Anatomy and Physiology Mrs. Merriman Room 803 phone: 571-3613 2015/2016 Course Description: Welcome to A&P! This is a natural science course for Juniors and Seniors who have already passed Basic Biology. In this class we will cover the basics of human anatomy and physiology including anatomical terminology, basic biochemistry, cells and tissues, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic/immune, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. We will also discuss common human disease processes. This course should be of interest to those students planning careers in Medicine, Education, Athletics, and Science. Textbook: Body Structures and Functions 11th edition will checked out of library. Personal Background: I received a Bachelor of Science degree (Biology Major) from Central Washington University. I then completed a yearlong program for Clinical Laboratory Science which led to a B.A in Allied Health Science and certification as a Medical Technologist. After working in clinical laboratories for twelve years, mainly in microbiology, I went back to school to obtain my teaching certificate from the University of Washington, Tacoma. My teaching endorsements include Biology, General Science and Health Occupations. I have taught at Henry Foss High School for seven years and am very excited to join the Thunderbirds at Mount Tahoma for my 6th year! Supplies : three ring binder or other method to keep organized, standard paper, blue/black pen/pencil. These are to be brought to class DAILY. You cannot participate without supplies. Textbooks must be brought to class daily. Progress reports will be sent home according to the district schedule. If you wish to know how your grade stands in the interim please check your grade online (please do not ask the teacher). If you have a question about posted grades I will be happy to discuss it with you before or after class. This course is credited as a Science credit. A failing grade may require you to repeat a course in order to graduate. Daily Target Work: Attendance and punctuality are important social and job skills. Your presence and active participation are essential in this class Each day you write the learning target on a piece of paper within five minutes after the tardy bell rings. This will get you prepared to go and focused on transitioning to the days learning target. You may use the same paper to write your Targets and the paper will be collected when that Unit is tested. They will count as Participation points. Grading My goal as a teacher is to use a method which produces grades that have more meaning and clearly represent and encourage student learning. The grades are derived from summative assessments (test and quizzes) and also classwork/homework.. The assessments are directly related to learning goals/targets that are thoroughly discussed and understood by students. Formative Assessments are assignments that will be used to provide students with the opportunity to practice new concepts/materials. They will be factored into the grade, but at a smaller percentage than tests (20% of overall grade). These will include such things as class practice, daily assignments, some homework, participation and discussion. Unexcused Late work will receive a deduction of 25% for the first day late and 50% for the second day late. If a student never turns in an assignment it will count as a zero. Excused absences will be allowed an equal number of days to make up work. Summative Assessments (tests) will be given after opportunities to practice and learn have been provided. Quizzes, some labs and projects, and exams are all examples of summative assessments which will be used for grading(70% of overall grade). The summative assessment may be given in a new format if missed the first time it is given due to excused absence. Students will be expected to take the exam directly upon returning from an absence if the test date was known prior to absence and a chance to complete all formative assessments was given. If more time is needed due to an extended absence that shall be worked out with teacher and will have a limit of two weeks upon return to school. At that time the score will be recorded as missing and count as a zero. A = 94-100% A- = 90-93% B+ = 87-89% B = 84-86% C+ = 77-79% C = 74-76% D+ = 67-69% D- = 64-66% E = 59% and below B- = 80-83% C- = 70-73% D- = 60-63% Grade: 70% Summative Tests 20% Formative assignments 10% Participation Classroom Expectations: 10% of your overall grade will be based on my assessment of your ability to follow these expectations of proper participation 1. Enter class quietly, ON TIME, sit in assigned seat, get materials out and be prepared to answer DO NOW. 2. Be respectful of instructor or student speaking. All Policies of Mount Tahoma High School will be followed in this classroom. Offenses will result in 2 warnings, a phone call home, then office referral for detention or other discipline Anatomy and Physiology Curriculum for First Semester: I. . Unit One 1.
