Celebrating 30 years
Thousands of special moments
Ever since the Victorian Seniors Festival first burst onto the scene as ‘Seniors Week’ in 1982, countless
events from bushwalks and bands to concerts and scrabble tournaments have been enjoyed statewide.
If you are over 60 it’s time for you to celebrate, get down and boogie, discover something new, sit back and be
entertained, meander through natural beauty or use free public transport to catch up with friends – old or new.
This year, on top of more than 1,000 events statewide, we invite you to make the most of our special 30th year
offerings. Celebrate with good food and company, divine performances and delightful social events. It’s all there for
you. Why? It’s your time.
Celebrating good eating
It’s your time to have fun with food
Food is vital to life in so many ways. A source of nutrition, it is also a joyful part of celebrations, social
gatherings and cultural events and a great way to enjoy life at any age.
Food is a way to keep in touch with old friends and new, whether by cooking together, going out for meals together
or sharing special events together. That’s why Celebrating good eating is a key theme for this year’s Victorian
Seniors Festival.
As part of our 30th year celebrations, there are ample opportunities for you to step out and enjoy good food in your
community. You can attend cooking demonstrations, sample delicious food, have lunches using local produce or
even use the free public transport available for Seniors Card holders to visit your family, friends and grandkids and
share a meal. Whatever you do, there are hundreds (and thousands) of ways for you to celebrate.

Message from the Premier and the Minister for Ageing
Welcome to the Victorian Seniors Festival. This year we are celebrating 30 years! This is a great
achievement. The involvement of many thousands of seniors has seen the Festival become the
state’s major annual event for older Victorians.
The 2012 Festival program is full of information about free and low cost events and special offers. To help you get to
events and catch up with friends and family, the Victorian Coalition Government is again pleased to provide free
metropolitan and regional public transport for all Victorian Seniors Card holders for the period 7–14 October 2012,
including five days of free V/Line travel.
We are very happy to be supporting the Festival’s 30th year by ensuring that events take place right across Victoria.
You can get together with others in your community for celebrations and good times.
This year we are celebrating 30 years with special extra events:

Free Festival Hubs will operate in Ballarat and Bendigo. These will provide local and visiting seniors
with free entertainment, the opportunity to catch up with friends over a tea or coffee and to connect with
groups
and activities across their region.

Extra free music, theatre and Celebrating good eating events will occur in both regional and
metropolitan areas to celebrate the social and cultural heart of the Festival.
Again in 2012 all 79 Victorian councils are funded to ensure a statewide Festival. Councils are offering hundreds of
Festival events and activities, some of which are featured in this program. Make sure you use the council contacts
listed in this program and the Seniors Online Victoria website at www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au to find out about all
events in your area.
The Victorian Coalition Government works with and supports many organisations run by older Victorians. Some of
these, such as the Council on the Ageing and the University of the 3rd Age Network, have been involved with the
Festival from the very early days. They and many other community groups have events listed in this program that
we are confident will be of interest to you.
For Victorian Seniors Card holders there are lots of special offers available in this celebratory year. Check the
special offers section in this program or visit Seniors Online for more details.
We acknowledge the important contribution made to the Festival by our sponsors and community partners.
It is great to see such a strong show of support this year, particularly from our Premier Partners, the Australian
Seniors Insurance Agency, the City of Melbourne, Diabetes Australia – Victoria and State Trustees.
If you are coming into Melbourne on free public transport you will find there is a lot on offer for you. It is your
Festival! Take part in Opening Day at Federation Square, concerts at the Town Hall, and the free Melbourne
Festival Hub for entertainment, information and refreshments.
Thank you for your contributions to Victoria. We hope you enjoy the 30th year celebrations.

Elizabeth Chong – Celebrating good eating ambassador
Born in a small village in China’s southern province of Guangzhow, Elizabeth arrived in Australia at the
age of three. Elizabeth is a Lifetime Australia Day Ambassador, celebrity chef, award-winning author of
eight books and founder of the Elizabeth Chong Cooking School. Elizabeth has brought Chinese food
and culture into the hearts and homes of thousands of Australians.
Growing up with food
I grew up in a traditional Chinese home in suburban Melbourne where food was the central theme of any family
gathering. We understood the Chinese saying ‘the joy of living begins at the table’. This idea was reinforced every
single day as a celebration at the dinner table.
Healthy eating
All my life I’ve absorbed the Chinese philosophy that good eating and good living are inseparable. Like many traditional
Chinese, I believe that understanding the properties of ingredients and even method of cooking add to the Chinese idea
that ‘food is medicine’. My mother cured all of our illnesses, colds, even bad complexions, by preparing often delicious
and restorative medicine food.
Getting inspired
As we get older, and for some of us a little lonely, it is hard to be inspired about cooking. But as a single person and
OBE (over bloody eighty) myself, I want to take charge of my own wellbeing and prepare nourishing food for myself
as long as I am able. Inspiration is part of living. Some people age more quickly because they remove inspiration
from their priorities. Buying a cookbook and enjoying experimenting with an unfamiliar dish is a way of being active
in pursuit of inspiration. Picking a nutritious recipe can give you a good health boost too.
Enjoying food alone or with company
I often eat alone and am happy to do so as long as the food is good. When I am cooking for myself, I like being a
little extravagant. I might purchase a nice pork or beef fillet for stir-frying with some fresh greens. Being a ‘foodie’,
whenever I go out to eat, I make sure I try something new, alone or in the company of friends and at least once a
month. Whichever way, eating is a celebration and allows us to celebrate closeness through sharing of food. I urge
everyone to think beyond the notion of food for survival. Food is a joy you can either relish alone or in company.
Even when you are eating formally, when food is shared it creates immediate bonds, goodwill and friendship.
Feeling inspired? Contact your local council and join in your local Celebrating good eating event and ensure you
pick up your Celebrating good eating guide (see page 8) at this year’s Victorian Seniors Festival.
Other ways to celebrate
Get in the spirit of the Festival and:

Ask some friends over for a celebration lunch – prepared by you or all of you together.

Make a date to meet in town – wherever that might be – and catch up for lunch or a picnic by the river.

Invite your neighbour in for a cuppa and some afternoon tea, play your favourite music or just relax in the
garden.
Go to the shops and pick up something for a meal that you haven’t tried before – whether it’s a new herb or spice or even a
whole new dish!
Don’t forget that from Sunday 7 October to Sunday 14 October, Seniors Card holders are eligible for free public
transport (see page 14).
Get your Celebrating good eating guide
A special Celebrating good eating guide chock-full of suggestions for having fun with food is available at this year’s
Victorian Seniors Festival. It’s yours to keep.
Pick up your copy at Opening Day, any of the Festival Hubs, Celebrating good eating events or on the web
at www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au. You can also call Seniors Information Victoria on 1300 135 090 to request a copy
be sent to you.
6
Celebrating statewide
It’s your time to explore
Thousands of Victorian Seniors Festival events are taking place right across Victoria. Pop into your
Festival Hubs at Melbourne, Ballarat or Bendigo or join in the merriment at any of the events in this
program.
Closer to home, with more than 800 extra events on offer, get in touch with your local council for details about
happenings in your backyard.
With so many stimulating events taking place statewide, every Victorian council produces their own local program of
fun and good times!
