LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW This lesson will be a concluding in depth look at over nutrition and obesity using the information and explanations provided to the students from the first four days of the unit week. Students will continue to understand how these topics affect them as well as information on how to live healthier. Students will also find solutions on how to be healthier in their own lives. Together as a class students will create a chart on why concentrating and studying about the topic of obesity and over nutrition can help improve our society’s standards of living. Using the information from the discussion and from previous class periods, they will make a form of conclusion by creating a piece of writing discussing any of the following: how this topic impacts their lives, what they have learned about over nutrition and obesity, or ways our society can change. All students will also have to include some form of solution in their writing about the topic they choose in their writing. OBJECTIVES Students will be able to present the knowledge learned from the past week on over nutrition and obesity. They will do this by participating in an in class discussion about the importance of learning about the topic as well as creating an essay or letter on the topic of over nutrition and obesity. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION Students will create a piece of writing with appropriate punctuation, grammar, and spelling displaying their knowledge of the over nutrition, obesity, and means to live healthier. These pieces of writing also must be in the correct format, depending on what type of writing they choose. The piece of writing will be worth 20 points and participation for the in class discussion will be worth 5 points. PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE Students will need to have an understanding on over nutrition, obesity and healthy lifestyles. They will need to know keys facts and information from previous lessons taught on the same subject area. Students will need to have the ability to create a piece of writing, a letter or essay, in their correct format. MATERIALS List of required materials: Piece of lined paper Pencil/Pen Notes students may have taken on the topic VOCABULARY/KEY WORDS Over Nutrition: Over Nutrition is defined as overconsumption of nutrients and food to the point at which health is adversely affected. Obesity: Obesity means having too much body fat. Obesity occurs over time when you eat more calories than you use. 5 Paragraph Essay: The five-paragraph essay is a format of essay having five paragraphs: one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with support and development, and one concluding paragraph. Friendly Letter: a written letter addressed to a friend or family member. This includes a closing and signature. TEACHING PROCEDURES Procedural Steps (Step by step instructions for teaching the lesson): Step 1: Have a brief discussion (about 5-10 minutes) with students with what they have learned from the week on the subject matter. This discussion should include previous knowledge and ideas for possible solutions. Step 2: Tell students that the end to this unit is creating a writing piece in which they will discuss over nutrition, obesity, and ways and solutions for creating a healthy lifestyle. Step 3: Tell for this writing they will need to have one to three facts and information on the subjects incorporated into their writing pieces. These facts should come from notes or worksheets completed during the first four days of the unit. Step 4: Tell students that they will need to brainstorm and come up with some ways that they can apply being healthy into their everyday lives. Examples include, exercising, eating fresh produce, getting enough fruits and vegetables, and cutting back on sugars and fast foods if possible. Step 5: Tell students that the options for the writing piece will be one of the two options: Write a letter to a family member, friend, or their future selves discussing what they have learned about over nutrition and obesity. They will discuss the effects they have on individuals and on society. They will then provide different ways in which they think they could start implementing a healthier lifestyle in their lives, and also ask the person that letter is addressed to, to also start implanting a healthy lifestyle. Write a five-paragraph essay explaining what over nutrition and obesity are. They will discuss the ways that they impact individual people and also society. They will then discuss one to two ways that people could start implementing being healthy into their lives. Step 6: Have students first create an outline on what their writing piece is going to be. This outline should include the different facts they are going to include, if writing an essay what each paragraph is going to be on, and if creating a letter whom they would write the letter to and what information they would include. This outline should include the basic idea of what their writing is going to be on as well as the facts and different information that they are going to include. You should give students about 5-10 minutes on this. Step 7: Using their outlines have students start creating their writing pieces. Step 8: There should be a short (5 minutes) discussion on what solutions students used in their writing after finishing their writing pieces. Step 9: Once students have completed their writing pieces they will turn them into to teacher to be graded. RESOURCES Glossary. (n.d.). glossary [Liberty Hall Writers Wiki]. Strategic thinking is applied by having the students come up with ways in which they will start being healthier in their lives. They will both discuss this as a class, sharing what they think are possible solutions, as well as creating solutions on their own. Systems’ thinking is included by the students discussing how over-nutrition and obesity not only impact individuals, but also society as a whole. They will discuss all the different functions that it affects. Futures thinking may also be included because students will discuss how this might continue to impact society as whole in the future.
