Advisory Board Business – Mike Kiernan
 Approval of Spring 2010 Meeting Minutes: Mike Kiernan moved that the minutes from Spring
2010 be approved. Emmy Vareberg seconded the motion. The motion carried.
 Action Item Reports from Spring 2010 Meeting
· North Dakota/Minnesota Counselors Annual Meetings (Al Henderson):
· World Class Manufacturing (Mike Kiernan): Checked with national office and he will be
able to share that information with the advisory board.
· Advisory board members sharing information with students in classrooms: Dr.
Farahmand did not receive any input on this
· Curriculum Analysis (Dawn Allmaras): This will be discussed at the Spring 2011 AB
Meeting
· Curriculum Changes: Draft MfgE Proposal provided to AB members for review today;
to be discussed at Spring 2011 AB Meeting
· Potential Future Curricula: Looking for advisory board members who are willing to
teach new subjects/ideas in the classroom. Kambiz did not receive any input from AB
members.
· Invite Terry Kraft, Swanson Health, to Fall AB Meeting: Completed by Mike Kiernan
· Check on plaque for Capstone team presentations: Reza Maleki
· Alumni Reunion: We will not be doing a reunion this year. Kambiz welcomed
involvement from advisory board members in planning the event. Committee members
are John Cook, Elvin Isgrig, Al Henderson.
 Introduction and Confirmation of New Members: No input
 Bylaw Updates: Clint Rossland, Kambiz Farahmand, and Mike Kiernan met before the meeting
today and there are no updates to the bylaws. Emmy Vareberg asked if we are still requiring
members to attend at least one meeting every two years to remain active on the board; the answer
is yes—if you do not attend one meeting every two years you will be placed on the inactive list.


· Assisted with sourcing efforts to keep manufacturing in ND

State of the College – Dr. Gary Smith, Dean
 Departments’ operating funds were cut again by 10%
 Growth in programs (3% decrease this year) – approximately 2,900 students this year
 Honors Program – alternate way of learning engineering (would be resource-intensive); design projects
as freshmen, sophomores, or juniors
 First Year Program – Freshman year would be the same for all engineering disciplines
 Entrepreneurship program (minor or certificate)
 ABET Preparation
 $3M in capital projects submitted to SBHE; all of the projects were taken off the board’s list for
NDSU. Help encourage legislators to reinstate these funds.
 No new positions this year because of tight budgets. Good fiscal management in IME Department.
 John Hansmann asked “What is the University’s/College’s strategy in moving forward?” Gary Smith
answered: “As a college we are talking to state legislators, forming campus focus groups, performing
SWOT Analyses.”
 NDSU is focusing on collaboration efforts with UND (collaborators rather than competitors).
 There is nothing to worry about from an alumni perspective as far as funding.
 Meets & greets with companies; alliance with Sanford Health; joint bio-medical engineering degree
program with UND possibility in future.
 Renovation of ALA and Ehly; need to have analysis done as to how we can raise money for new
engineering building

State of the University – Dr. Craig Schnell, Provost
 President Bresciani’s State of the University Address
 Listening groups on campus
 Budget issues – College lost 10% of their operating budget
 Collaboration between two research universities is good (UND/NDSU)
 NDSU Strategic Plan
 Emmy Vareberg asked if all space projects have been taken off the books; the Provost said that the
SBHE removed all but $1M for repairs only.


 The next two recommendations are Matthew Vettel and Wendy Masloski (from Elvin’s original
list). Mike Kiernan asked the board if there were any comments on these individuals or any other
nominations. These two nominations were approved by a quorum of voting members of the
board. Chris Barta suggested we ask the recipients when they would like to receive the award (in
spring or fall). No other recipients were identified by the board at this time.


 Spring Advisory Board Meeting is planned for Friday, April 29, 2011
 This will be a “working meeting” – Curriculum Review and Assessment committee and
Laboratory Improvement Committee
 Laboratory Improvement Committee (the old Fundraising committee) is now a standing
committee
 President Bresciani to be invited by Mike Kiernan

 John Hansmann suggested we have another student presentation and interaction with advisory
board members (possibly fundraising issues, etc.). Could be a group of graduating seniors, student
organizations, Coop participants, etc. To be discussed in more detail through emails.


