Willow Class Summer Term Year 2 Poplar Class 17th April 2015 Dear parents and carers, We hope you had a nice Easter break. Well done to the parents who have been supporting their children with their reading by filling in their reading journals regularly. Please do encourage your child to keep daily record of their reading. Remember that the school day starts at 8.45am – your child will be recorded as being late if they arrive after this time. Our Topics this Half term: Topic: This half term, children across the school will be learning about a habitat. In Year 2, we will be learning about Rainforests. Pupils will learn about the different layers in the rainforest and the animals and plants that inhabit these layers. The topic links up with our science work on habitats and other subjects across the curriculum. Literacy The focus this half term is story writing, punctuation and grammar. Lots of our writing work will be linked up to the rainforest topic. Pupils will learn how to write a non-chronological report. This will involve organising their writing into subheadings and including some technical vocabulary. Maths We will be securing place value to ensure what is represented by each digit in a three-digit number. For example, children will need to be secure in understanding that 346 is 300 + 40 + 6. We will also be revisiting partitioning and time, and solving word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. To further support your child in maths you can visit http://resources.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/maths/ Science In Science this half term we will learning about habitats. Our work on rainforests will link up with our science work. Pupils will learn about plants and animals in their local area. They will learn why animals live in particular habitats and how animals adapt to their environment. Homework Reading Pupils are expected to bring a book bag to school. The children are able to take books home each day. The school has purchased brand new books which children are expected to look after properly at home. Please support us by keeping the books in a good condition. Your child will be given 2 or 3 home school readers per week. The home school readers’ books will be changed weekly. These books are leveled according to your child’s reading ability and you should support you child by asking them to retell the story and answer questions. We expect your child to read at home every day for at least 20 minutes, 10 minutes of which must be out loud to an adult or other appropriate person. Daily reading at home has been shown to boost children’s performance and we do appreciate you finding the \ time to do this. Please encourage your child to read with expression and fluency. You can make comment on your child’s reading progress in their yellow reading journal, and talk to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns about their reading. If your child finishes the book before we change it remember you can read it again looking at the pictures, talking about the characters and discuss what parts you like or don’t like. You can also discuss meaning and practice spelling of words. You may also want to visit www.oxfordowl.co.uk to support your child with their reading. Art Kaylene will be teaching art based on topics that the pupils are learning about in class.
