7. JOHN3 HITT (281) (John2, Peter1)7 was born before 1743 at Prince William Co., Virginia. He
married Sarah (--?--) (402). He died on 27 May 1805 at Fauquier Co., Virginia.
He from the records of Earl J. Hitt 02 jan 1999 posted on the internet. {#13}1. John HITT Jr.[1]
was born before 1743 in Prince William County, Virginia. He died about 1805 in Fauquier
County, Virginia. In 1761, John Hitt, Jr. was a member of the Fauquier County Militia in the
French and Indian War and a muster list shows him present for muster in 1761.(Virginia
Magazine of History & Biography, Vol 7, pp 305-6). Therefore, in 1761 he was at least 18 years
of age. John, Jr. was listed in the 1770 and 1777 Rent Rolls for Fauquier County, Virginia, with
53 acres of land. The 1783 through 1786 land taxes list John as owning 50 acres of land, and the
1788 through 1793 land taxes list him with 144 acres of land. In 1792 he is listed with 37.5 acres
of land which he purchased from Russell. John Hitt, Jr. appears in the 1800 Tax List for
Culpeper County, Virginia, District of David Brown. (Virginia Magazine of History and
Biography, Vol 62, No. 1, January 1954, p. 124). From 1786 to 1810, the Fauquier County
tithables list at various times the following sons of John: Elijah, James, Jesse, John, Nathan, and
William (for details see Germanna Record No. 1, p.17-18). On 9 December 1802, William
Briggs and Sarah his wife of Stafford County deeded to John Hitt of Fauquier County, for 150.00
lbs, 169 acres of land granted to Briggs by Arthur Morison and wife January 31, 1798. The land
was S/S of Hedgeman River and adjacent to David Briggs. Witnesses: Elizabeth Hitt, Jesse Hitt,
and Elisha Curtis. (Culpeper County, Virginia Deed Book X, p. 226). Elizabeth and Jesse Hitt
were the children of John Hitt and Elisha Curtis was John's son-in-law who married daughter
Sarah Hitt. One reference gives John's age as 64 when he died. It is believed that John died
without a will, however, his estate was appraised on May 27, 1805. The account of the sales of
his estate lists the following purchasers: John Kemper, Elijah Hitt, Nathan Hitt, Charles Scott,
Jesse Hitt, John Casey, William Hitt, John Hitt, Elisha Curtis, Elizabeth Hitt, Susannah Hitt,
William Bell, Martin Hitt, Francis James, and Isaac Campbell. (Fauquier County, Virginia Will
Book 4, p. 101, 103). Elijah, Nathan, Jesse, William, John, Elizabeth, and Susannah Hitt were his
children, and Elisha Curtis was his son-in-law, husband of his daughter Sarah. After John's
death, his three eldest sons were each named as guardians of one of his youngest children: John
guardian of Susannah, Nathan guardian of Stephen, and Elijah guardian of Elizabeth. (Fauquier
County Virginia Guardian Bonds 1759-1871; Gott.) Sarah ???? died about 1810, however, Sarah
survived her husband and can last be found in the tithables in 1809. {#13}{#13}.

He Some reachers Question who Peters father was. Maurice R. Hitt Jr.C.G. States: 'There has
been some question as to which family this Peter belongs. Some have it that he was the son of
Harmon Hitt. But there is little doubt, given the evidence found thus far, that he was the son of
John Hitt.' * *
Hannah in her affidavit for a war pension states: 'that she was married in Turkey Run Church in
the County of Fauquier,by old Parson Craig, and hath lived in said County ever since.' He left a
will and names all the children except the 10th whom Hannah was carrying at the time the will
was written. The witnesses to Peter's will were Arthur Gladstone and Mary Shaw (she was his
mother, and second wife of his father, John, who later married John Shaw in 1791). Arthur
Gladstone was Peter's brother-in-law, having married,in 1786,to Susannah Hitt. He enlisted in

