SES Applies for Green School Recertification
By: Michele Hampton
The Maryland Green School Awards Program is a
framework for a holistic, integrated approach to
authentic learning that incorporates local
environmental issue investigation and professional
development with environmental best
management practices and community
stewardship. Mrs. Embert and Mrs. Valenti are
coordinating activities in order to acquire Green
School status for SES. Currently, students are
participating in "No Waste Wednesdays" by
observing the amount of food that they throw
away each day. During the first week, SES
students reduced the amount of waste by four
pounds, and continue to decrease the amount of
waste at the rate of two pounds per week. SES
students started this project by weighing the
fourth grade lunches and soon will extend this to
the other grades. They are making efforts to
reduce the amount of waste. Good luck to SES
eagles, and I hope they accomplish their goals and
have a noteworthy learning experience. SES has
applied for Green School Recertification.

Grade 2 News
What happened to spring? We
have been very busy in Pre-k
learning about how living things
and their environment grow and
change over time. They have
been reviewing numbers 0-10,
measurement, patterns,
and letters of the alphabet and
their sounds. We will bring
closure to the unit Growing and
Changing by taking a field trip to
Godfrey's Farm to pick
strawberries on Friday, May
17th. The children are very
excited about going to the
farm. Our final unit in Pre-K will
be about getting ready for
Kindergarten. The children will
continue to work on letter
identification (uppercase and
lowercase) by name and by
sound. In math, they will
explore the use and the meaning
of currency and coins. In
science, they will continue
to identify and describe bugs.
The Pre-k field day will be Friday,
May 24th. In addition, our End
of the Year Picnic/ Blue Sky
Puppet Show sponsored by The
Judy Center will be at SES on
Friday, June 7th. Please be on
the look out for more
information which will be sent at
a later date. A huge thanks to all
the parents in the A.M. and P.M.
classes for all of your help this
year.
Your Pre-K Team
Kindergarten is looking forward
to many great activities in the
next few weeks . Our trip to see
Cinderella is on May 17, we pick
strawberries on May 21 and there
are special events planned for
June 7. We are also planning a pet
show (with stuffed animals) in
May. Watch your child's folder for
more details about these events .
Remember to read with your child
and ask detailed questions about
the story!
The Kindergarten Team
May and June will be busy months
Grade 1 News
The end of the school year is
quickly approaching. For the
remainder of the year, in
math, we will cover time,
measurement, geometry and
fractions. These are very
important topics. Please
continue to do homework
nightly. Please continue to
read and complete reading
logs. This is the very best
thing you can do to support
your child's reading and
writing skills.

A field trip has been planned for
Friday, June 7, 2013. Second grade
will be going to The Chesapeake
Bay Maritime Museum in St.
Michael’s to learn about the bay
environment. This is a change from
our original date, due to several
factors. It will be an extended day
trip with a return time of 3:30. We
will be able to have 9 chaperones
(ride the bus) per class. We will also
have our end of year picnic and our
awards ceremony on Wednesday,
June 5, 2013, so save the date. We
will be spending most of the day at
the Sudlersville Park.
You know we are continuing with a
rigorous academic routine from
now until the end of the year. Our
Reading Literacy Block is going well.
Most of our students continue
making steady gains. Math units
will incorporate geometry, money,
time, measurement and graphing.
In Science, we will be completing a

Health Room
Our grills will soon be warming up
and we will be getting together
with our families and friends for
cookouts. Did you know that there
are about 76 million people a year
in the United States who develop a
food borne illness?
A food borne illness is most often
caused by the harmful bacteria
Escherichia coli which is found in
raw and undercooked meat and
poultry. Salmonella can be found in
meats as well as eggs, dairy
products, fish, vegetables and fruit.
The ten most riskiest foods are
leafy lettuce, greens, tomatoes,
sprouts, potatoes, berries, cheese,
ice cream, eggs, tuna, and oysters.
The following steps will help you
handle your food safely to decrease
your risk of a food borne illness:
Cook your meat, poultry, and eggs
thoroughly and use your meat
thermometer. This will kill harmful
bacteria.
Wash your produce well under
running water. Don’t cross
contaminate your foods. Clean all
of your surfaces, cutting boards,
and utensils with hot soapy water.
Don’t forget to wash your hands.
Refrigerate leftovers. Food should
not be left out of the refrigerator
for more than 2 hours. If the room
temperature is 90’F or more it
needs to be refrigerated within an
hour. Bacteria can multiply rapidly
if it is not well handled. Check to
see that your refrigerator is set @
40’F or below and the freezer is 0’F
or below.
Take the time to prepare your food
safely and enjoy your cookout!

