COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS

Introductions

Assumptions

WHY ARE WE HERE?

 Current 8 th graders and parents interested in finding out what the College and Career Pathways is all about.

 This evening –

 We will review what the program is

 We will talk about the pro’s and con’s

At the end of the evening, please turn in your form that indicates your interest level in these programs so I can let your home schools know.

WHAT IS IT?

 House Bill 1184 was passed by the 2012 General

Assembly

 HB1184 allows high school students to work towards a TCC degree or certificate while still in high school

 There are currently three options:

 General Studies Certificate

 Social Sciences Transfer Degree

 Mechatronics Certificate

ARE THESE PROGRAMS FOR EVERYONE?

 Each program is designed for a particular type of student.

 Each program may not be a good choice for all students

 Depending on your college/career plans, you have to decide the benefits and how they may pertain to you.

VOCABULARY CHECK

 Advanced Placement (AP) Classes

 These are classes taught at the high school by high school teachers certified by the AP program

 Have an approved curriculum similar to a college class

 Heavy focus on reading and writing skills and critical thinking skills

 Students only earn college credit by earning a designated score on the AP exam in May

 Tests are scored on a 1-5 scale.

 Typically a score of 3, 4, 5 will either earn college credit or waive college requirements

 The AP exam is multiple choice and essay based

 Every college is different about what scores they accept in order to award college credit

 As of 2015-2016 school year – students pay $92 per AP exam

 Students on free/reduced lunch program will not pay the full amount

AP AND HOW IT WORKS

 Directly from the College Board website:

“The first thing to understand is that each college and university — not the College Board or the AP Program — makes its own decisions about awarding credit and placement .”

HOW MANY PEOPLE MAKE THESE

SCORES?

From the College Board Website in an article dated 2/11/2014 https://www.collegeboard.org/releases/2014/class -2013advanced-placement-results-announced

In the Class of 2013

33.2 % of public high school graduates took an AP Exam

Of those students who took an AP Exam, 20.1% scored a 3 or higher on the AP Exam.

IF YOU CRUNCH THE NUMBERS

 Based on the percentages from the previous slide:

 Out of a graduating class of 500 seniors, roughly 166 will take an AP exam, and of those 166, 34 of the 166 seniors will score a 3 or higher on an AP exam

 These stats will change from high school to high school

VOCABULARY CHECK

 Dual Enrollment Classes

 Taught at the high school by high school teachers who are certified by TCC

 In Chesapeake Public schools, usually

 2 semester class

 Students must take both semesters to earn the high school (ex.

Dual Enrollment English - English 12 credit)

 If student earns a C or better in both parts, he/she can earn college credit from VA colleges

 There is a fee for taking the classes

 As of 2015-2016 school year the fee is $45 per TCC credit hour

 If a semester class is 3 credit hours – there would be a $135 fee each semester

 There is NO financial aid for high school students for dual enrollment fees

 Students are on the TCC grading scale – no pluses or minuses

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?

 If you are interested in pursuing one of the College and Career Pathways options, you need to pick one and make sure you are taking the right high school classes each year.

 This also means making choices when it comes to things like Governor’s School for the Arts, IB

Program, Academies, sports, etc.

 Let’s look at each option

 *All fees listed are approximate and based on 2015 -

2016 school year. These fees may change from year to year.

GENERAL STUDIES CERTIFICATE

 What do I get?

 If you take the right classes and earn the appropriate scores on the

AP exams, you will get a certificate that says you completed the program

 Is this different than just simply taking AP classes in high school?

 This option says you are attempting and hopefully completing a set curriculum to earn this certificate.

 If I don’t do this program, can I still earn college credits while still in high school?

 Yes. Students have been earning college credits while still in high school for years.

GENERAL STUDIES CERTIFICATE

 The following slide shows the basic 4 year plan for this program.

 This 4 year plan would be for a student working towards an

Advanced Studies Diploma and the General Studies Certificate

 This plan is not set in stone and some modifications can be made to when classes are taken as long as all classes are taken.

AP SCORES

 And remember – students have to score a 3 or better on the AP exams to earn the credits to earn the certificate or degree.

 Just taking the AP exams doesn’t mean the student will earn the certificate or degree.

 Note that in the senior year, the student is taking AP Government. We won’t get the AP scores until July after the senior year. The student would not be awarded the Social

Sciences Transfer Degree until AFTER high school graduation.

SOCIAL SCIENCE TRANSFER DEGREE

 Everyone says this program will save my child money in college. Is that correct?

 If a student successfully completes this degree, he/she may be able to start college as a junior. It would be possible to finish a 4 year college in 2 years.

 So if a student wants to graduate from college in less than 4 years, this program will save you money

 If you want to be in college for four years, this program may or may not save you money

 Some colleges charge by the credit hour, and some charge by the semester (no matter how many classes he/she takes)

Mechatronics

WHAT IS MECHATRONICS?

