The Clean Nova Scotia Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization that started in 1988.

We work in vital environmental areas like energy, water, transportation and waste. The Clean

Foundation provides the knowledge, tools and inspiration needed to encourage the individual actions that add up to positive environmental change. We partner with individual citizens, governments, organizations, communities and businesses to find environmental solutions.

You may know us as Clean Nova Scotia, but we work across Atlantic Canada, throughout the traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik. Our local roots are going global, exploring how our knowledge and experience can be used in other countries, including nations in the developing world. That’s why we say we’re just Clean.

We are currently seeking a hardworking, dynamic and motivated individual to add to our Nova

Scotia Youth Conservation Corps (NSYCC) team for summer 2015, who has a strong passion for people and the environment. Our approach is always collaborative and team oriented.

Program Overview:

The NSYCC program was established in 1989 to provide Nova Scotian youth with training and employment opportunities in the environmental field. This program engages community partners across the province to hire students to carry out work that enhances the local environment through the summer months. The NSYCC provides Nova Scotian youth with environmental work experience, an enhanced appreciation of the environment and their community, and develops skills for life-long learning including, team-building and leadership skills, public speaking and community outreach, increased knowledge for future employment and/or education ventures, program evaluation techniques, the ability to give back to their community and their environment, and workplace safety training, including first aid, WHMIS, and Occupational Health & Safety.

Position Overview:

The community partner for this Summer Intern position through the Nova Scotia Youth

Conservation Corps (NSYCC) will be the Town of Mulgrave, reporting to Recreation and Physical

Coordinator. In this position, you will be mainly responsible for research and development of day camps and special events with education and awareness of environmental issues; promotion of

Active Transportation, and waste management. Reporting to the Recreation & Physical Activity

Coordinator, Mulgrave Youth Conservation Team Members will participate in research, planning, and organizing day camps, programs, and special events that will enhance the environment in the Town, improve waste management practices and educate residents concerning sustainable practices, increase level of active transportation through walking and cycling clubs.

The successful candidate will be working a majority of their time outdoors, in adverse weather conditions, performing physically demanding labour such as, gardening, beach, street and park clean ups, and active transportation, walking and cycling.

About the Community Partner:

The Town of Mulgrave is a community located in the County of Guysborough Nova Scotia, on the

Strait of Canso. The population (2011) is 795 residents. The Go Green Mulgrave project will be implemented by the Town of Mulgrave Recreation Department.

The objective of the Town of Mulgrave Recreation Department is to encourage active living, to promote regular physical activity, foster healthy use of leisure time, encourage healthy eating, promote Active Transportation, and to raise awareness of community initiatives. The Town has r ecently adopted a “Physical Activity Plan” and an “Active Transportation Policy”. Inherent in these documents are objectives to increase physical activity of residents, particularly in the natural environment, and to increase the attractiveness and usefuln ess of the Town’s physical environment in a sustainable manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In this position, you will be mainly responsible for the specific duties and responsibilities of the

GO Green Mulgrave Youth Conservation Team Members. The listing is not intended to be allinclusive nor to limit the employee’s initiative, nor is it intended to limit the Recreation & Physical

Activity Coordinator’s right to assign other duties. These duties include

Research & Planning: The team members will participate in undertaking research related to community conservation issues and sustainability and will work with their supervisor to plan the programs and activities to take place under the GO Green Mulgrave project;

Public Awareness and Education: Team members will work with their supervisor to develop and implement a program of public awareness and education related to environment and sustainability, and active transportation including the preparation of brochures and visual aids, public displays. The awareness and education campaign will be directed specifically at youth and seniors, but will also provide information and resources for all Town residents;

Physical Activities: Team members will be directly involved in community clean-ups of beaches, streets and parks in the community and will encourage and direct residents’ volunteer involvement in these activities;

Community Garden: Together with youth in the community and the recreation coordinator, the team members will plan, plant, care for and harvest a community garden, as well as planning a fall planting program;

Summer Day Camps: Team members will organize and implement day camps through the summer months to education youth about environmental issues and work on community projects;

Active Transportation: The Go Green Mulgrave team will develop a plan for creating awareness, promoting, and encouraging Active Transportation. Promote the newly developed trail; create a walking and cycling club;

Program Evaluation: The team and supervisor will participate in a 1-2 day debrief / workshop to evaluate the program and to prepare a statement of lessons learned and recommendation for future programs of this nature;

Other Duties: Other duties as required from time to time, as directed by the Recreation and

Physical Activity Coordinator based on ongoing assessment of the project and its activities.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;

Must be between the ages of 15 and 30;

Must be a full-time student and intending to return to school in Fall 2015;

Is not a member of immediate family of community partner;

Have an aptitude for safe work practices and the ability to multi-task in a busy work environment;

Be able to work productively as part of a team while responding to feedback;

Strong verbal and written communication skills;

Computer Skills, including word processing;

Must complete a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse registry;

Demonstrates interest in future employment in the environmental or ‘green’ sector is considered an asset,