Date: Wednesday, July 28, 1999 You might be interested to learn also that a group of Hitt desc.
(variously connected) met earlier this month to install a US govt. tombstone marker for Peter
Hitt, at the small family graveyard where Peter Hitt raised his family. The new stone joins the
original one, placed by his family, with a still fine inscription on it, AND an SAR marker that
was placed a few years ago. We are working on clearing the entire graveyard (which had been
totally overgrown) and will fence it so it can be maintained. The present owner of the property
(no relation) has been very cooperative. Hannah (James) Hitt is also buried here but (so far as we
know) none of the children were. The Hitt log cabin is still standing tho not in reconstructable
condition. One sheltered side seems almost new, tho. The farm (no longer farmed) is located on
the north side of the Rappahanock River where it is crossed by Rt.645. Rte. 645 goes north from
just west of Amissville, Va. The graveyard is at the top of a hill on the right side of the road; an
overgrown lane goes off the road just after the bridge. If you are ever out this way, you might
want to visit. Myles Johnson

follows: Joseph Hitt was most likely the son of Joseph Jr., and he is identified in this family

sons of Joseph Hitt III.(Joseph,Jr. had a brother named Peter but he died before Joseph Jr.) James
and William are also believed to have been the sons of Joseph, Jr. Joel was a nephew of Joseph
Jr.;the son of his brother John. The John Sr., listed at the estate could have been Joseph, Jr.'s
brother or his son, as both were still living at the time. James, Jr. remains unidentified.

