SYMMETRY - A WELL BALANCED ARRANGEMENT OF PARTS. In this webquest you will learn about different kinds of symmetry. Not only will you see the applications in geometric figures, but you will learn to recognize symmetry in nature. You will apply what you have learned about symmetry to create geometric designs. You will gain a better understanding of how symmetry is all around us and become more aware of symmetry in our world. Task Your task is to discover all that you can about symmetry from the resources below. Use the Polygon worksheet and alphabet symmetry in your hand out, and then identify lines of symmetry. You will then take a simple square of white paper and create a symmetrical snowflake. Follow directions to create a symmetrical quilt design. After completing these activities, you should have a good understanding of symmetry, and be keenly aware of symmetry around us. Task 1 Identify Symmetry in Regular Polygons Page 1 of your hand out- Use a ruler to draw the lines of symmetry on the polygons THEN: Click here to check your answers http://www.adrianbruce.com/Symmetry/9.htm Task 2 Identify Symmetry in the Alphabet Page 2 of your hand out. Mark each letter showing the lines of symmetry. Sort the letters into the correct box below THEN: Click here to check your answers http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/~demo5337/s97a/letters.htm Task 3 Open a new Office Word Document. Type your name across the page in capital letters in 4 different fonts. Print out your document and draw the lines of symmetry for each letter. Task 4 Symmetry in snowflakes: www.snowflakebentley.com/snowflakes.htm to look at real snow flakes and the symmetry they have Directions for creating your snowflake http://www.highhopes.com/snowflakes.html TASK 5 Most quilt designs use symmetry in their construction.
