TAFE
GAP Year
Work
Who are you right now?
0 The Australian Bureau of statistics class Generation Y as a child born between 1983 – 2000
There are 4.2 million Gen Ys making up 20% of Australian population, and born between
1980-1994. Greater sophistication is needed when engaging with Generation Y. We are
dealing with the most formally educated generation ever. High school retention rates have
risen and almost half of Gen Ys have gone to University and many of the rest studied at
TAFE. So hype and superficiality don't persuade this educated generation.
Generation Y don't seek a job as much as they seek an opportunity. They have multiple
expectations of an organisation - it isn't just the job description but the workplace culture,
the variety, fun, training, management style, and flexibility that drives them. However, online psychometric testing of 300,000 respondents by Army Recruiting in the UK showed a
clear distinction between Gen Y types:
0 'Leaders' looking for the opportunity to inspire
0 'Thinkers' seeking a way to make an intellectual difference
0 'Mates' searching for belonging and adventure
0 'Escapers' who are after a new start, money and action.
Expectations
Generation Y
0 Gen Y workers have high expectations for themselves; they’re always aiming to work faster and better
than other workers. These expectations also extend to their employers; they look for managers who
are interested in their professional development.
Learning & Development
0 Ongoing learning and professional development is important to Gen Y – they’ll act as sponges, soaking
up information and knowledge from other employees in order to constantly improve, taking your
business on their journey.
Responsibility
0 Gen Y craves responsibility and involvement within the workplace and they are often berated for their
want to be ‘fast-tracked’ into management. However, this can work in your favour as they’ll naturally
become personally invested within the business, producing better results.
Work-Life Balance
Yes, yes, it’s that buzzword, again! But, with Gen Y putting great emphasis on a good work-life balance
you’ll find your office is a happier place and happy workers produce, you guessed it, better results!
Frequent Feedback
0 It will come as no surprise to most managers that Gen Y benefits greatly from regular feedback. You
only need to take a look at a Millennial child’s constant stream of blog posts, status updates, and texts
to know they are big fans of acknowledgement, as well as interaction
0 http://www.generationy.com/facts/
Here are the facts
0 The latest unemployment figures from the ABS show that in April there were 713,400 unemployed
people in Australia which was an unemployment rate of 5.8 per cent. The unemployment rate for young
people aged 15-24 years was more than twice as high at 12.9 per cent (266,000).
http://www.factsfightback.org.au/category/economy/
0 Generation Y makes up a rapidly increasing proportion of the world-wide workforce
0 It is estimated Gen Ys will have about 10 career or job changes in their lifetime
0 Of all work-age adults, it is those from Generation Y who are most averse to working long hours,
preferring a more flexible approach to the working day.
0 As a general trend of thought, most Generation Y adults are more interested in job fulfilment and
satisfaction than they are large salaries.
0 Generation Y is considered overall the most ambitious of all the generations.
0 There are a wide range of skill shortages currently in Victoria and Australia nationally
http://docs.employment.gov.au/node/31447
How many pathways will you
have?
Over the course of their lifetime, most members of Generation Y will
hold down more jobs than their parents or grandparents did. On
average, they only stay in one particular job for around two years before
seeking to move on to the next one. Some social critics say that this is
because, as children, they were taught that simply by participating in
activities, they were entitled to a reward. As such, the concept of
‘winning’ is almost lost on Generation Y, and they expect reward for
relatively little achievement.
So where are you now?
VCAL is a great start to getting you on the way to
your pathway
Here's a secret though..
Not a lot of people know what they want to do as a
career and its likely in your time you will have a
wide range of career pathways..
Building on your VET?
0 Did you know you can build on your VET at TAFE..
0 Studying at NMIT provides seamless pathways towards higher qualifications. NMIT’s
Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees are designed to get you on track to achieving your academic
and career goals.
What are
pre-apprenticeships?
A pre-apprenticeship is a pathway into an Australian Apprenticeship
that can kick-start your career in your chosen industry. They give you
the opportunity to experience a working environment, gain practical
experience and develop your skills. Completing a pre-apprenticeship
means you can see if you enjoy working in a particular industry, which
can help you to make career and training decisions.
A pre-apprenticeship combines on-campus or school study with
practical on-the-job training. You can study a pre-apprenticeship while
you are still at school. A pre-apprenticeship is usually shorter and at a
lower qualification level than an apprenticeship. They can give you
credit towards an Australian Apprenticeship, and gives you a
competitive advantage when looking for employers to take you on as an
apprentice.
What are Australian
Apprenticeships?
Australian Apprenticeships (often referred to as apprenticeships
and traineeships) are a great career option. They combine practical
work with structured training to give you a nationally recognised
qualification and the experience you need to get the job you want.
Training is flexible and can be on the job, off the job or a
combination of both. Australian Apprenticeships are available at a
variety of qualification levels in most occupations, including
traditional trades and a wide range of emerging industry sectors.
You don’t have to wait until you leave school to get started.
Australian School-based Apprenticeships are now offered by many
schools, giving students the option of starting their training while
still at school.
