However, considering these facts, the present government of Bangladesh has freshly formulated “National Science and Technology Policy (NSTP) – 2011” where adequate emphasis has been given on intellectual property and related issues. Science & Technology: Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) is functioning under the Ministry of Science and Technology as the apex organization for performing scientific and industrial research. BCSIR is mandated to execute research and development (R&D) programmes to expedite the socio-economic development of the country providing services to the society, industries, entrepreneurs and SMEs (small and medium enterprises). Since Bangladesh is a party to WTO and its provisions are mandatory for Bangladesh, IP issue has received proper attention while formulating NSTP. How IPR is regulated in Bangladesh? The Government of Bangladesh has taken necessary initiatives to promote and update the IP laws to make it compliant with Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). Accordingly, the Government amalgamated the Patent Office and the Trademarks Registry Office in 1989 and established the “Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT)” which is the apex organization of the country administering the IP issues under the Ministry of Industries (MOI).
