Hopkins Summer Emerging Issues in Biotechnology in Australia 31st May – 29th June Schedule: Thursday 31st May: Depart USA Saturday 2nd June: Arrive Sydney, Australia, orientation Sunday 3rd June: Day trip to the Blue Mountains Monday 4th – Wednesday 27th June: Class each morning with Dr. Selbie. 1-2 afternoon business visits to life sciences companies each week around Sydney Thursday 28th June: Final exam Friday 29th June: Depart Sydney for the USA or take part in the optional 4 day trip to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest in Cairns. Sunday 3rd June: Blue Mountains Visit the Sydney Olympic Park, home of the 2000 Olympics before heading to a local wildlife park to pet the koalas and feed the kangaroos their breakfast. After a lunch stop at a traditional Aussie mountain village we stop at the famous Echo Point lookout to see the Three Sisters and hear the local indigenous legends. Next we follow the Giant Staircase down into the only temperate rainforest in the southern hemisphere and follow a trail ending at the world’s steepest railway! The Blue Mountains National Park is also home to the oldest trees on the planet, The Wollemi Pines – but they’re in a top secret location… Company visits: Learn about biotechnology both in and outside of the classroom in Sydney, the oldest and most cosmopolitan city in Australia! This course will provide a global view of the study and applications of biology, biotechnology, medicine, medical devices and commercialization of basic research findings. Students will receive 3 credits.
