendina - Faculty authored and created publications and scholarly works in a variety of media and from the various colleges and departments will be displayed in the rotunda beginning the morning of April 22 – 28 and moved to the Rose Theatre for convocation on Wednesday April 29. The academic procession will begin at 1:45 p.m. at the College of Communication and Fine Arts. J. Evans - His wife’s library (St. Mary’s) was featured in the American Libraries issue for April and if anyone has a copy of the magazine which they are no longer using he would like to receive it. L. Hyatt - The LSSA flea market and dessert sale is Thursday, April 16 from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. donated items for the sale can be given to Lucille Freeman or Joanne Waddell. Dr. Ford - The LSSA “We Are One” fundraising event tickets are on sale for $10.00 each. The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 a.m. The next scheduled LAC meeting is Tuesday, May 5, 2009 Linda Hyatt is scheduled to bring the refreshments. Submitted by: Inez Todd Approved by: Dr. Sylverna Ford
