ATLANTIC CAPE COMMUNITY COLLEGE CURRICULUM COMMITTEE February 12, 2015 Minutes - approved Attendance: B. Heard, G. Michelfelder, J. Taggart, R. Benner, E. Russell, M. Huber, J. Katz, S. Shields, C. Fortune, H. Boone, L. Ingram, B. Clark, K. McClay, D. Vassallo, H. Peterson, M. Levy, J. Marler. L. Campbell, Recorder. Guests: M. Kleinz, J. Sacchinelli, L. Lemons. Minutes: The December meeting minutes were approved. J. Katz reported that O. Hernandez would like to add Outcomes to all Professional Series and Certificate programs. Departments should complete this process during the fall semester and forward to L. Campbell by January. They will be placed in the 2016-17 Catalog. MATH071-Elementary Technical Mathematics, new course, M. Kleinz This course was developed to streamline the developmental math process for non-major science courses. The most important elements of MATH073 & 074 have been combined into MATH071. Students will not be required to complete 2 semesters of developmental math prior to enrolling in some science courses. Students on this track could take MATH121-Applications of Math, or MATH 220-Statistical Methods. There were some questions and concerns regarding a student who takes 071 and then decides to change to a major requiring MATH122 or higher. M. Kleinz explained that in that situation, a student would need to go back and take MATH074, but wouldn’t need to take 073. They could also re-take the placement test to see if they would be able to go directly into MATH122-College Algebra. If the student has completed MATH121, they would still need to go back to take 074 prior to enrolling in MATH122 (MATH121 doesn’t prepare students for 122). Additional concerns and Committee suggestions included instructions for Advisement, Testing Center notification and plans for another placement option, course description needs to be updated, add course content which includes measurements for Nursing students, and several committee members questioned use of the word “Elementary” in the course title. The math and science representatives in attendance clarified that there should be no negative perception of the term within the Math/Science fields. NOT APPROVED (The math department should address concerns and resubmit at a future meeting) BIOL120-Human Anatomy & Physiology I, pre-req. change, B. Heard The current prereq. allows students who haven’t completed high school biology or chemistry to enroll in A&P I. As a result, many students aren’t prepared and the course has traditionally had high attrition rates. The new prereq., which will better prepare students to succeed, will read: “BIOL109 or CHEM100 or CHEM110 with a C or better, or a score of 70% on the chemistry or biology placement exam. Completion of MATH074 or equivalent with a grade of C or better or Placement Test score or SAT score. Students planning to transfer should consult their transfer institution for advice on whether to take a biology or chemistry course.” A Committee member stated that Nursing students should take CHEM100 or CHEM110, rather than BIOL109, because the chemistry courses are more likely to transfer into Bachelor-level Nursing programs. A note will be added to the prereq. description. Another member asked about the Chemistry and Biology “Placement exams” and if the Science department would be providing the exams to the Testing Center so it can be placed on a student’s record. APPROVED with addition to the prerequisite description for Nursing students. AVIT127-Introduction to Airport Management, new course – Jim Taggart This is a common introductory level course in four year aviation programs. Gives students an understanding of their future workplace and/or prepares them for future study in the business/management side of the aviation industry. The department may consider expanding this into a program down the road. APPROVED Aviation Studies, A.S., program change Remove BUSN247 and replace with AVIT127. APPROVED Professional Pilot Option, Aviation Studies, A.S., program change Remove TCOM125 and replace with AVIT127. APPROVED Professional Helicopter Pilot Option, Aviation Studies, A.S., program change Add AVIT127 to program courses. Total degree credits increase from 63 –> 66. APPROVED Computer Programming, A.A.S., program change Change the Communication gen. ed. requirement by removing ENGL102 and adding ENGL230Technical Writing (recently approved by State as a general education course). Change the General Education Elective to Humanities: Choose PHIL111, ARTS, 108, PHIL102, PHIL105, or PHIL110. APPROVED Database Design & Development Option, Computer Programming, A.A.S., program change Same changes as Computer Programming, A.A.S. (see above) APPROVED Office Systems Technology, A.A.S., program change Same changes as Computer Programming, A.A.S. (see above) APPROVED Computer Applications Option, Office Systems Tech., A.A.S., program change Same changes as Computer Programming, A.A.S. (see above) APPROVED Computer Systems Support, A.A.S., program change Same changes as Computer Programming, A.A.S. (see above) APPROVED Technical Studies, A.A.S., program change Changed the Communication gen. ed. from ENGL102 to “ENGL102 or ENGL230”. Under the Humanities general education section, a note was added stating the following: “If you take ENGL230, you must select from one of the following: ARTS108, PHIL102, PHIL105, PHIL106, PHIL110, or PHIL111. This is necessary because ENGL230 has not been approved to satisfy the required integrated goal of Ethical Reasoning & Action. Students who select ENGL102 will already meet this requirement. The Technical Core was changed from 20-25 credits to Up to 25 credits to allow more flexibility for students with their PLAs. Program Electives were changed to Program Courses to be provide clarity and credits were changed from 19-24 19-41. It was explained that these courses are selected after a student sits down with their advisor to discuss their goals. After discussion, the total degree credits were changed from 64 62-64. The catalog description of the program was also updated to provide clarity about the PLA process. Outcomes were missing from the last catalog so they were added (Outcomes were already listed on the degree web page). APPROVED CHEM210-Organic Chemistry I, course change, L. Lemons The prerequisite has been changed from CHEM110 CHEM111 with a grade of C or better. This change will better prepare students for Organic Chemistry. Currently, many students are entering the course without proper preparation. The course description and goals were also updated. APPROVED PHYS102-Fundamentals of Astronomy, new course, J. Sacchinelli, A. Shelton, F. Schaaf This course was previously approved as a “one time only” and is being offered this semester. The department would like to make it a permanent course and will then seek general education approval. The course will utilize the STEM telescopic observatory. According to NJTRANSFER, the course should transfer to Rutgers, Rowan, Kean, Stockton, Monmouth, FDU, Seton Hall, TCNJ, and Georgian Court. APPROVED HOSP150-Hospitality Sales & Marketing, course number chg., J. Katz This course is taught as an upper-level course at Stockton and FDU. The department is changing the course to a 200-level to better indicate the rigor and facilitate transferability. The new course number will be HOSP265. APPROVED HOSP134-Restaurant Operations, credit change, J. Katz This course initially had a lab component and was four credits. The lab was eliminated and it has been determined that the course should now be three credits rather than four. This change will not impact transferability. Although not indicated on the form, K. McClay pointed out that this credit change will impact ACA programs and total credits required for those programs. Their programs will be adjusted in the catalog to reflect this impact. APPROVED Hospitality Management, A.A.S., program change, J. Katz A general education math course will be required, rather than giving students the option of taking either a Math or Science course. This change will help students meet the program Outcome, Identify and use quantitative skills to make appropriate business decisions. In addition, the change in Program and total degree credits has been adjusted due to the credit change for HOSP134. Total credits required has been changed from 64 63. APPROVED Business Administration Option, Liberal Studies, drop option, K. Giulian This option is being eliminated due to redundancy and general goals of the typical business student. Students will still have the option of taking either the A.S. or A.A.S. in Business Administration. APPROVED FYI - ENGL212-Significant Themes in Literature, new topic syllabus, E. Russell Topic: The Bible as Literature The new course topic was accepted as an FYI. Adjournment.
