The habit of reading is one of the greatest resources of mankind; and we
enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are
borrowed. A borrowed book is like a guest in the house; it must be
treated with punctiliousness, with a certain considerate formality. You
must see that it sustains no damage; it must not suffer while under your
roof. You cannot leave it carelessly, you cannot mark it, you cannot turn
down the pages, you cannot use it familiarly. And then, some day,
although this is seldom done, you really ought to return it.
But your own books belong to you; you treat them with that affectionate
intimacy that annihilates formality. Books are for use, not for show; you
should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on
the table, wide open and face down.
--- William Lyon Phelps 1933

My father owned a barbershop. Every holiday, all of the guys who I
thought were just losers who hung out at the shop, and were always
bumming haircuts and borrowing money from my dad, all those guys
always ended up at our dinner table. And I would often say to my father
afterwards, ‘Dad, why can’t we just have regular people at our Christmas
dinner?’ And my father said to me, ‘They are regular people. They’re just
like you. They want the same thing you want.’ And I would say, ‘What?’
And he’d say, ‘To be fed.’ And at the time I just thought he was talking
about dinner. But I have since learned how profound he really was, because
we all are just regular people seeking the same thing - we all just want to
know that we matter. We want validation. We want the same things.
--- Oprah Winfrey
In the speech above, who does Oprah compare the guys who used
to come to her house for a free dinner to?
• businessmen and bankers trying to line their pockets
• criminals and vagrants who want to take advantage of goodhearted people
• uneducated worthless people who do not deserve to be heard
• regular people just like everyone else in the world

Here at Southmont Middle School, we are not taking steps to make a better
future. Are you ready to join us in these steps? You can, if you join the
Green Team to make an impact on the use of paper here
The amount of paper we use at Southmont is astounding. If you look in the
trash cans around here, they are filled with paper
We have to learn the three R’s of paper use. They are to reduce, reuse, and
recycle. First, we need to reduce how much paper we use as a class. Our
next R is to try to reuse paper. Always use the back of a sheet of paper. The
third R to remember is recycle. We need to use the small blue containers for
recycling.
So, I’ll finish by saying that no one can do this job alone. We need
everyone’s help. I’d like you to consider joining the Green Team.
The organizational pattern of this speech is _________________
• cause and effect
• problem and solution
• comparison and contrast
• chronological
