Literary Response with Citation State of Arizona, Common Core Standards for grades 11 and 12 Informational text and Reading Standards in Literature Common Core Standards: • Informational text: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. (11-12.RI.1) • Literature: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. (11-12.RL.1) So…….. • This applies when you respond to a simple question with a one sentence answer. • This also applies when you are trying to write an essay in response to a statement. • So vague answers aren’t answers – “They wanted to make an example of her.” “The magistrates laid their heads together in vain.” “He didn’t believe she should have the right to speak.” “John Wilson and Governor Bellingham were upset with her and what happened.” “The magistrates are jealous of the way Hester dresses.” Informational text • For example – start with a statement such as “Mrs. Chumbley really likes salt.” • How am I going to support this statement? How am I going to write a 5 paragraph essay in support of this statement? • I have to go to sources, nutritional labels, and find evidence, then I have to quote that evidence in my essay. Introductory paragraph • Mrs. Chumbley really likes salt. She craves salt and seeks out food that can provide her with this mineral. Even though she knows salt is not always good for you, she wants it. She might try to justify it by saying she lives in the desert and needs salt to help retain water. She might say salt is in so much of the food we eat, it’s hard to avoid it. 1st paragraph with supporting evidence • Peanut butter is in her diet. Breakfast is peanut butter and toast; lunch is peanut butter and celery. Peanut butter has “65mg of sodium, 3% of daily amount needs”. That’s in 2 tablespoons; how much do you think she consumes? 2nd supporting piece of textual evidence You wouldn’t think of ice cream as having lots of salt but it does. In a half cup serving there is”125mg of salt, that’s 5% of your total value”. Mrs. Chumbley probably eats more than half a cup, so in her bowl of ice cream, there might be at least 15% of her daily amount of salt. A silly essay but you can see how you need to find textual evidence to support the statement. The Scarlet Letter essay Write an essay, 5 paragraphs, in the format of “Literary Response with Citations”. Respond to this thesis statement “Hester Prynne acknowledges her sin in many ways in The Scarlet Letter. So what this means is you have to find at least 3 different quotes from the book that offer examples of Hester recognizing her sin or acting as a result of her sin, or her sin of adultery influences her way of life or what she does. You should have an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph as well as the 3 paragraphs in the body of the essay that offer examples of Hester behavior or thoughts as they relate to her sin. So .. as an example… Hester makes no attempt to deny her guilt. In a conversation, the Reverend Mr. Wilson offers her the opportunity to take the scarlet letter off if she will just say who the father is. She says, “It is too deeply branded. Ye cannot take it off. And would that I might endure his agony as well as mine!” She doesn’t say I didn’t do anything wrong; she knows it was wrong but accepts the punishment. A
