We believe that business research should be applied to the business world, and that it must
communicate to managers in organizations. Emerald actively encourage applied research, case
description and qualitative discussion and analysis as well as quantitatively based papers.
We believe in the value of authors from a wide range of nationalities, cultures and contexts.
Although we only currently publish in the English language we encourage contributions from around
the world.
We believe in our authors. We offer what pragmatic, realistic and forward-looking attitudes on
copyright. We provide, in the Emerald Literati Network, what we think is a unique service.
"I like publishing with Emerald because
it allows for a diversity of views.
Such diversity is required, in my
opinion, for the continued progress
of society."

Emerald Backfiles
“The farther backward you can look, the
farther forward you are likely to see”
Winston Churchill
Why did we develop Emerald
Backfiles?
• Changes in reader behaviour – content is chiefly
accessed online rather than via hard copy journals
• Four of the five most cited papers in Emerald journals
were published before 1994 (when we first started to
capture content electronically)
• Digitizing the archive has brought this knowledge to
new readers and reopened historical scholarship.
How did we do it?
•
•
•
•
•
With great help from the British Library!
We worked with our author network to source articles
Over 68,000 articles were digitized, dating as far back as 1898
Each of the articles was transformed into fully searchable PDFs
All articles were up-loaded into our Emerald platform and made
searchable in the same way as Emerald Management eJournals
Features
Over 100 years of management research online …
• Coverage back to Volume 1 Issue 1 with some articles dating back
as far as 1898
• 123 journal titles complete the Emerald Digital Backfiles, providing
users with 68,000 articles on key management disciplines
• Each Backfile has been transformed into a fully searchable PDF
• Emerald Backfiles contains early articles from seminal publications
such as British Food Journal, European Journal of Marketing and
Journal of Documentation.
What is included in
