Salt Lake City, UT Round 4 Salt Lake City, UT Proposal for Local Sustainability Matching Fund Spring 2014 Project Title: Green City Growers Purpose of Project: Green City Growers establishes community gardens on City-owned and managed land to increase access to fresh local produce and reduce barriers to urban food production. Brief description of project goals, strategy, and key activities (250 words or less): Green City Growers is an initiative to establish and develop sustainable, flourishing community vegetable gardens on City-owned and managed land through a partnership between neighborhood garden organizers, Salt Lake City Division of Sustainability and the Environment, non-profit Wasatch Community Gardens, and Community Foundation of Utah. The long-term impacts are an increase in access to fresh, nutritious local produce particularly for low-income areas of the city and a demonstration of public-private partnership leveraged to reduce barriers to urban food production. The project implementation is guided by three objectives: 1) Start-Up Site Improvements and Upgrades for Community Gardens On City-Owned Lands: Establish start-up site improvements and upgrades to the Popperton Park and 1700 South 700 East Liberty Wells Community Gardens selected through the Green City Growers Program 2014. 2) Community Gardner Mentoring and Capacity Building: Mentor at least six -members of the Community Garden Councils (on-sight management teams) for Popperton Park and 1700 South 700 East Liberty Wells Community Gardens throughout the growing season. 3) Philanthropic Collaboration: Raise awareness in the local philanthropic community and develop smart philanthropy tools to aid social and for-profit entrepreneurs to take calculated risks, gain new networks, and drive innovation through local philanthropy that supports building a sustainable future for Utah. Over a twelve month project period, Green City Growers will result in: a) two new community gardens established for community members, who lack their own gardens and/or who have limited access to fresh whole foods; b) 0.6 acres of City-owned and managed land cultivated for local food production; c) acquisition of leadership skills and sustainable organic gardening skills by six community gardeners; and d) an impact statement and smart philanthropy tools that can be use to increase investments in Donor Advised Funds, special interest funds, and permanent endowments managed by the Community Foundation of Utah.
