Inspiring our Community for Future Generations
I. Call to Order
Mission Statement: The mission of the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council (YVSC) is to provide leadership to advance environmental,
economic, and social sustainability for current and future generations through education, programs, and building collaboration among individuals,
organizations, businesses, and government.
YVSC’s Guiding Principles are to:
1) promote sustainability as a core value of businesses and government in order to improve efficiencies in resource use and to reduce
environmental impacts
2) foster the concept of sustainability as a public value and encourage stewardship of natural resources
3) incorporate “triple bottom line” analysis by integrating economic, social and environmental considerations into policy and program decisions
4) establish measurable performance indicators, targets, and goals, and report on progress through annual reports
5) partner with local, state, and federal governments, community organizations, cultural institutions, businesses, and individuals to achieve the
goals of the organization.

Talking Green – Great turnout last month at the Transportation forum, thanks to Paul Potyen for all his help on that! This
month we’re teaming up with Historic Routt County, History Colorado and Bud Werner Library to put on The Sustainability
of Historic Preservation. Our Speakers are Patrick Eiden of History CO and a short story telling section with Paul Bonnifield,
should be a great one! 530pm Tue August 26 at the Library.
Zero Waste – as always, volunteers are needed for this weekend’s free concert and Saturday Market – there’s a link at the
bottom of your agendas, please send this to people you know who are needing community service hours!
Yampa Valley Recycles - YVR placed 5 temporary recycle containers along Yampa St and at Little Toots and Weiss
Park. Ernie Jenkins with Parks and Rec is servicing the units. Have attended City Council meetings to encourage their
support to make recycling service and permanent containers part of their long term budget. Saturday Safeway
recycling: Due to financial restraints the last Safeway service will be Sat. August 16. We are currently investigating a more
financially feasible and sustainable long term Saturday recycling option. A letter has been submitted to upper level Waste
Management personnel in Denver to ask that they consider opening their Steamboat recycle yard on Saturdays. We still
have not had a reply. We are still acquiring data from the local haulers for the Feasibility Study. As of now, no new
information to report.
The fall CDOE will be Sat. Oct 4th from 9-12 at Howelsen Hill. Stay tuned for more details.
All of the above will be discussed in more detail at the YVR monthly meeting tomorrow from 12-1 in this room.
Green Gardens Tour – Planning the 2014 Green Garden Tour – we were hoping to do a north Routt tour… stay tuned!
Green Building – Same goes for the planning the 2014 Green Building Tour – if anyone has suggestions of green homes that
should be on the tour, please see Andy after the meeting. We plan on meeting in early Sept to begin planning for the Nov
tour, if you’d like to join this committee, do let Andy know.
