CARSHALTON BOYS SPORTS COLLEGE
Letter from the Principal
Dear Candidate
Re: Post of Deputy Principal
Thank you for your interest in the position of Deputy Principal at Carshalton Boys Sports College.
I’m delighted to have this opportunity to introduce myself, to give some details about our school and
to describe the kind of candidate we hope to appoint to the position.
CBSC is a large school but one in which individuals are cared for and valued. We are successful but
very ambitious for further success. Students are a pleasure to work with, staff are of a high calibre
with a strong team spirit and high morale and governors and parent/carers are very supportive.
In 2014 the school achieved a fantastic set of results (see page 4) however 10 years ago CBSC was
under-subscribed with exam results well below National Average. Today our position is very
different; 653 applications for 240 places in Year 7 for September 2015, an OFSTED rating of “good
school” and visits to the school from the likes of Jamie Oliver, Raymond Blanc and His Royal
Highness, The Prince of Wales. Yet, the Senior Leadership Team feels as passionate now about the
future potential of the school as when we first started.
The existing SMT currently consists of one Vice Principal, three Deputy Principals and myself. We are
a very strong and cohesive team and whilst we challenge and are demanding, we lead with
emotional intelligence. We need someone to join us who is driven and ambitious with proven
leadership and management skills, committed to raising standards, expectation and achievement. In
return we can offer you a fantastic school, enthusiastic students, excellent resources, a supportive
Principal and SMT, warm and welcoming Staff and Governing Body and opportunities for
professional development.
If you would relish the challenge of this exciting post and can assist us in leading the school in the
next stage of its journey towards excellence we look forward to hearing from you. To apply please
complete the application form, together with a letter of suitability which should be no more than
two sides of A4. In your letter you should outline; any relevant experiences to date, your vision and
values relating to this position and what personally attracts you to this school.
Please feel free to call for an informal chat and I look forward to receiving your application.
Yours faithfully
Simon Barber
Principal

CARSHALTON BOYS SPORTS COLLEGE
Background
Carshalton Boys Sports College is a popular, over-subscribed non-selective community
comprehensive all boys’ school for students aged 11 to 19 located in the London Borough of Sutton.
We currently have 1,300 pupils on roll, of which 200 are in the Sixth Form and employ over 140 staff.
In September 2003 we received Sports College Status. We hold Sports Mark Gold in recognition of
our excellent sporting provision and are one of the lead schools in Sutton, developing sport across
the borough, co-ordinating programmes of work with local secondary and primary schools and the
local community.
In September 2004 we achieved Training School Status and since then have helped more than 400
teachers to gain Qualified Teacher Status. In 2005 we became the first secondary school in Sutton to
achieve National Healthy School’s Status and continue to work as a consultant for other schools,
within Sutton and neighbouring authorities.
In 2008 Carshalton Boys achieved re-designation for Investors in People for the fourth time and in
January 2010 we were delighted to achieve Investors in People, Gold. On 1 June 2011 Carshalton
Boys Sports College converted to Academy Status under the Academies Act 2010 and all the
operations and liabilities were transferred to the Academy from the London Borough of Sutton.
Budgets for the school are in excess of £7m with voluntary fund accounts of £50k and the Governing
Body has delegated the day-today responsibility to the Principal.
The chickens arrived in 2012, along with a Solar Dome and we were privileged to have His Royal
Highness, The Prince of Wales visit our school as part of a Countryfile profile on Healthy Schools. In
September 2013 we opened a brand new eight classroom Maths block and are currently planning to
build a new £2.5m English block due for completion in 2016.
In 2014 Carshalton Boys Sports College continued its record of achieving outstanding GCSE and A
level results, testament to the dedication of students and staff towards the shared goal of academic
excellence. Last year 60% of our Year 11 boys achieved A*-C grades in both English and Maths, with
progress in English at 74% and progress in Maths at 64%, in line with national expectations. In the
Sixth Form, we continue to see students perform above national average, and we have seen our
highest number of young men and women go on to study at University.
The ethos of our school is based upon a happy, warm, thriving atmosphere with a clear purposeful
approach. Our school motto ‘making a difference...’ is both our aim and a description of what we
do. We pride ourselves in identifying the talents of all students and nurture all students to fulfil their
potential in all areas, whether it is sporting, musical, drama, academic, design, linguistic etc.
Carshalton Boys is an inclusive school and works towards allowing every student to meet their
potential.