Hopefully a paper came home to you
about the Science Fair on May
20th. I know we have many budding
scientists here at SES! Participation
is optional, yet we can help you
along the way if you are
interested. Please let me know if
you have any questions or would like
another copy of the instructions.
Students will have the opportunity to
share their project during our STEM
night on May 20th at 5:30. Dinner
will be provided, and parents and
children will participate in STEM
activities and view the Science Fair
projects.
It should be a great night, and I hope
to see all our families there, whether
or not you participate in the Science
Fair!
Math Matters
MATH MATTERS
for the summer
Your home is full of
opportunities to explore math
with your child and, at the same
time, build his or her selfconfidence and understanding
of mathematical ideas. This is a
chance for you and your child to
"talk math" that is, to
communicate about math while
discovering relationships
between numbers. Being able to
describe mathematical patterns
and relationships, such as those
between "addition and
subtraction" or "odd and even
numbers," is important to later
success in math.
Students need practice in order
to maintain their math skills
during the summer break.
Be sure to talk about numbers
and math in your daily activities.
Children can count coins, tell
time, add up costs and calculate
change. They can practice their
facts using math card games like
“Top It”.
Coin clues. Ask your child to
gather some change in his or her
hand without showing what it is.
Start with amounts of 25 cents
or less (for first-graders, you can
start with pennies and nickels).
Ask your child to tell you how
much money and how many
coins there are. Guess which
coins are being held. For
example, "I have 17 cents and 5
coins. What coins do I have?" (3
nickels and 2 pennies).

Congratulations to all artists for their
amazing hard work all year long! The
art room has been producing
extremely colorful art in the form of
collage, paintings, and drawings.
Students are finishing up exploring
color and value, as well as collages. To

on a variety of art integrating textures
and creatures. This has been an
exciting year. Thank you for all of your
hard work. I will be out on maternity

Sleep and School Performance
When you get too little sleep on a
regular basis, a condition known as
sleep deprivation can occur, causing
you to shortchange yourself on a very
important aspect of life.
Everyone knows that food and water
are essential to life. Getting enough
sleep is just as important. Yes, life is
hectic and juggling time and schedules
can be extremely difficult. The
responsibilities of going to school,
working, recreating and enjoying a
satisfying social life all cut into the
time you have to sleep. Interestingly
enough, without the proper amount
of sleep, each category mentioned will
suffer.

for an appointment to register their children if they have not already done so.
Please save the date for Friday, June 7th, 2013 for our annual end-of-the-year picnic! The Judy Center
provides this culminating activity to celebrate the year we have had with our pre-k, Kindergarten, Family
Center, Playgroup and Child Care Provider and other partnering agency families who live in the SES zone.
The event features children performing songs and finger plays and the Blue Sky Puppet Theatre will be
presenting “Bananas”, a puppet show about the importance of health and nutrition. The Judy Center will be
providing bag dinners for all! This will be held at SES on Friday, June 7th from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00p.m. (ending
time may be later depending on how many classes perform). Please look for flyer coming soon. Due to
ordering meals, R.S.V.P. will be necessary.
The Judy Center Playgroup is making plans for the summer now. Playgroup will continue throughout the
summer and may have to offer two sessions depending on enrollment. Please look for Playgroup flyer/invite
coming soon as well. The Family Center also runs 12 months and will continue to offer playgroup on
Wednesdays. This has been a great year to be a part of the Judy Center/SES community! Thanks for making
us feel welcome!