 This certificate will allow a student to take more classes in high school that focus on careers that require electronic, mechanical, computer and control skills. These kinds of jobs include robot installation and maintenance, automation equipment installation, troubleshooting and maintenance and

PLC programming. You will learn how to install, maintain, and repair the mechanical, controls, fluid power systems, electrical and electronic equipment found in various fields. Your mechatronics training will equip you to make sure HVAC, mechanical, electrical and computer-driven systems run.

WHAT IS MECHATRONICS? CONT.

“This program launches high school students into in-demand careers in advanced manufacturing. These systems are typically composed of traditional mechanical and electrical components, but are referred to as “smart” devices or systems because of the incorporation of sensors, actuators, robotics, instrumentation, process control and automation. The program is best suited for students with an interest in electronics who enjoy working with their hands to build electrical, mechanical and robotic systems.

Enrolled students will be on a special career pathway that includes taking selected classes in their high schools for the first two years, working toward a standard high school diploma, and a recognized industry credential in electronics. After graduating from high school, students can continue their education at TCC and earn the

Associate of Applied Science in Mechatronics in just one year.”

- Chesapeake Public School Website

MECHATRONICS CERTIFICATE

 What do I get?

 If you take the right classes and, you will get a certificate that says you completed the program

 You will be a part of an internship program.

 Is there a benefit to this program?

 Yes. If you are specifically interested in this career, you will be taking more classes that will directly relate to what you want to do when you graduate high school.

 If you successfully complete this program, you could go to TCC and possibly earn an Associate’s Degree in 18 months.

 If I do this program, can I still go to college?

 Yes, but remember that you are probably pursuing a Standard Diploma not an Advanced Studies Diploma.

 Many VA colleges only require a Standard Diploma

HIGHLIGHTS

 Students pursuing this Certificate will be typically be working towards a Standard Diploma – not an Advanced Studies Diploma.

 Total fee of approximately $1,305* Scholarships are available.

9th Grade –

10th Grade –

11th Grade –

12th Grade –

Must complete Algebra 1 and must take

899 Technology of Robotics Design

Must take Electronics 1 and 2 at IRHS as a

Dual Enrollment Class – students must pass the TCC placement test.

Must take 2 classes at TCC during the school day

Student will spend the entire 2nd semester at TCC

IS THIS ALL SET IN STONE?

 No – many of these programs are brand new

 No one has completed this program – it’s too young

 There are discussions with TCC about how and when to offer classes

 There are never any guarantees that all classes will be offered every year.

 Things may evolve as we go

WHY DO IT?

 What are the benefits of these (all three) programs?

 Allows an academically gifted student to be challenged by more than a typical high school curriculum

 Allows a student to spend time during the junior and/or senior year at TCC instead of at the high school

 Would allow a student to highlight this on a college application that he/she is pursuing a special type of degree or certificate

 For mechatronics certificate – student will take focused classes and participate in an internship that will enable him/her to be better qualified after high school for certain types of jobs

 Students may earn a certificate or TCC transfer degree that says they completed this program

WHY NOT TO DO IT?

 Dual Enrollment Classes and AP exams cost money – it’s expensive

 You have to earn the AP scores – not just take the classes

 Students taking classes at TCC may miss out on school events

 Students who have other interests (sports, leadership roles, etc.) may have a difficult time fitting everything in

 While these programs are new, high school students have been earning college credits while in high school for the past

20 plus years – you don’t have to do these programs to earn college credits

 Following the suggested four year plan for some of these programs may push students too hard or may limit their choices

YOU MENTIONED . . .

 Sports – for Mechatronics and the Transfer Degree – playing sports in the senior year of high school is unlikely.

 Saving Money – Depending on how many years a student wants to be in college, he/she may not save any money if he/she wants to go to college for four years.

 Choices have to be made – you can’t do everything

 No financial aid – except for Mechatronics, there is no financial aid for highs school students

 Benefits – ideal situation for students who want to be academically challenged or who want to be more prepared for the career field of Mechatronics

 4 years of college – if I can graduate in less than 4 years, wouldn’t I want to do that?

WHAT DO I DO FROM HERE?

 If you are still interested in one of these programs, you need to turn in the form given out tonight. These forms will be sent to the home schools.

 If you are interested, the home school needs to make sure your student is signed up for the right classes based on the suggested four year plan

 If you are no longer interested, turn in the form tonight saying you are no longer interested. You don’t need to do anything except make sure your child is scheduled for the science he/she wants for 9 th grade: Earth Science or Biology

 What if my child starts the program and then decides it is not for him

 That is fine, but he/she may be challenging himself too much in 9 th grade, and the grades he/she earns are there forever.

QUESTIONS?

Questions or Concerns?

WHAT IF I HAVE MORE QUESTIONS AFTER

TONIGHT?

If you have questions after tonight, current 8

th

graders and their parents should contact the 8

th

grade counselor

Current high school students and parents should contact the high school counselor.

FINISHING UP

Thank you for attending.

Please make sure you return your completed form letting me know your name and interest level so I can send back to the home school.
