What is a prophet? 1. We may be prone to thinking of prophets as men who performed great deeds – miracles even – through the power of God. (Mark 9:2-8) 2. We may also be prone to thinking they are those who foresaw or predicted future events. 3. Although these do describe some of the prophets, the primary function of the prophet was to be the messenger for God. What is a prophet? 1. Consider the description given regarding Aaron and Moses. (Exodus 4:16, 7:1) 2. God’s description of the duties of a prophet and those that hear them is found in Deuteronomy 18:15-22. 3. Other designations include seer, man of God, servant of God, messenger of Jehovah and Watchman. 4. Jeremiah 20:9 – “If I say, ‘I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,’ there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.” There were prophets in all the ages. He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the Lord, the God of Israel. All the officers of the priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations. And they polluted the house of the Lord that he had made holy in Jerusalem. The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, until there was no remedy.” Although they taught against injustices, immorality and other issues, the primary message of the prophets was to condemn the practice of idolatry that was so prevalent among the Israelites. Why should we study the Minor Prophets? 1. It will strengthen our faith because we see God’s plan developed and fulfilled. 2. It will strengthen our faith because we see God’s longsuffering. 3. It will strengthen our faith because we see God’s diligence to His promises. 4. It will give us strength to stand strong for the Lord in the face of religious, political, social, and moral corruptions. 5. It should give us courage to put God first…i.e., avoid idolatry!