{#13}{#13}1. John HITT[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] was born on 8 Jan 1759 in Fauquier County,
Virginia.9 He died on 2 Nov 1839 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. He was buried in Cape
Girardeau County, Missouri. John Hitt Cemetery. John Hitt was a revolutionary soldier and on or
about 28 March 1833 he made application for a pension (Cape Girardeau County, Book D, page
332). John also served in the South Carolina Militia under Col. Anderson. On 14 June 1833 John
filed an indenture in favor of his son John, Jr. leaving him all his farm animals and personal
property (Cape Girardeau County, Book H, page 130). It is believed that John and Frances
moved to South Carolina about 1785 before the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth. The 1790
Census for South Carolina shows a John Hitt in the 96th District with 2 males over 16, 4 males
under 16 and five females. They moved to Washington County, Georgia, where John and his
son, William, entered the Georgia Land Lottery in 1805, but neither was awarded any land. To
be eligible for the lottery, they were required to have lived in Georgia for at least a year. John
was a Baptist and there are several notes in the Bethlehem Church minutes concerning John and
Franky in 1803 and 1804. (Bethlehem Church at Warthen, Washington County, Georgia).{#13}
Then, in about 1806, John and Franky sold their land in Georgia to John Banks, Franky's brother,
and moved on to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. (The Hitts traveled with a group to Missouri;
that group including: William and Charity Matthews, John and Nancy Sheppard, Thomas and
Jane English, and Catherine Anderson; See Bock Book) On 19 July 1806, John and Frances Hitt
joined with Rev. David Green, George Lawrence and Henry Codkerham, deacons, and with a
group of other Baptist residents to organize a Baptist church called 'Bethel.' (First permanent
Protestant Church to be established west of the Mississippi River) The church ceased to function
in about 1868. (History of Old Bethel Church, Mrs. Edgar Bock). Many of John and Frances'
children were also members of the Bethel Church. On 24 October 1906, the Missouri Baptist
General Association erected a monument at the Old Bethel Cemetery. The inscription on the
monument reads: 'Old Bethel Baptist Church, the first permanent non-Catholic church west of
the Mississippi River. Constituted July 19, 1906 with these members: Thomas English, Leaunde
Green, Jane English, Agnes Ballou, Thomas Bull, Edward Spears, Anderson Rodgers, John Hitt,
Clara Abernathy, Catherine Anderson, Rebecca Randol, Francis Hitt, William Mathews. The
Missouri Baptist General Association commemorated with a celebration and the erection of this
monument Oct. 24, 1906.' The Old Bethel Cemetery is located in Cape Girardeau County,
Missouri; 3 miles south, slightly east of Jackson, and a mile west of Hwy. 25, on the farm of
William A. Lowes. John appears in the 1829 Tax List for Cape Girardeau as the present claimant
on 225 acres of land (original Patentee, Daniel Doigin); and as present claimant on 200 acres of
land for which James Cox was the original claimant. {#13}Before John died he deeded his land
to his sons. On 5 October 1819, he deeded to his son John Hitt, Jr. 255 acres of land, 'in
consideration of the natural love and affection for my son John Hitt, Jr.'.(Cape Girardeau County,
Missouri, Land Records, Jackson, Missouri, Deed Book E, pp 113/14). On 17 August 1827, 'in
consideration of the natural affection I have to my beloved son Henry Hitt of Cape Girardeau
County, I give all the plantation I now live on containing two hundred and seventeen acres, to
revert and descend to him at my death'. (Deed Book G, p. 162). On 29 June 1819, John and
Frances Hitt deeded five acres to their son-in-law, James Cox, Jr., for the sum of twenty-five
cents. (Deed Book E, pp 59/60). On 14 June 1833, John conveyed all his personal property to his
son John Hitt, Jr. (Deed Book H, pp. 129-130). John evidently felt that a will was not required of
him since he had deeded all his land and personal property to his sons during his lifetime.
{#13}John and Frances are both buried in the John Hitt Cemetery at Cape Girardeau. {#13}John
Hitt's obituary can be found on page 53 in the Old Bethel Baptist Church minutes. Franky's
obituary can be found on page 65 of the minutes. On 9 November 1839 the following note
appears in the minutes of the Bethel Baptist Church near Jackson, Cape Girardeau County,
Missouri: Church conference opened by prayer and proceeded to business. Resolved that a
biographical sketch of the life of Bros. Jno. Hitt, deceased be placed in the Church Book. The
Bethel Church unanimously agreed in a resolution that a biographical sketch of the life and
conversation of their Decd. Bros. John Hitt be placed in the Church Book and a memorial of
departed worth. 'John Hitt from the best information we can obtain, has been a member of the
Baptist Church near 50 years all of which time we have reason to believe has never once
swerved from his profession, but has been a very orderly and an exemplary Christian, showing
the reality of his profession although confined to his home for a long time. Yet he was extremely
patient under all his affection. He departed this life Nov. 2, 1839. Firmly fixed in the faith he had
lived in. In the 80th year of his useful life.' {#13}{#13}Note: B. C. Holtzclaw (Germanna
Record No. 5) wrote that John, the son of Joseph Hitt, Jr., who married Frances Holtzclaw
moved to Cape Girardeau, lived, died and is buried there. This is incorrect. Holtzclaw listing of
John and Frances (Banks) Hitt's children is also incorrect, although all the Hitts were from the
Cape Girardeau, Missouri area. Holtzclaw cited mostly the grandchildren of John and Frances
(Banks) Hitt. John was married to Frances 'Franky' BANKS (daughter of Gerard BANKS Jr. and
Frances BRUCE) on 21 Jan 1782 in Halifax County, Virginia.[10] Frances 'Franky'
BANKS[6,11,8] was born on 8 Sep 1763 in Halifax County, Virginia. She died on 17 May 1852
in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. She was buried in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. The
1850 Census for Cape Girardeau County, Missouri lists Frances living with her daughter, Mary,
and her husband John Randol. She gave her age as 87 born in Virginia. Frances died at the home
of her daughter, Mary. On 13 November 1852 the following note was made in the Church Book
of the Bethel Baptist Church: 'Sister Frans Hitt departed this life the 17 day of May A.D. 1852,
she was born Sept. 8, 1763, and was baptized by Bro. Joseph Baker in 1804 in the state of
Georgia, Washington County, in Bethel Church, she move from Georgia to Missouri, Cape
Girardeau County and was received by letter into the Bethel Church A.D. 1806. Making in all an
orderly member of the regular Baptist Church forty eight years.' {#13}SOURCES Apply only to
