SAFETY FIRST!!!
The following safety guidelines must be followed at all times:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Goggles must be worn in the laboratory at all times, even if you have
completed your experiment.
Having and/or consuming food or drink in the laboratory is strictly
prohibited.
Never leave a flame unattended.
Tie back long hair and secure all loose clothing before conducting any
experiments.
Feet must be completely covered during lab – no open toed shoes
(sandals, flip=flops or the like).
If an accident occurs, notify your lab instructor immediately.
Do not run or throw anything in the laboratory.
•
•
•
Always listen carefully to your lab instructor for safety precautions
and procedure modification.
All chemical waste must be disposed of properly. Your instructor will
provide you with specific instructions at the beginning of each lab
regarding how to handle the chemical waste for that experiment.
Failure to adhere to safety guidelines may result in your removal from
the lab and an automatic failure for that experiment.
Chemistry 101.1 Grading Rubric
A quiz based on the previous lab experiment will be administered at the beginning
of each lab session. NOTE: Tardiness will result in a grade of zero (0) for that day.
Your quiz average is worth 25% of your overall grade. The lab reports comprise
75% of your overall grade. Included in your lab report is your pre-lab assignment,
which must be completed and experimental lab procedures read before coming to
class each day. The full lab report is required for each experiment and is due at the
beginning of the next lab class following the completion of the lab experiment. For
Laboratory Experiment #7 (Classes of Chemical Reactions) only one laboratory final
report is required, upon completion of Part 2. Your lab report should include the
pre-lab, data sheet(s), and answered post-lab questions stapled together.
All pre-labs, data sheets, and post-lab questions are to be found in the laboratory
textbook (Bettelheim & Landesberg). You may either cut from the text or use
photocopies of those pages for your reports. Bring these to class (with the pre-lab
portion already completed) when you are to do the experiment. Data measured in
laboratory is to be recorded directly on your sheets. Read the background
information and information from the textbook pages for that week’s experiment
prior to coming to class.
All laboratory experiments are to be performed individually (and evaluated by the
instructor). There are no team experiments. Each person registered for lab is to
perform each laboratory experiment individually.
Chemistry Lab Attendance Policy
•
•
•
•
ª
Attendance in laboratory is mandatory.
Students must report to laboratory on time.
Late lab reports will be penalized two points (out of a total of 25
points for each report) per week. The first two-point penalty will be
applied to lab reports that are submitted after the lab class time when
they are due. Lab reports more than two (2) weeks late will not be
accepted. A score of zero (0) will be reported for such.
Failure to hand in a lab report will result in a grade of zero (0) for that
lab, which will be averaged into your overall laboratory grade.
A missed laboratory class (for a valid reason - illness, verified by a
note from a registered physician; court appearance, verified by a note
from an officer of the court; death in the family, preferably your own)
can be made-up by following this procedure:
(a) Obtain a lab make-up form from your regular lab instructor.
(b) Attend an alternate Chem. 101.1 laboratory class that is working
on the same experiment that you missed during the week the
experiment is being performed. Get signed permission from the
instructor of the section you hope to attend to make-up a missed
laboratory experiment.
(c) Follow the procedures for your missed laboratory experiment
from your lab manual.
(d) Complete the lab report.
(e) Staple the make-up form to your lab report and submit it to your
regular lab instructor the next time your class meets. Lab reports
more than two (2) weeks late will not be accepted.
